Allah created the earth ('al-turbah') on Saturday. Meaning the ground.

It was said that it meant rejection and disappointment, as it is said to the rejected and disappointed seeker: 'nothing was obtained in his hand but dust ('al-turāb').'

وفي الحديث: احثوا في وجوه المداحين التراب.

And in the hadith: 'Throw dust ('al-turāb') in the faces of those who praise excessively.'

فجعل رجل يثني عليه، وجعل المقداد يحثو في وجهه التراب

A man began to praise him, and Miqdād started throwing dust ('al-turāb') in his face.

وأترب الشيء: وضع عليه التراب، فتترب أي تلطخ بالتراب.

And 'atruba' the thing: dust was placed upon it, so it became 'tatarabba' meaning smeared with dust.

وتربته تتريبا، وتربت الكتاب تتريبا، وتربت القرطاس فأنا أتربه.

And I 'tarribuhu' its grave, and I 'tarribuhu' the book, and I 'tarribuhu' the parchment, and I am 'utribuhu' it.

And in the hadith of Fāṭimah bint Qays, may Allah be pleased with her: 'As for Mu'āwiyah, he is a 'tarib' man, he has no wealth,' meaning poor.

وترب تربا ومتربة: خسر وافتقر فلزق بالتراب.

And 'tariba' ('taraban') and 'matrabah': he lost and became poor and stuck to dust.

وأترب: استغنى وكثر ماله، فصار كالتراب، هذا الأعرف.

And 'atrub': he became rich and his wealth increased, becoming like dust, this is the most known.

قال اللحياني قال بعضهم: الترب المحتاج، وكله من التراب.

Al-Lihyānī said some of them said: 'Al-turb' is the needy one, and it is all from dust.

والمترب: الغني إما على السلب، وإما على أن ماله مثل التراب.

And 'al-mutarrib': the rich one, either by reversal, or because his wealth is like dust.

والتتريب: كثرة المال.

And 'al-tattrīb': abundance of wealth.

والتتريب: قلة المال أيضا.

And 'al-tattrīb': scarcity of wealth also.

ويقال: تربت يداه، وهو على الدعاء، أي لا أصاب خيرا.

And it is said: 'taribat yadāhu', and it is a supplication, meaning 'may he not achieve good'.

وفي الدعاء: تربا له وجندلا

And in supplication: 'May he be 'taraban' and 'jandalān' for him.'

فإذا أرادوا الفقر قالوا: ترب يترب.

And if they intend poverty, they say: 'tariba yatarabu'.

ورجل ترب: فقير.

And a man 'tarib': poor.

ورجل ترب: لازق بالتراب من الحاجة ليس بينه وبين الأرض شيء.

And a man 'tarib': sticking to dust from need, with nothing between him and the earth.

كان يقول لأحدنا عند المعاتبة: ترب جبينه.

He used to say to one of us when admonishing: 'May his forehead be 'tarib'.'

وأما قوله لبعض أصحابه: ترب نحرك، فقتل الرجل شهيدا ، فإنه محمول على ظاهره.

And as for his saying to some of his companions: 'May your chest be 'tarib', so the man was killed as a martyr,' it is taken literally.

وقالوا: التراب لك، فرفعوه، وإن كان فيه معنى الدعاء، لأنه اسم وليس بمصدر

And they said: 'Al-turāb' is for you, and they raised it (nominative), even though it has the meaning of supplication, because it is a noun and not a masdar.

وحكى اللحياني: التراب للأبعد. قال: فنصب كأنه دعاء.

And Al-Lihyānī narrated: 'Al-turāb' is for the distant one. He said: 'And it is accusative as if it were a supplication.'

والمتربة: المسكنة والفاقة.

And 'al-matrabah': destitution and poverty.

ومسكين ذو متربة أي لاصق بالتراب.

And a poor person ('miskin') with 'matrabah' meaning sticking to dust.

وجمل تربوت: ذلول

And a camel 'tarbūt': docile.

بكر تربوت: مذلل، فخص به البكر، وكذلك ناقة تربوت

A young camel ('bikr') 'tarbūt': trained, and it was specified for the young camel, and likewise a female camel 'tarbūt'

والترتب: الأمر الثابت، بضم التاءين.

And 'al-tartattub': the fixed matter, with damma on both 'tā's.

والترتب: العبد السوء

And 'al-tartattub': the bad servant.

وأترب الرجل إذا ملك عبدا ملك ثلاث مرات.

And the man 'atrub' if he owned a slave who owned three times (his wealth).

والتربات: الأنامل، الواحدة تربة.

And 'al-tarbāt': the fingertips, the singular is 'turbah'.

الترائب: موضع القلادة من الصدر، وقيل هو ما بين الترقوة إلى الثندوة

Al-tarā'ib: the place of the necklace on the chest, and it was said it is what is between the collarbone and the breast.

خلق من ماء دافق يخرج من بين الصلب والترائب

Created from a gushing fluid ('mā' dāfiq') that emerges from between the loins ('al-ṣulb') and the ribs ('al-tarā'ib').

قيل: الترائب: ما تقدم.

It was said: 'Al-tarā'ib': what comes forward.

وقال الفراء: يعني صلب الرجل وترائب المرأة.

And Al-Farrā' said: meaning the loins of the man and the ribs ('tarā'ib') of the woman.

وقال أهل اللغة أجمعون: الترائب موضع القلادة من الصدر

And all the linguists said: 'Al-tarā'ib' is the place of the necklace on the chest.

مهفهفة بيضاء، غير مفاضة، ... ترائبها مصقولة كالسجنجل

Slender, white, not broad... her ribs ('tarā'ibuhā') are polished like mirrors.

وقيل: التريبتان الضلعان اللتان تليان الترقوتين

And it was said: 'al-tarībatān' are the two ribs adjacent to the collarbones.

ومن ذهب يلوح على تريب، ... كلون العاج، ليس له غضون

And of gold shining on the 'tarīb'... like ivory, it has no wrinkles.

والترقوتان: العظمان المشرفان في أعلى الصدر من صدر رأسي المنكبين إلى طرف ثغرة النحر

And 'al-tarqūwatān': the two prominent bones at the top of the chest from the chest of the shoulders to the edge of the hollow of the neck.

وفي الحديث ذكر التريبة، وهي أعلى صدر الإنسان تحت الذقن، وجمعها الترائب.

And in the hadith, 'al-tarībah' is mentioned, which is the upper chest of a human below the chin, and its plural is 'al-tarā'ib'.

وتريبة البعير: منخره

And the 'tarībah' of a camel: its nostril.

والتراب: أصل ذراع الشاة، أنثى

And 'al-turāb': the base of a sheep's foreleg, feminine.

لأنفضنهم نفض القصاب التراب الوذمة.

I will shake them off like the predator shakes off the 'turāb' of the limb.

والتراب: التي سقطت في التراب فتتربت، فالقصاب ينفضها.

And 'al-turāb': that which fell into dust and became dusty ('tatarabbat'), so the predator shakes it off.

والوذمة: المنقطعة الأوذام، وهي السيور التي يشد بها عرى الدلو.

And 'al-wadhmah': that which is cut off from its straps, which are the straps used to tie the handles of a bucket.

وهي التي قد سقطت في التراب، وقيل الكروش كلها تسمى تربة لأنها يحصل فيها التراب من المرتع

And it is that which has fallen into dust, and it is said all stomachs ('kurūsh') are called 'turbah' because dust gets into them from the pasture.

والترب: اللدة والسن. يقال: هذه ترب هذه أي لدتها.

And 'al-turb': the birth-mate and the age. It is said: 'This is the 'turb' of that one,' meaning her birth-mate.

وقيل: ترب الرجل الذي ولد معه، وأكثر ما يكون ذلك في المؤنث، يقال: هي تربها وهما تربان والجمع أتراب.

And it was said: 'turb' of a man is he who was born with him, and this is most common with females, it is said: 'She is her 'turb', and they are 'turbān', and the plural is 'atrāb'.

وتاربتها: صارت تربها.

And 'tārabathā': she became her 'turb'.

تتارب بيضا، إذا استلعبت، ... كأدم الظباء ترف الكباثا

They became peers ('tatarābu') with white ones, when they played... like the skins of gazelles, the 'kabāth' flutter.
