يقال: ما زال ذلك دينك ودأبك، وديدنك وديدبونك، كله من العادة.
It is said: That has remained your religion and your habit, and your custom and your habit, all of it is from habit.
دأب فلان في عمله أي جد وتعب، يدأب دأبا ودأبا ودؤوبا، فهو دئب؛
So-and-so was diligent and tired in his work, he strives with diligence and effort, so he is diligent;
وراحت كما راح أبو رئال، ... قاهي الفؤاد، دئب الإجفال
And she went as Abu Ri'al went, ... faint of heart, diligent in causing flight
فهو دائب؛ وأنشد هذا الرجز: دائب الإجفال.
So he is diligent; and this verse was recited: diligent in causing flight.
وأدأب غيره، وكل ما أدمته فقد أدأبته.
And he made others diligent, and whatever you make continuous, you have made it continuous.
وأدأبه: أحوجه إلى الدؤوب، عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وأنشد:
And he made him needy: he made him in need of continuous effort, from Ibn al-A'rabi; and he recited:
إذا توافوا أدبوا أخاهم
When they gathered, they made their brother needy (or diligent).
والدؤوب: المبالغة في السير، وأدأب الرجل الدابة إدآبا إذا أتعبها، والفعل اللازم دأبت الناقة تدأب دؤوبا، ورجل دؤوب على الشيء.
And al-Du'ub: is the exaggeration in pace, and the man made the mount exert itself, i.e., tired it out, and the intransitive verb is 'the she-camel exerted herself', and a man is persistent in a thing.
إنه يشكو إلي أنك تجيعه وتدئبه أي تكده وتتعبه؛
He complains to me that you make him hungry and you make him exert himself, meaning you toil and tire him;
يلحن من ذي دأب شرواط
He sings with a strong pace/drive.
فسره فقال: الدأب: السوق الشديد والطرد، وهو من الأول.
He explained it and said: Al-Da'b: is strong driving and chasing, and it is from the first meaning.
والدأب والدأب، بالتحريك: العادة والشأن.
And al-Da'b and al-Da'b, with vowelization: habit and state.
أصله من دأبت إلا أن العرب حولت معناه إلى الشأن.
Its origin is from 'I was diligent', but the Arabs changed its meaning to 'state'.
فإنه دأب الصالحين قبلكم.
For it is the habit of the righteous before you.
فكان دأبي ودأبهم.
So it was my habit and their habit.
مثل دأب قوم نوح ؛ أي مثل عادة قوم نوح، وجاء في التفسير: مثل حال قوم نوح.
Like the custom of the people of Noah; meaning like the habit of the people of Noah, and it came in interpretation: like the state of the people of Noah.
كَـدَأْبِ آلِ فِرْعَوْنَ ؛ أي كشأن آل فرعون، وكأمر آل فرعون؛
Like the custom of the people of Pharaoh; meaning like the state of the people of Pharaoh, and like the affair of the people of Pharaoh;
أن دأب هاهنا اجتهادهم في كفرهم، وتظاهرهم على النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، كتظاهر آل فرعون على موسى، عليه السلام.
That da'b here means their striving in their disbelief, and their conspiring against the Prophet, peace be upon him, like the conspiring of the people of Pharaoh against Moses, peace be upon him.
يقال دأبت أدأب دأبا ودأبا ودؤوبا إذا اجتهدت في الشيء.
It is said: I strove, I strive, with diligence and effort, if you strive in a thing.
والدائبان: الليل والنهار.
And the two continuous ones: the night and the day.
بني دوأب إني وجدت فوارسي ... أزمة غارات الصباح الدوالق
O Banu Du'ab, indeed I found my horsemen... the reins of the morning raids that sweep.
