وفي التنزيل: من ورائه جهنم ؛ أي بين يديه
And in the Revelation: 'from behind him is Hell'; meaning, before him.
وقال الزجاج: وراء يكون لخلف ولقدام ومعناها ما توارى عنك أي ما استتر عنك
And Al-Zajjaj said: Waraa' can mean behind and in front, and its meaning is what is hidden from you, i.e., what is concealed from you.
وأما أمام، فلا يكون إلا قدام أبدا
As for amaam, it only means in front, always.
وكان وراءهم ملك يأخذ كل سفينة غصبا
And behind them was a king seizing every ship by force.
قال ابن عباس، رضي الله عنهما كان أمامهم
Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: It was before them.
أليس ورائي، إن تراخت منيتي، ... لزوم العصا تحنى عليها الأصابع
Is there not behind me, if my death is delayed, ... the necessity of the staff on which the fingers bend?
ابن السكيت: الوراء: الخلف
Ibn Al-Sikkit: Al-waraa' means the behind.
وقال: ووراء وأمام وقدام يؤنثن ويذكرن
And he said: Waraa', amaam, and quddaam are feminine and masculine.
ويصغر أمام فيقال أميم ذلك وأميمة ذلك، وقديدم ذلك وقديدمة ذلك
And amaam is made diminutive, so it is said 'umeim' for that and 'umeimah' for that, and 'qudeidim' for that and 'qudeidah' for that.
وقال أبو الهيثم: الوراء، ممدود: الخلف، ويكون الأمام
And Abu Al-Haytham said: Al-waraa', the extended form: the behind, and it can be the front.
وقال الفراء: لا يجوز أن يقال لرجل وراءك: هو بين يديك، ولا لرجل بين يديك: هو وراءك، إنما يجوز ذلك في المواقيت من الليالي والأيام والدهر
And Al-Farra' said: It is not permissible to say of a man behind you that he is before you, nor of a man before you that he is behind you; this is only permissible for time periods of nights, days, and duration.
من ذلك قوله، عز وجل: وكان وراءهم ملك ، أي أمامهم
From that is His saying, the Almighty: 'And behind them was a king', meaning, before them.
وكان كقوله: من ورائه جهنم ؛ أي أنها بين يديه
And it was like His saying: 'from behind him is Hell'; meaning, it is before him.
ابن الأعرابي في قوله، عز وجل: بما وراءه وهو الحق . أي بما سواه
Ibn Al-A'rabi on His saying, the Almighty: 'by what is beyond it, and it is the Truth'. Meaning, by what is other than it.
والوراء: الخلف، والوراء: القدام، والوراء: ابن الابن
And al-waraa': the behind, and al-waraa': the front, and al-waraa': the son of the son (grandson).
وقوله، عز وجل: فمن ابتغى وراء ذلك* . أي سوى ذلك
And His saying, the Almighty: 'whoever seeks beyond that*'. Meaning, other than that.
قال الأصمعي: قال وراء الدار لأنه ملقى، لا يحتاج إليه، متنح مع النساء من الكبر والهرم
Al-Asma'i said: He said 'behind the house' because he was neglected, not needed, secluded with the women due to old age and frailty.
قال اللحياني: وراء مؤنثة، وإن ذكرت جاز
Al-Lihyani said: Waraa' is feminine, and if it is used as masculine, it is permissible.
وقالوا وراءك إذا قلت انظر لما خلفك
And they said 'waraaka' when you say 'look behind you'.
والوراء: ولد الولد
And al-waraa': the child of the child (grandchild).
وفي التنزيل العزيز: ومن وراء إسحاق يعقوب
And in the Noble Revelation: 'And from behind Isaac is Jacob'.
قال الشعبي: الوراء: ولد الولد
Al-Sha'bi said: Al-waraa': the child of the child (grandchild).
ورأت الرجل: دفعته
Wara'ta the man: you pushed him.
ورأ من الطعام: امتلأ
Wara'a from food: to be full.
الوراء: الضخم الغليظ الألواح، عن الفارسي
Al-waraa': the large, stout, broad-shouldered, from Al-Farisi.
وما أورئت بالشيء أي لم أشعر به
And I was not made aware of the thing, meaning I did not feel it.
من حيث زارتني ولم أور بها اضطر فأبدل
From where she visited me and I was not aware of her, so she was forced and replaced.
تسلب الكانس، لم يوأر بها، ... شعبة الساق، إذا الظل عقل
Stripping the crouching one, she was not made aware of it, ... the shank, when the shadow is perceived.
قال: وريته وأورأته إذا أعلمته
He said: I informed him and I made him aware if I notified him.
كأن ناقته لم تضئ للظبي الكانس، ولم تبن له، فيشعر بها لسرعتها، حتى انتهت إلى كناسه فند منها جافلا
As if his she-camel did not appear to the crouching gazelle, nor become clear to it, so it would sense her due to her speed, until she reached its lair and it fled from it startled.
دعاني، فلم أورأ به، فأجبته، ... فمد بثدي بيننا، غير أقطعا
He called me, and I was not aware of it, so I answered him, ... and he extended a breast between us, not severed.
أي دعاني ولم أشعر به
Meaning, he called me and I was not aware of it.
الأصمعي: استورأت الإبل إذا ترابعت على نفار واحد
Al-Asma'i: Camels 'istawra'at' if they run together in one stampede.
وقال أبو زيد: ذلك إذا نفرت فصعدت الجبل، فإذا كان نفارها في السهل قيل: استأورت
And Abu Zayd said: That is when they stampede and ascend the mountain; if their stampede is in the plain, it is said: 'ista'awrat'.
قال: وهذا كلام بني عقيل
He said: And this is the speech of Banu 'Uqayl.
