And it is fay'al from that, and the nisbah to it is ṭā'ī, which is irregular, as was said for the nisbah to al-Ḥīrah, ḥāriyy. Its regular form would be ṭayyī'ī like ṭayyi'ī. So they inverted the first ya' into an alif and deleted the second, as was said for the nisbah to Ṭayyib, ṭayyibī, disliking kasras and ya's, and they substituted an alif for the ya' in it, as they substituted it for it in zabānī.
فأما قول من قال: إنه سمي طيئا لأنه أول من طوى المناهل، فغير صحيح في التصريف.
As for the saying of one who said: he was named Tayyi' because he was the first to fold (ṭawā) the watering places, it is not correct in morphology.
فأما قول ابن أصرم: عادات طي في بني أسد، ... ري القنا، وخضاب كل حسام
As for the saying of Ibn Aṣram: 'Customs of Tayy among Banu Asad, ... quenching the spears, and dyeing every sword',
إنما أراد عادات طيئ، فحذف.
He only intended 'customs of Tayyi'', so he omitted (the final ya').
ورواه بعضهم طيئ، غير مصروف، جعله اسما للقبيلة.
And some of them narrated it as Ṭayyi', indeclinable, making it a name for the tribe.
