ودأ الشيء: سواه.
He leveled the thing: he made it even.
وتودأت عليه الأرض: اشتملت، وقيل تهدمت وتكسرت.
And the earth encompassed him: it surrounded him, and it was said it collapsed and broke apart.
وقال ابن شميل: يقال تودأت على فلان الأرض وهو ذهاب الرجل في أباعد الأرض حتى لا تدري ما صنع.
And Ibn Shumayl said: It is said 'the earth encompassed so-and-so' when a man goes to distant lands until you do not know what he has done.
وقد تودأت عليه إذا مات أيضا، وإن مات في أهله.
And he may have perished upon it if he also died, even if he died among his family.
فما أنا إلا مثل من قد تودأت ... عليه البلاد، غير أن لم أمت بعد
I am but like one upon whom the lands have closed in, except that I have not yet died.
وتودأت عليه الأرض: غيبته وذهبت به.
And the earth encompassed him: it hid him and took him away.
وتودأت عليه الأرض أي استوت عليه مثل ما تستوي على الميت.
And the earth encompassed him, meaning it became level upon him like it becomes level upon the dead.
وللأرض كم من صالح قد تودأت ... عليه، فوارته بلماعة قفر
And for the earth, how many a righteous person has it covered... upon him, and it buried him in a barren, shining place.
إذا ودأتنا الأرض، إذ هي ودأت، ... وأفرخ من بيض الأمور مقوبها
When the earth engulfed us, when it engulfed us, ... and its calamities hatched from the eggs of matters.
ودأتنا الأرض: غيبتنا.

يقال: تودأت عليه الأرض، فهي مودأة.
It is said: The earth encompassed him, and it is 'mawda'ah' (a place of perishing).
وهذا كما قيل أحصن، فهو محصن، وأسهب، فهو مسهب، وألفج، فهو ملفج.
And this is like it was said 'ihsan', so he is 'muhsan', and 'sahaba', so he is 'musahab', and 'lafaja', so he is 'malfaj'.
قال: وليس في الكلام مثلها.
He said: And there is nothing like it in the language.
ودأت عليه الأرض توديئا: سويتها عليه.
The earth leveled upon him 'tawdi'an': I leveled it upon him.
أأبي إن تصبح رهين مودإ، ... زلخ الجوانب، قعره ملحود
O Abi, if you become a captive of a grave, ... smooth of sides, its bottom dug out.
فلرب مكروب كررت وراءه، ... فطعنته، وبنو أبيه شهود
For many a distressed person I turned back for him, ... and I speared him, while his father's kin were witnesses.
أبو عمرو: المودأة: المهلكة والمفازة، وهي في لفظ المفعول به.
Abu Amr: 'Al-mawda'ah': the place of destruction and the wilderness, and it is in the form of the passive participle.
كائن قطعنا إليكم من مودأة، ... كأن أعلامها، في آلها، القزع
We have cut through to you from a desolate place, ... as if its landmarks, among its people, were scattered clouds.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: المودأة، حفرة الميت، والتودئة: الدفن.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: 'Al-mawda'ah', the grave of the dead, and 'at-tawdia': burial.
لو قد ثويت مودأ لرهينة، ... زلج الجوانب، راكد الأحجار
If you were to lie in a grave, a resting place, ... smooth of sides, with stagnant stones.
والودأ: الهلاك، مقصور مهموز.
And 'al-wad'u': destruction, shortened and hamzated.
وتودأ عليه: أهلكه.
And 'tawada'a 'alayhi': it destroyed him.
ودأ فلان بالقوم تودئة.
So-and-so perished among the people 'tawdia'.
وتودأت علي وعني الأخبار: انقطعت وتوارت.
And news ceased coming to me and from me: it was cut off and hidden.
ودأ الفرس يدأ، بوزن ودع يدع، إذا أدلى.
The horse 'wada'a' it 'yada'u', on the pattern of 'wada'a yad'u', if it lowered its head.
قال أبو الهيثم: وهذا وهم ليس في ودى الفرس، إذا أدلى، همز.
Abu Al-Haytham said: And this is an error, for the horse does not have 'wada'a' when it lowers its head, with a hamza.
وقال أبو مالك: تودأت على مالي أي أخذته وأحرزته.
And Abu Malik said: 'Tawada'a 'ala mali' means I took possession of my property and secured it.
