And al-tha'bah is a type of lizard called Sam Abrass, except that it has a green head and throat, bulging eyes, you never encounter it except with its mouth open, and it is among the worst of creatures, it stings and its victim hardly recovers, and its plural is thu'b.
والثعبة دابة أغلظ من الوزغة تلسع، وربما قتلت، وفي المثل: ما الخوافي كالقلبة، ولا الخناز كالثعبة.
And al-tha'bah is a creature thicker than a gecko that stings, and sometimes kills, and in the proverb: The khawāfī are not like the qalbāh, nor are the khunāz like the tha'bah.
والثعبة نبتة «1» شبيهة بالثعلة إلا أنها أخشن ورقا وساقها أغبر، وليس لها حمل، ولا منفعة فيها، وهي من شجر الجبل تنبت في منابت الثوع، ولها ظل كثيف، كل هذا عن أبي حنيفة.
And al-tha'bah is a plant similar to al-tha'labah except that its leaves are rougher and its stem is dusty, it has no fruit, and no benefit in it, and it is from the trees of the mountain growing in places of al-thu', and it has dense shade, all of this is from Abu Hanifa.
قال الخليل: الثعبان ماء، الواحد ثعب.
Al-Khalil said: Al-thu'bān is water, singular is thu'b.
