As for al-khāḍib of ostriches, it may be that the tips of its feathers are dyed, and it may be that its legs turn red in spring, without any dyeing, and it is an incidental occurrence that befalls ostriches, so their legs turn red;
إذا كان الربيع، فأكل الأساريع، احمرت رجلاه ومنقاره احمرار العصفر.
When it is spring, and it eats the young shoots, its legs and beak turn red like saffron.
أحسبه أبا خيرة: إذا كان الربيع، فأكل الأساريع، احمرت رجلاه ومنقاره احمرار العصفر.

And it has been narrated from Abu al-Daqīsh al-Arabi that he said: al-khāḍib of ostriches, when it is aroused in spring, its legs turn green, specific to the male.
والظليم إذا اغتلم، احمرت عنقه، وصدره، وفخذاه، الجلد لا الريش، حمرة شديدة، ولا يعرض ذلك للأنثى؛ ولا يقال ذلك إلا للظليم، دون النعامة.
And the male ostrich, when aroused, its neck, chest, and thighs become intensely red, the skin not the feathers, and this does not happen to the female; and this is only said of the male ostrich, not the female ostrich.
وصف له علم يعرف به، فإذا قالوا خاضب، علم أنه إياه يريدون؛
It is a descriptive sign by which it is known, so when they say khāḍib, it is known that they mean it;
أذاك أم خاضب، بالسي، مرتعه، ... أبو ثلاثين أمسى، وهو منقلب؟
Is it that, or al-khāḍib, in the pasture, its grazing place, ... thirty years old, it has become an overturned one?
ويقال للثور الوحشي: خاضب إذا اختضب بالحناء «3»، وإذا كان بغير الحناء قيل: صبغ شعره، ولا يقال: خضبه.
And the wild bull is called khāḍib if it dyes itself with henna, and if it is without henna, it is said: it dyed its hair, and it is not said: it dyed it (khadabahu).

والمخضب، بالكسر: شبه الإجانة، يغسل فيها الثياب.
And al-mikhḍab, with kasra: like a basin, in which clothes are washed.
ومننه الحديث: أنه قال في مرضه الذي مات فيه: أجلسوني في مخضب، فاغسلوني.
And from it is the hadith: that he said in his illness in which he died: Seat me in a tub, and wash me.
