It is said: The she-camel and the ewe were milked with 'ḥalaban', with the 'lam' open; and what is meant by milking it at the water is so that people may benefit from its milk.

وفي الحديث أنه قال لقوم: لا تسقوني حلب امرأة ؛ وذلك أن حلب النساء عيب عند العرب يعيرون به، فلذلك تنزه عنه؛

And in the hadith, he said to a people: 'Do not give me the milk of a woman to drink'; this is because milking women was a defect among the Arabs for which they were taunted, so he abstained from it;

وفي حديث أبي ذر: هل يوافقكم عدوكم حلب شاة نثور؟ أي وقت حلب شاة، فحذف المضاف.

And in the hadith of Abu Dharr: 'Will your enemy meet you at the time of milking a restless ewe?' meaning the time of milking a ewe, with the possessor of the time omitted.

وفي المثل: شتى حتى تؤوب «1» الحلبة، ولا تقل الحلمة، لأنهم إذا اجتمعوا لحلب النوق، اشتغل كل واحد منهم بحلب ناقته أو حلائبه، ثم يؤوب الأول فالأول منهم؛

And in the proverb: 'Scattered until the group of milkers returns', and do not say 'al-ḥulmah', because when they gathered to milk the she-camels, each one occupied himself with milking his she-camel or his milch camels, then the first of them would return.

أصله أنهم كانوا يوردون إبلهم الشريعة والحوض جميعا، فإذا صدروا تفرقوا إلى منازلهم، فحلب كل واحد منهم في أهله على حياله؛

Its origin is that they used to bring their camels to the watering place and the basin together, and when they returned, they dispersed to their homes, and each one milked among his family separately;

حلبت حلبا مثل طلبت طلبا وهربت هربا.

I milked with 'ḥalaban' like I sought with 'ṭalaban' and I fled with 'haraban'.

يبيت الندى، يا أم عمرو، ضجيعه، ... إذا لم يكن، في المنقيات، حلوب

He spends the night with dew as his companion, O Umm Amr, ... if there is no milch animal among the fat ones.

إذا ما تراءاه الرجال تحفظوا، ... فلم تنطق العوراء، وهو قريب

When men saw him, they were cautious, ... and the foolish one did not speak, and he was near.

وكذلك الحلوبة وإنما جاء بالهاء لأنك تريد الشيء الذي يحلب أي الشيء الذي اتخذوه ليحلبوه، وليس لتكثير الفعل؛

And likewise 'al-ḥalūbah', and the 'ha' came because you mean the thing that is milked, i.e., the thing they prepared to milk, not for the multiplication of the verb;

والهاء أكثر، لأنها بمعنى مفعولة.

And the 'ha' is more common, because it is in the sense of the passive participle.

ألا قولا لعبد الجهل: إن ... الصحيحة لا تحالبها التلوث

Say to 'Abd al-Jahl: Indeed ... the healthy one does not endure the contamination of milking.

إياك والحلوب أي ذات اللبن.

Beware of the milch animal, i.e., the one with milk.

ومن حديث أم معبد: ولا حلوبة في البيت أي شاة تحلب، ورجل حلوب حالب؛

And from the hadith of Umm Ma'bad: 'And no milch animal in the house', meaning a ewe that is milked, and a man who is a milker;

قال اللحياني: هذه غنم حلب، بسكون اللام، للضأن والمعز.

Al-Lihyani said: This is 'ghanm ḥalb', with a sukun on the 'lam', for sheep and goats.

وبنو فزارة إنها ... لا تلبث الحلب الحلائب

And the Banu Fazara, indeed ... they do not delay the milking of the milch animals.

قال: حكي عن الأصمعي أنه قال: لا تلبث الحلائب حلب ناقة، حتى تهزمهم.

He said: It was narrated from Al-Asma'i that he said: The milch animals do not delay milking a she-camel until they defeat them.

قال: وهذا زعم أثبت.

He said: And this is a more established claim.

صاح هل ريت، أو سمعت براع ... رد في الضرع ما قرا في الحلاب؟

He cried out, 'Have you seen, or heard of a shepherd ... returning to the udder what he put in the milking pail?'

وفي الحديث: فإن رضي حلابها أمسكها.

And in the hadith: 'If he is pleased with its milk, he keeps it.'

كان إذا اغتسل دعا بشيء مثل الحلاب، فأخذ بكفه، فبدأ بشق رأسه الأيمن، ثم الأيسر ؛

When he performed ghusl, he would ask for something like the milking pail, and take it in his palm, and begin with the right side of his head, then the left;

فصحف؛ يعنون أنه كان يغتسل من ذلك الحلاب أي يضع فيه الماء الذي يغتسل منه.

So it was a scribal error; they mean that he would perform ghusl from that milking pail, i.e., he would put the water for ghusl in it.

والحلب، بالتحريك: اللبن المحلوب، سمي بالمصدر، ونحوه كثير.

And 'al-ḥalb', with harakah: the milked milk, named after the masdar, and similar examples are many.

والحليب: كالحلب، وقيل: الحلب: المحلوب من اللبن، والحليب ما لم يتغير طعمه؛

And 'al-ḥalīb: is like 'al-ḥalb; it is said: 'al-ḥalb is the milk that has been milked, and 'al-ḥalīb is that whose taste has not changed;

كان ربيب حلب وقارص

He was the foster child of milk and sourness.

شربت لبنا حليبا وحلبا؛

I drank milk that was fresh and milked.

لها حليب كأن المسك خالطه، ... يغشى الندامى عليه الجود والرهق

فما زاد على السقاء فهو إحلابة الحي.

And whatever exceeds the waterskin is the 'iḥlābah' of the household.

تقول منه: أحلبت أهلي.

You say from it: I 'aḥlabtu' my family (sent them milk).

يقال: قد جاء بإحلابين وثلاثة أحاليب، وإذا كانوا في الشاء والبقر، ففعلوا ما وصفت، قالوا جاؤوا بإمخاضين وثلاثة أماخيض.

It is said: He came with two 'iḥlāb' and three 'aḥālīb', and if they were with sheep and cows, and they did as described, they said they came with two 'imkhāḍ' and three 'amākhīḍ'.

ناقة حلباة ركباة أي ذات لبن تحلب وتركب، وهي أيضا الحلبانة والركبانة.

A she-camel that is 'ḥalaba' and 'rakabah', meaning she has milk to be milked and is suitable for riding, and she is also 'al-ḥalbānah' and 'ar-rakbānah'.

حلبانة، ركبانة، صفوف، تخلط بين وبر وصوف

Giving much milk, suitable for riding, abundant, mixing between camel hair and wool.

أبغني ناقة حلبانة ركبانة أي غزيرة تحلب، وذلولا تركب، فهي صالحة للأمرين؛

Find me a she-camel that is 'ḥalbānah' and 'rakbānah', meaning abundant to be milked, and docile to be ridden, so she is suitable for both purposes;

ناقة حلبات، بلفظ الجمع، وكذلك حكى: ناقة ركبات وشاة تحلبة «1» وتحلبة وتحلبة إذا خرج من ضرعها شيء قبل أن ينزى عليها، وكذلك الناقة التي تحلب قبل أن تحمل، عن السيرافي.

A she-camel 'ḥalabaat', in the form of the plural, and similarly narrated: a she-camel 'rakabaat', and a ewe 'taḥlabah' or 'taḥlabah' or 'taḥlabah' if something comes out of its udder before it is mounted, and likewise a she-camel that is milked before it conceives, according to Al-Sirafi.

مو fact: موالي حلف، لا موالي قرابة، ... ولكن قطينا يحلبون الأتاويا

Allies by oath, not by kinship, ... but a people who milk the offerings.

الرهن محلوب أي لمرتهنه أن يأكل لبنه، بقدر نظره عليه، وقيامه بأمره وعلفه.

The pledge is milkable, meaning its pledgee may consume its milk, according to his consideration of it, and his care for it and its fodder.

أأحلبت أم أجلبت؟ فمعنى أأحلبت: أنتجت نوقك إناثا؟ ومعنى أم أجلبت: أم نتجت ذكورا؟

Did you 'aḥlabt' or 'ajlabt'? The meaning of 'aḥlabt' is: Did your she-camels give birth to females? And the meaning of 'ajlabt': Did they give birth to males?

ما له حلب ولا جلب، عن ابن الأعرابي، ولم يفسره؛

May he have no milk and no offspring, according to Ibn Al-A'rabi, and he did not explain it;

ما له أحلب ولا أجلب، ومعنى أحلب أي ولدت إبله الإناث دون الذكور، ولا أجلب: إذا دعا لإبله أن لا تلد الذكور، لأنه المحق الخفي لذهاب اللبن وانقطاع النسل.

May he have no 'aḥlab' and no 'ajlab'. The meaning of 'aḥlab' is that his camels gave birth to females without males, and 'la ajlab': if he prays for his camels not to give birth to males, because it is the hidden loss of milk and the cessation of offspring.

واستحلب اللبن: استدره.

And to 'istahlab' milk: to draw it out.

احلبني أي اكفني الحلب، وأحلبني، بقطع الألف، أي أعني على الحلب.

Give me milk, meaning suffice me with milking, and 'aḥlibnī', with a cut 'alif', meaning help me with milking.

والحلبتان: الغداة والعشي، عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وإنما سميتا بذلك للحلب الذي يكون فيهما.

And 'al-ḥalabatān: the morning and the evening, according to Ibn Al-A'rabi; and they were named that because of the milking that occurs in them.

وهاجرة حلوب: تحلب العرق.

And a hot day 'ḥalūb': it makes sweat flow.

وتحلب بدنه عرقا: سال عرقه؛

And his body 'taḥallaba' with sweat: his sweat flowed;

وحبشيين، إذا تحلبا، ... قالا نعم، قالا نعم، وصوبا
