When Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with them, recited the verse, Glorified and Exalted is He: 'And fruits and fodder,' he said, 'What is fodder?' Then he said, 'We were not tasked nor commanded with this.'

ومن حديث قس بن ساعدة: فجعل يرتع أبا وأصيد ضبا.
And from the hadith of Qass ibn Sa'idah: 'He began to graze on prepared pasture and hunt lizards.'
وأب للسير يئب ويؤب أبا وأبيبا وأبابة: تهيأ للذهاب وتجهز.
And 'ab' for travel, y'ab and ya'ub, aba, abiban, and ababatan: means to prepare for going and to get ready.
أخ قد طوى كشحا، وأب ليذهبا أي صرمتكم في تهيئي لمفارقتكم، ومن تهيأ للمفارقة، فهو كمن صرم.
A brother who has turned away, and is prepared to go, meaning I have parted from you in my preparation for your departure, and whoever prepares for departure is like one who has parted.

قال أبو عبيد: أببت أؤب أبا إذا عزمت على المسير وتهيأت.
Abu Ubaid said: 'Ababtu, a'ub, aba, if I resolve to travel and prepare.'
وهو في أبابه وإبابته وأبابته أي في جهازه.
And he is in his 'ababihi', 'ibabatihi', and 'ababatihi', meaning in his equipment.
التهذيب: والوب: التهيؤ للحملة في الحرب، يقال: هب ووب إذا تهيأ للحملة.
Al-Tahdhib: And 'al-awb' is the preparation for an assault in war; it is said: 'hab wa wob' if one prepares for an assault.
قال أبو منصور: والأصل فيه أب فقلبت الهمزة واوا.
Abu Mansur said: 'The origin is 'ab', so the hamza was changed to a waw.'
ابن الأعرابي: أب إذا حرك، وأب إذا هزم بحملة لا مكذوبة فيها.
Ibn al-A'rabi: 'Ab' means to move, and 'ab' means to be routed by a charge that is not false.
والأب: النزاع إلى الوطن.
And 'al-ab' is the inclination towards the homeland.
وأب إلى وطنه يؤب أبا وأبابة وإبابة: نزع، والمعروف عند ابن دريد الكسر، وأنشد لهشام أخي ذي الرمة:
And 'ab' to his homeland, ya'ub, aba, ababatan, and ibabatan: means to be drawn; and the known pronunciation with Ibn Duraid is with a kasra, and he recited for Hisham, the brother of Dhu al-Rummah:
وأب يده إلى سيفه: ردها إليه ليستله.
And 'ab' his hand to his sword: means he drew it back to himself to unsheathe it.
وأبت أبابة الشيء وإبابته: استقامت طريقته.
And 'abat ababatuhu wa ibabatuhu' of a thing: means its way became straight.
وقالوا للظباء: إن أصابت الماء، فلا عباب، وإن لم تصب الماء، فلا أباب. أي لم تأتب له ولا تتهيأ لطلبه، وهو مذكور في موضعه.
And they said to the gazelles: 'If they find water, there is no abundance, and if they do not find water, there is no 'abab'. Meaning they did not come to it nor prepare to seek it, and it is mentioned in its place.
والأباب: الماء والسراب، عن ابن الأعرابي، وأنشد:
And 'al-abab': is water and mirage, from Ibn al-A'rabi, and he recited:
أباب بحر ضاحك هزوق
Waves of a laughing, playful sea
قال ابن جني: ليست الهمزة فيه بدلا من عين عباب، وإن كنا قد سمعنا، وإنما هو فعال من أب إذا تهيأ.
Ibn Jinni said: 'The hamza in it is not a substitute for the 'ayn of 'ubab', even though we have heard it; rather, it is 'af'al from 'ab' if one prepares.'
واستئب أبا: اتخذه، نادر، عن ابن الأعرابي، وإنما قياسه استأب.
And 'ista'ab aba': means to adopt it, rare, from Ibn al-A'rabi, and its standard form is 'ista'ab'.
