1 وَشَى ذ , inf. n. وَشْىٌ, He variegated, or figured, a piece of cloth, or a garment; (Mgh, Msb, * K;) and embellished it. (K.) ― -b2- وَشَى بِهِ اـِلَى السُّلْطَانِ, (S, K,) or عِنْدَ السُّلْطَانِ, (Msb,) He calumniated, or misrepresented, him to the Sultán. (S, Msb, K.)

شِيَةٌ ذ Any colour differing from the main colour of a horse, &c.; a colour differing from the rest, (S,) or from that which generally pervades a thing. ― -b2- لَا شِيَةَ فِيهِ It is of one generally pervading colour, in which is no other colour. ― -b3- شِيَةٌ [also] A mark, sign, symptom, or token, by which a thing is known; syn. عَلَامَةٌ; (Msb;) and مَخِيلَةٌ, which see.

وَشْىٌ ذ , originally an inf. n., A kind of variegated, or figured, cloth, or garment. (Mgh, Msb. *) ― -b2- وَشْىٌ The variegation, figured work, or figuring, of a garment; making it partycoloured. ― -b3- وَشى sometimes signifies A natural diversity of colours: see رُمْلَةٌ. ― -b4- وَشْىٌ of a sword: see فِرِنْدٌ.

شِيَوِىٌّ ذ : see what next follows.

وَشَوِىٌّ ذ rel. n. of شِيَةٌ, the rad. و being restored; (S in the present art.;) and so ↓ شِيَوِىٌّ, like عِدَوِىٌّ [of عِدَةٌ]. (S in art. وعد.)

قَوْلٌ مَوْشِىٌّ بِهِ ذ [ A saying misrepresented ]. (TA in art. قت, in an explanation of قَوْلٌ مَقْتُوتٌ.) ― -b2- مَوْشِىٌّ is used by Aboo-Dhu-eyb to signify A musical reed-pipe. (TA, art. نوب.)

1 وَصُفَ ذ He attained to the proper age for service. (K.) See an ex. in the K, voce مُخَلَّدُونَ.

4 أَوْصَفَ ذ and ↓ اِسْتَوْصَفَ He (a boy) became of full stature, and fit for service. (Mgh.)

8 اِتَّصَفَ بِالعِلْمِ ذ [ He was, or became, characterized, or he characterized himself, by knowledge, or science ]. (Msb in art. أَهْلٌ.)

صِفَةٌ ذ A quality; an attribute; a property; or a description, as meaning the aggregate of the qualities or attributes or properties of a thing; or the state, condition, or case, of a thing. So explained voce صِنْفٌ, and voce صُورَةٌ. See its syn. حَالٌ. ― -b2- صِفَةٌ in grammar, The same as نَعْتٌ, An epithet. (K.) ― -b3- A word denoting an attribute (مَعْنًى) and a substance (ذَات). Under this term are comprised the اسم فاعل, the اسم مفعول, the صفة مشبّهة, and the افعل التفضيل. (I'Ak, sect. الصفة المشبّهة باسم الفاعل.) ― -b4- صِقَةٌ مُشَبَّهَةٌ [ A simple epithet ]; an epithet resembling an اسم فاعل. ― -b5- صِفَةٌ غَالِبَةٌ An epithet in which the substantive character predominates. ― -b6- صِفَةٌ, as a general term for an attributive word, is also applied by Lth and other old writers to An adverbial n. of place or time, and to a preposition. It is so applied in the L and TA, art. عنل, &c. It was applied to the former by Fr, (T, voce ظَرْفٌ,) and to the latter also. (L, TA, ubi supra.)

1 وَصَلَهُ ذ , and وَصَلَ اـِلَيْهِ, He, or it, arrived at, came to, reached, attained, him, or it; (S, K, &c.;) as also اـِلَيْهِ ↓ تَوَصَّل. (M.) ― -b2- وَصَلَ رَحِمَهُ He made close his ties of relationship by behaving with goodness and affection, &c., to kindred: see صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ. ― -b3- وَصَلَهُ and ↓ وَاصَلَهُ He had, or held, close, or loving, communion, commerce, or intercourse, with him. (Msb, K.) ― -b4- وَصَلَهُ, inf. n. وَصْلٌ and صلَةٌ; and ↓ وَاصَلَهُ, inf. n. مُوَاصَلَةٌ and وِصَالٌ; are said with relation to love, whether chaste or unchaste. (M, K.) ― -b5- And وَصَلَ حَبْلَهُ, inf. n. وَصْلٌ and صِلَةٌ; and حَبْلَهُ ↓ وَاصَلَ: [ He made close his bond of love, by affectionate conduct ]. (M.) ― -b6- وَصَلَهُ He gave him property. (TA.) And وَصَلَهُ بِجَائِزَةٍ [ He gave him a gift ]. (K in art. حذف.) ― -b7- وَصَلَ He connected, or conjoined, a word with a following word, not pausing after the former; he made no interruption.

2 وَصَّلَهُ ذ , inf. n. تَوْصِيلٌ, He joined, or connected, much: he made a string to have many joinings. (TA: the latter from an explanation of the pass. part. n.) ― -b2- وَصَّلَهُ اـِلَيْهِ He made it to reach it, or him: syn. أَنْهَاهُ اـِلَيْهِ, and أَبْلَفَهُ اـِيَّاه; like اـِلَيْهِ ↓ أَوْصَلَهُ [q. v.]. (TA.) See an ex. voce غفَلَ.

3 وَاْصَلَ See 1. ― -b2- وَاصَلَ الصِّيَامَ, inf. n. مُوَاصَلَةٌ and وِصَالٌ, He continued the fasting uninterruptedly. (TA.) ― -b3- وَاصَلَ: see وَاتَرَ. ― -b4- وَاصَلَ المَرْأَةَ He held communion, or commerce, of love with the woman. ― -b5- وَاصَلَا Contr. of قَاطَعَا. (K in art. قطع.)

4 أَوْصَلَهُ ذ He made, or caused, him, or it, to reach; he caused to come, brought, conveyed, or delivered, him, or it; (S, * M, K, *) اـِلَيْهِ to him, or it; as also ↓ وَصَّلَهُ. (M.) See أَدَّاهُ.

5 توصّل اـِلَيْهِ ذ He applied himself with gentleness, or courtesy, to obtain access, or nearness, to him. (S.) See 1.

8 اِتَّصَلَ بِهِ ذ It communicated with it. (Modern usage.)

وَصْلٌ ذ Union [of companions or friends or lovers]; contr. of فِرَاقٌ (T, S, voce بَيْنٌ) or of فُرْقَةٌ (Msb, ibid.) or of فَصْلٌ (Bd in vi. 94) or of هِجْرَانٌ. (S.) ― -b2- فِى الوَصْلِ وَالوَقْفِ In the case of connexion with a following word and in the case of a pause.

وِصْلٌ ذ and ↓ وُصْلٌ A limb: see فَخِذٌ and فَعْمٌ; and see also Har, p. 346. Between every فَصْلَانِ [or rather between every فَصْل and the فَصْل next to it] is a وِصْل. (O, K, in art. فصل.)

وُصْلٌ ذ : see وِصْلٌ.

صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ ذ (tropical:) The [ making close one's ties of relationship by ] behaving with kindness, or goodness and affection and gentleness, and considerateness, or regard for their circumstances, to kindred, or relations, even though remote, or evil-doers: and قَطْعُ الرَّحِمِ signifies the contr. (IAth, TA.) ― -b2- صِلَةٌ A gift for which no compensation is to be made; a free gift; a gratuity; like هِبَةٌ and صَدَقَةٌ. (Marg. note in a copy of the KT.) ― -b3- صِلَةٌ The connexion of a verb with the objective complement, whether immediate or by means of a preposition. ― -b4- صِلَةٌ The complement of a مَوْصُول [or conjunct ], (I have thus rendered it voce أَلْ,) whether the latter be a particle or a noun. (I' Ak, sect. المَوْصُولُ.) ― -b5- [The term صِلَةٌ is also applied in the Msb, art. أذن, to لَهُ in the phrase مَأْذُونٌ لَهُ.] Often applied to the connective prep. by which a verb or act. part. n. is transitive, together with the noun or pronoun governed by it; as to لَهُ in أَذَنَ لَهُ: and that prep. alone is called حَرْفُ الصِّلَةِ. Also, to a prep. by which a pass. verb or part. n. is connected with its subject, together with that subject; as لَهُ in أُذِنَ لَهُ. In this case it is an inf. n. in the sense of a pass. part. n., namely, of مَوْصُولٌ. (IbrD.) ― -b6- [صِلَةٌ A connective word or phrase: as يَكَدْ is said to be in the phrase لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَاهَا: see art. كود. In this case it is an inf. n. used in the sense of an act. part. n.] It is used in this sense especially with reference to cases in the Kur-án. (MF, art. كود.)

وُصْلَةٌ ذ : see عُلْقَةٌ: A means of connexion, or attachment: see ذَرِيعَةٌ.

مَوْصِلٌ ذ A joint, or place of juncture.

مَوْصُولٌ ذ , in grammar, [ A conjunct ]. This is of two kinds; مَوْصُولٌ حَرْفِىٌّ and مَوْصُولٌ اـِسْمِىٌّ. The former term [or conjunct particle ] is applied to the infinitive particles أَنْ, أَنَّ, كَى, لَوْ, and مَا. The latter term [or conjunct noun ] (I have thus rendered it voce أَلْ, and voce اـِنْ, and voce اـِنَّ) is applied to the conjunctive nouns أَلَّذِى, and its fem. اَلَّتِى, and مَنْ, and مَا, and ذُو in the dial. of Teiyi, and to اَلْ, which last some incorrectly hold to be a conjunct particle, and others assert to be a determinative particle and not a conjunct, and to ذَا after the interrogative مَا or مَنْ. (I' Ak, sect. المَوْصُولُ.)

اـِسْتِثْنَاآءٌ مُتَّصِلٌ ذ An exception in which the thing excepted is united in kind to that from which the exception is made; contr. of مُنْقَطِعٌ.

2 وَصَّاهُ ذ and ↓ أَوْصَاهُ He enjoined him; charged him; bade him; ordered him: (K, &c.:) he commanded him, بِكَذَا, to do such a thing. (Msb.)

4 أَوْصَى لَهُ بِالثُّلُثِ ذ He bequeathed to him the third of the property. (MA.) ― -b2- أَوْصَى He made his will. ― -b3- See 2.

6 تَوَاصَوْا ذ They enjoined, charged, bade, ordered, or commanded, one another. See an ex. voce تَبَاعَثُوا.

وَصِىٌّ ذ A person commissioned; a commissioned agent: (K:) an executor appointed by a will.

وَصِيَّةٌ ذ An injunction, a charge, bidding, order, or command: (K:) an admonition, with an endeavour to persuade: and a command: its place may be supplied by any word in which is the meaning of أَمْرٌ. (Msb.) ― -b2- And A will, or testament. (K, * TA.)

1 وَضَعَهُ ذ He put it, or laid it, (KL, * PS,) in, or on, a place: (PS:) he put it, or threw it, down from his hand: (TA:) contr. of رَفَعَه: (Mgh:) syn. حَطَّهُ: (K, * TA, in art. حط:) but it has a more general sense than this last. (Er-Rághib, Kull.) ― -b2- وَضَعَ He put down a thing: contr. of رَفَعَ. (K, voce نَصَبَ.) ― -b3- وَضَعَتْ She brought forth. ― -b4- وَضَعَ لَهُ He appointed to him, or for him, a sign, or token, &c.: see Msb in art. علم. ― -b5- وَضَعَ عَلَيْهِ He imposed upon him a fine, or tax, &c. ― -b6- وَضَعَ He remitted a tax or the like; did not exact it. (Mgh, Msb, in art. جوح.) ― -b7- وَضَعُوا الحَرْبَ (assumed tropical:) [ They gave over, or relinquished, war; ] they made peace; opposed to رَفَعُوهَا. (Ham, pp. 179 and 180.) ― -b8- وَضَعَ مِنْهُ, (S,) or عَنْهُ, (K,) He lowered his grade, rank, condition, (S, K,) or estimation. (K.) ― -b9- وُضِعَ فِى تِجَارَتِهِ He lost, or suffered loss or diminution, in his traffic; (S, Mgh, Msb, K;) did not gain in it; (Mgh;) as also ↓ أُوْضِعَ. (Mgh.) ― -b10- وَضَعَ He forged (a word:) he forged (poetry, على in the name of). (Mz, 8th نوع.) ― -b11- وَضَعَ لَفْظًا لِشَىْءٍ He applied or assigned or appropriated a word, or phrase, to denote, or signify, a thing. (Kull, 371, &c.) See also اـِزَاآء. ― -b12- وَضَعْتُ عَلَيْهِ الشَّىْءَ app. signifies I made the thing according to his, or its, measare. See قَدَرْتُ.

2 فِى فُلَانٍ تَوْضِيعٌ ذ : see طُرْقَةٌ.

4 أَوْضَعَ See 1. ― -b2- مِنْ أَيْنَ أَوْضَعَ الرَّاكِبُ i. q. من اين أَوْضَحَ. (T, in L, art. وضح.)

6 تَوَاضَعَ ذ He was, or became, lowly, humble, submissive, or in a state of abasement: (Msb:) or he lowered, humbled, or abased, himself. (S, K.) ― -b2- تَوَاضَعَا الرُّهُونَ They two laid bets, wagers, or stakes, each with the other; syn. تَرَاهَنَا. (TA, art. رهن.) ― -b3- تَوَاضَعَتِ الأَرْضُ (tropical:) The land was lower than that which was next to it. (TA.)

8 اِتَّضَعَتْ أَرْكَانُهُ ذ : see R. Q. 2 in art. ضع.

وَضْعٌ ذ , as one of the ten predicaments, or categories, Collocation, or posture. ― -b2- Also The constitution of a thing; its conformation; its make. And i. q. قَنٌّ, meaning A mode, or manner, &c.

ضَِعَةٌ ذ perhaps an inf. n. of وَضَعَتْ, meaning “ she brought forth: ” see 1, third sentence, in art. قرأ.

وَضِيعٌ ذ Low, ignoble, vile, or mean; of no rank, or estimation. (Msb.)

هُوَ مَوْضِعُ سِرِّى ذ He is the depository of my secret, or secrets. ― -b2- مَوْضِعُهُ الرَّفْعُ Same as مَحَلُّهُ الرفع ― -b3- مَوْضِعٌ The proper application, or meaning, of a word. (Bd, iv. 48 and v. 45.) See 1 in art. حرف. And The case in which a word is to be used: see S, art. on the particle فَ. ― -b4- And The proper place of a thing. ― -b5- Ground; as when one says, “ a ground for, or of, belief, trust, accusation, ” &c. And The proper object of an action, &c.: as in the phrase فُلَانٌ مَوْضِعٌ لِلْاـِكْرَامِ Such a one is a proper object of honouring.

مَوْضُوعٌ ذ A certain pace of a beast; contr. of مَرْفُوعٌ. (S in art. رفع.) ― -b2- مَوْضُوعٌ as an inf. n., signifying a certain manner of going of a beast: see رَفَعَ البَعِيرُ. ― -b3- مَوْضُوعٌ, in logic, (assumed tropical:) A subject, as opposed to a predicate: and (assumed tropical:) a substance, as opposed to an accident: in each sense, contr. of مَحْمُولٌ. ― -b4- (assumed tropical:) The subject of a book or the like. ― -b5- See مَصْنُوعٌ. ― -b6- أَصْوَاتٌ مَصُوغَةٌ مَوُضُوعَةٌ: see art. صوغ.

مُوَاضَعَة ذ [when used as a conv. term in lexicology] i. q. اـِصْطِلَاحٌ [when so used]. (Mz, 1st نوع.)

أَكَمَةٌ مُتَوَاضِعَةٌ ذ [(assumed tropical:) A low hill ]. (S in art. خشع.)

4 أَوْضَفَ النَّاقَةَ ذ He made the she-camel to go the pace termed خَبَب; like أَوْفَضَهَا. (Khaleefeh El-Hoseynee, in TA, art. وفض.)

وَضِينٌ ذ A girth (بِطَان) wide, woven of thongs or hair, or only of skin; (M, K;) said to be adapted for the رَحْل and the هَوْدَج; the بِطَان being peculiarly for the قَتَب: (M:) or it is for the هَوْدَج, like the بِطَان for the قَتَب and the تَصْدِير for the رَحْل and the حِزَام for the سَرْج; and both [but to what this refers is doubtful] are like the نِسْع, except that they are of thongs woven one upon another, doubly or more. (S.)

مِيضَنَةٌ ذ i. q. قُفَّةٌ i. e. مَرْجُونَةٌ. (TA in art. ضون.)

2 وَطَّنَ نَفْسَهُ عَلَى الأَمْرِ ذ He disposed and subjected his mind, or himself, to do the thing; syn. مَهَّدَهَا لِفِعْلِهِ وَذَلَّلَهَا (Msb.) ― -b2- وظّن نفسه على الشَّىْءِ, and لَهُ, He induced, or persuaded, himself to do the thing; syn. حَمَلَهَا عَلَيْهِ. (ISd, in TA.) See also 5 and 10.

5 تَوَطَّنَتْ نَفْسُهُ عَلَى الشَّىْءِ ذ , and لَهُ, He undertook the thing, and submitted to it; syn. تَحَمَّلَتْ وَذَلَّتْ لَهُ (ISd, in TA) [see also 2 and 10] his mind, or he, became disposed and subjected to do the thing; syn. تَمَهَّدَتْ. (K [in the CK, for تَوَطُّنَهَا تَمَهُّدَهَا, is put تَوَطَّنَهَا تَمَهَّدَهَا].)
