آب إلى الشيء: رجع
He returned to the thing: he went back.
يؤو ب أوبا وإيابا وأوبة وأيبة، على المعاقبة، وإيبة، بالكسر، عن اللحياني: رجع.
He returns, with a return (awban), and a returning (iyaban), and a return (awbatan), and a return (aybatan), reciprocally, and a return (aybatan, with kasr), from Al-Lihyani: he returned.
آب الغائب يؤوب مآبا إذا رجع
The absent one returns, he returns (ya'ubu) a return place (maaban) when he returns.
وليهنئك أوبة الغائب أي إيابه.
And may the return of the absent one, meaning his return (iyabuhu), bring you joy.
أنه كان إذا أقبل من سفر قال: آيبون تائبون، لربنا حامدون
That when he returned from a journey, he would say: 'Returning, repenting, to our Lord, praising.'
وإن له عندنا لزلفى وحسن مآب*
And indeed, for him is nearness with Us and a beautiful return (maab).
كل شيء رجع إلى مكانه فقد آب يؤوب إيابا إذا رجع.
Everything that returned to its place has indeed returned (aaba) and returns (ya'ubu) a return (iyaban) when it returns.
هو سريع الأوبة أي الرجوع.
He is quick of return (al-awbah), meaning of returning.
توبا لربنا أوبا أي توبا راجعا مكررا
Repentance to our Lord, a repeated return (awban), meaning a returning, repeated.
إن إلينا إيابهم وإيابهم أي رجوعهم
Indeed, to Us is their return (iyabuhum) and their return (iyabuhum), meaning their returning.
يا جبال أوبي معه ، ويقرأ أوبي معه
O mountains, return (ubi) with him, and it is read: return (ubi) with him.
فمن قرأ أوبي معه ، فمعناه يا جبال سبحي معه ورجعي التسبيح
So whoever reads 'ubi ma'ahu' means: O mountains, glorify with him and repeat the glorification.
ومن قرأ أوبي معه، فمعناه عودي معه في التسبيح كلما عاد فيه.
And whoever reads 'ubi ma'ahu' means: return (udi) with him in glorification whenever he returns to it.
ورزق الله مؤتاب وغادي
And God's provision is for the one who returns (mu'ataba) and the one who goes forth.
يجوز أن يكون آبك متعديا بنفسه أي جاءك مرهف، نصل محدد
It is permissible that 'aabaka' is transitive by itself, meaning a sharp sword came to you, a sharpened blade.
ويجوز أن يكون أراد آب إليك، فحذف وأوصل.
And it is permissible that he intended 'aaba ilayka' (returned to you), and omitted 'ila' and connected directly.
ورجل آيب من قوم أواب وأياب وأوب، الأخيرة اسم للجمع، وقيل: جمع آيب.
And a man returning (aa'ib) from a people of frequent returners (awwab) and returners (ayab) and returners (awb), the latter is a collective noun, and it is said: a plural of aa'ib.
وقيل لا يكون الإياب إلا الرجوع إلى أهله ليلا.
And it is said that 'al-iyab' is only returning to one's family at night.
يقال للرجل يرجع بالليل إلى أهله: قد تأوبهم وأتابهم، فهو مؤتاب ومتأوب، مثل ائتمره.
It is said of a man who returns at night to his family: he has visited them (ta'awwahum) and visited them (ataabahum), so he is one who visits at night (mu'attab) and one who visits at night (muta'awwib), like 'itammara'.
وأواب: كثير الرجوع إلى الله، عز وجل، من ذنبه.
And 'awwab': one who frequently returns to God, the Almighty, from his sin.
والأواب: التائب.
And 'al-awwab': the repentant one.
الأواب الذي يذنب ثم يتوب ثم يذنب ثم يتوب
The 'awwab' is one who sins, then repents, then sins, then repents.
الأواب الرجاع الذي يرجع إلى التوبة والطاعة، من آب يؤوب إذا رجع.
The 'awwab' is the one who returns, who returns to repentance and obedience, from 'aaba ya'ubu' if he returns.
لكل أواب حفيظ
For every frequent returner (awwab) is a guardian.
وكل ذي غيبة يؤوب، ... وغائب الموت لا يؤوب
And every one who is absent returns (ya'ubu), ... but the one absent in death does not return (ya'ubu).
تأوبه منها عقابيل أي راجعه.
He revisited them (ta'awwahaha) from them, meaning he reconsidered them.
داود ذا الأيد إنه أواب
David, owner of strength, indeed he is a frequent returner (awwab).
صلاة الأوابين حين ترمض الفصال
The prayer of the frequent returners (al-awwabin) when the young camels' feet burn.
آبت الشمس تؤوب إيابا وأيوبا: غابت في مآبها أي في مغيبها، كأنها رجعت إلى مبدئها.
The sun returned (aabat) and returns (ta'ubu) a return (iyaban) and a return (ayuban): it set in its setting place (maabiha), meaning in its place of setting, as if it returned to its origin.
فرأى مغيب الشمس، عند مآبها، ... في عين ذي خلب وثأط حرمد
So he saw the setting of the sun, at its return place (maabiha), ... in the eye of one with deceit and the heat of harmad.
وأعجلنا الألاهة أن تؤوبا
And we hastened the god (the sun) not to set (tu'awiba).
شغلونا عن صلاة الوسطى حتى آبت الشمس ملأ الله قلوبهم نارا
They occupied us from the middle prayer until the sun set (aabat), may God fill their hearts with fire.
تأوبه وتأيبه على المعاقبة: أتاه ليلا، وهو المتأوب والمتأيب.
He visited him at night (ta'awwaba-hu) and visited him at night (ta'ayyaba-hu) reciprocally: he came to him at night, and he is the one who visits at night (al-muta'awwib) and the one who visits at night (al-muta'ayyib).
وأبت إلى بني فلان، وتأوبتهم إذا أتيتهم ليلا.
And I returned (abtu) to the children of so-and-so, and I visited them at night (ta'awwabtuhum) if I came to them at night.
وأبت الماء وتأوبته وأتبته: وردته ليلا.
And I went to the water (abtu al-ma'), and I went to the water at night (ta'awwabtuhu), and I went to the water (atabtuhu): I came to it at night.
لا يرد الماء إلا ائتيابا
He does not come to the water except for a nightly visit (i'tiyaban).
لا تردن الماء، إلا آيبه، ... أخشى عليك معشرا قراضبه، سود الوجوه، يأكلون الآهبه
Do not come to the water, except as a nightly returner (aa'ibah), ... I fear for you a fierce company, black-faced, who eat the prepared (al-aahibah).
والتأويب في السير نهارا نظير الإسآد في السير ليلا.
And 'al-ta'wib' in traveling by day is analogous to 'al-isad' in traveling by night.
التأويب: أن يسير النهار أجمع وينزل الليل.
'Al-ta'wib': to travel the entire day and descend at night.
يوم يوم مقامات وأندية، ... ويوم سير إلى الأعداء، تأويب
Two days: a day of gatherings and assemblies, ... and a day of travel towards the enemies, daytime travel (ta'wib).
أوب القوم تأويبا أي ساروا بالنهار، وأسأدوا إذا ساروا بالليل.
The people traveled by day (awwama) a daytime travel (ta'wiban), meaning they traveled by day, and they traveled by night (as'adu) if they traveled by night.
كأن أوب مائح ذي أوب، ... أوب يديها برقاق سهب
As if the movement (awb) of a water-carrier with movement (awb), ... the movement (awb) of her hands on the smooth, vast land.
وما زال ذلك أوبه أي عادته وهجيراه
And that has remained his habit (awbuhu), meaning his custom and his constant practice.
رباء شماء، لا يأوي لقلتها ... إلا السحاب، وإلا الأوب والسبل
A high, lofty place, which does not shelter for its scarcity ... except the clouds, and the bees (al-awb) and the rain.
سميت أوبا لإيابها إلى المباءة.
They were named 'awb' because of their return (iyabiha) to the hive.
حتى إذا جنح الليل آبت كلها، حتى لا يتخلف منها شيء.
Until when night fell, they all returned (aabat), so that none remained behind.
ومآبة البئر: مثل مباءتها، حيث يجتمع إليه الماء فيها.
And the return place of the well (ma'abatu al-bi'r): like its place of origin (mab'atiha), where the water gathers in it.
فآبك، هلا، والليالي بغرة، ... تلم، وفي الأيام عنك غفول
May God distance you (aabaka), O you who are heedless, and the nights are in a state of unawareness, ... you approach, and in the days you are neglectful.
فآبك، ألا كنت آليت حلفة، ... عليه، وأغلقت الرتاج المضببا
May God distance you (aabaka), that you did not swear an oath, ... upon it, and closed the barred door.
آبك، أيه بي، أو مصدر ... من حمر الجلة، جأب حشور
May God distance you (aabaka), O you who are stubborn, or a source ... from the red dung of camels, a crowded dung heap.
أوب الأديم: قوره، عن ثعلب.
The tanning of the hide (awb al-adim): its paring (taqwirihi), from Tha'lab.
المأوب: المدور المقور الململم
Al-ma'wub: the rounded, the pared, the smoothed.
قد حال، بين دريسيه، مؤوبة، ... مسع، لها، بعضاه الأرض، تهزيز
Something has intervened between its two worn parts, a night wind (mu'awwabah), ... it has traversed, for it, part of the earth, with a shaking.
فلا، وأبي مآب لنأتينها، ... وإن كانت بها عرب وروم
No, by the Lord of Ma'ab (a place name), we will surely come to it, ... even if Arabs and Romans are there.
فآب إليه ناس أي جاؤوا إليه من كل ناحية.
And people returned (aaba) to him, meaning they came to him from every direction.
وجاؤوا من كل أوب أي من كل طريق ووجه وناحية.
And they came from every direction (awb), meaning from every road, face, and direction.
على هيلة، من كل أوب، نفالها
Upon a fright, from every direction (awb), its escape.
من كل أوب أي من كل وجه، لأنه لا مكمن لها من كل وجه عن يمينها وعن شمالها ومن خلفها.
From every direction (awb), meaning from every side, because there is no hiding place for it from any side, from its right, its left, and its rear.
ورمى أوبا أو أوبين أي وجها أو وجهين.
And he shot one direction (awban) or two directions (awbayn), meaning one side or two sides.
ورمينا أوبا أو أوبين أي رشقا أو رشقين.
And we shot one volley (awban) or two volleys (awbayn), meaning one shot or two shots.
