So she directed him to Al-Muṭṭalib ibn Abd Allah ibn Ḥanṭab al-Makhzumi
وكانت أمه بنت الحكم بن أبي العاص، وكان مروان بن الحكم خاله
And his mother was the daughter of Al-Ḥakam ibn Abi al-ʿĀṣ, and Marwān ibn Al-Ḥakam was his maternal uncle
فبعث به مروان على صدقات طيئ
So Marwān sent him to collect the alms of Ṭayyiʾ
فأكرمه وأعطاه عشرين أو ثلاثين بكر.
He welcomed him, honored him, and gave him twenty or thirty young she-camels.
ادعى حقا على رجل، فدعاه إلى ابن حنطب، قاضي المدينة
He claimed a right against a man, and summoned him to Ibn Ḥanṭab, the judge of Medina
فقال: من يشهد بما تقول؟
He said: Who will testify to what you say?
فقال: نقطة.
He said: Nuqṭah.
ما شهادته له إلا كشهادته عليه.
His testimony for him is no more than his testimony against him.
فداؤك أبي وأمي؛ والله لقد أحسن الشاعر حيث يقول:
May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; By God, the poet has spoken well where he says:
من الحنطبيين، الذين وجوههم ... دنانير، مما شيف في أرض قيصرا
From the Ḥanṭabiyyīn, whose faces are like... dinars, from what was sown in Caesar's land
كيس ورب السماء، وما أحسبه شهد إلا بالحق، فأجز شهادته.
By the purse and the Lord of Heaven, I do not think he testified except truthfully, so accept his testimony.
وقد يقال بالطاء المهملة، وسنذكره.
And it may be said with the unpointed ṭāʾ, and we will mention it.
