Ibn al-Bari said: And some linguists mentioned that 'hayi' is a noun for a command verb, meaning 'wake up' and 'be alert', similar to 'sah' and 'mah' in their being names for 'be silent' and 'stop', and the vocative particle entered upon it as it entered upon the command verb in the saying of Al-Shammakh: 'Ala ya usqiyani qabla ghirati Sinjar' (Oh, give me to drink before the raid of Sinjar).
