الجباء من النساء، بوزن جباع: التي إذا نظرت لا تروع؛

The 'jabā' among women, on the pattern of 'jabā': she who, when looked at, does not frighten.

وهي التي إذا نظرت إلى الرجال، انخزلت راجعة لصغرها؛

And she is the one who, when she looks at men, shrinks back due to her smallness.

وروى غيره جباع، وهي القصيرة، وهو مذكور في موضعه، شبهها بسهم قصير يرمي به الصبيان يقال له الجباع.

And others narrated 'jubā', and it means short, and it is mentioned in its place, likening her to a short arrow that boys shoot with, called 'al-jubā'.

وجبأ عليه الأسود من جحره يجبأ جبأ وجبوءا: طلع وخرج، وكذلك الضبع والضب واليربوع، ولا يكون ذلك إلا أن يفزعك.

And the lion emerged from its den upon him, it emerges with emergence and emergence: it appeared and came out, and likewise the hyena, the lizard, and the jerboa, and this only happens when it startles you.

وجبأ على القوم: طلع عليهم مفاجأة.

And he emerged upon the people: he appeared upon them suddenly.

وأجبأ عليهم: أشرف.

فلما رأونا جبئوا من أخبيتهم أي خرجوا منها.

الإجباء: أن يغيب الرجل إبله، عن المصدق.

Al-ijbā': is for a man to hide his camels from the tax collector.

يقال: جبأ عن الشيء: توارى عنه، وأجبيته إذا واريته.

It is said: he withdrew from the thing: he hid from it, and I made him hide it if you concealed it.

وجبأ الضب في جحره إذا استخفى.

And the lizard emerged in its burrow when it hid.

والجبء: الكمأة الحمراء؛

And al-jab'u: the red truffle.

والجبأة هنة بيضاء كأنها كمء ولا ينتفع بها، والجمع أجبؤ وجبأة مثال فقع وفقعة؛

And al-jab'atu is a white thing like a truffle, and it is not useful, and the plural is 'ajbu' and 'jab'ah' like 'f'aq' and 'faq'ah'.

والجبأة فاسم للجمع، كما ذهب إليه في كمء وكمأة لأن فعلا ليس مما يكسر على فعلة، لأن فعلة ليست من أبنية الجموع.

And al-jab'atu is a name for the collective, as he went with it in 'kam' and 'kam'ah' because 'fa'al' is not something broken into 'fa'lah', because 'fa'lah' is not from the patterns of plurals.

وتحقيره: جبيئة على لفظه، ولا يرد إلى واحده ثم يجمع بالألف والتاء لأن أسماء الجموع بمنزلة الآحاد؛

And its diminutive: 'jubay'ah' according to its form, and it is not returned to its singular then collected with alif and ta' because collective nouns are like singulars.

والجبء: الكمأة السود، والسود خيار الكمأة، وأنشد:

And al-jab'u: the black truffles, and the black ones are the best of truffles, and he recited:

عساقل وجبأ، فيها قضض فجبأ هنا يجوز أن يكون جمع جبء كجبأة، وهو نادر، ويجوز أن يكون أراد جبأة، فحذف الهاء للضرورة، ويجوز أن يكون اسما للجمع؛

And 'asāqil and 'jab'a, in it are pebbles, so 'jab'a' here may be a plural of 'jab'' like 'jab'ah', and it is rare, and it may be that he intended 'jab'ah', so he omitted the ha' out of necessity, and it may be a collective noun.

وأجبأت الأرض: أي كثرت جبأتها، وفي الصحاح: أي كثرت كمأتها، وهي أرض مجبأة.

And I made the land abundant: meaning its truffles became numerous, and in Al-Sihah: meaning its truffles became numerous, and it is a land with many truffles.

الجبأة هي التي إلى الحمرة، والكمأة هي التي إلى الغبرة والسواد؛ والفقعة: البيض، وبنات أوبر: الصغار.

Al-jab'ah is that which is reddish, and al-kam'ah is that which is dusty and black; and al-faq'ah: the white ones, and banāt ūbar: the small ones.

من الكمأة الجبأة؛ قال أبو زيد: هي الحمر منها؛ واحدها جبء، وثلاثة أجبؤ.

Among the truffles are al-jab'ah; Abu Zayd said: they are the red ones among them; their singular is 'jab'', and three are 'ajbu'.

والجبء: نقرة في الجبل يجتمع فيها الماء، عن أبي العميثل الأعرابي؛ وفي التهذيب: الجبء حفرة يستنقع فيها الماء.

And al-jab'u: a hollow in the mountain where water collects, from Abu Al-Umaythil Al-Arabi; and in Al-Tahdhib: al-jab'u is a pit where water pools.

والجبأة مثل الجبهة: الفرزوم، وهي خشبة الحذاء التي يحذو عليها.

And al-jab'ah, like al-jabhah: the shoemaker's last, which is the wooden block on which he shapes the shoe.

في مرفقيه تقارب، وله ... بركة زور، كجبأة الخزم

And al-ijbā': selling the crop before its suitability appears, or it ripens, you say from it: I sold the crop unripe. And it came in the hadith, without hamza: whoever sells unripe crops is engaging in usury, and its origin is with hamza.

وامرأة جبأى: قائمة الثديين.

And a woman 'jabā': with prominent breasts.

سمي الجراد الجابئ لطلوعه؛ يقال: جبأ علينا فلان أي طلع، والجابئ: الجراد، يهمز ولا يهمز.

Locusts are named 'al-jābi'' due to their emergence; it is said: so-and-so emerged upon us, meaning he appeared, and 'al-jābi'': the locust, with hamza and without hamza.

وجبأ الجراد: هجم على البلد؛ قال الهذلي:

And the locusts emerged: they attacked the town; Al-Hudhali said:

صابوا بستة أبيات وأربعة، ... حتى كأن عليهم جابئا لبدا

They struck six houses and four... until it was as if a dense locust swarm was upon them.

وكل طالع فجأة: جابئ، وسنذكره في المعتل أيضا.

And everything that emerges suddenly: is 'jābi'', and we will mention it in the defective verbs as well.

جأبة البطن وجبأته: مأنته.

The 'ja'bah' of the stomach and its 'jab'atuh': its lining.

والجبأ: السهم الذي يوضع أسفله كالجوزة في موضع النصل؛

And al-jab'u: the arrow on which is placed below like a nut in the place of the arrowhead.

والجبأ: طرف قرن الثور، عن كراع؛ قال ابن سيده: ولا أدري ما صحتها.

And al-jab'u: the tip of a bull's horn, from Kurā'; Ibn Sidah said: and I do not know its authenticity.
