لَوٌّ ذ The word لَوْ: see a prov. cited voce ذَنَبٌ (near the end of the paragraph). And see سَوْفَ.

لَوْ أَنَّ ذ [ If ]. Ex. لَوْ أَنَّكَ قَائِمٌ لَقُمْتُ [ Hadst thou been standing, I had stood ]. (K, art. ان.) See Kur, xxxix. 58; &c.

لَوْلَا ذ and لَوْمَا: see حَضَّهُ. ― -b2- لَوْلَا فَعَلْتُ كَذَا means Wherefore didst not thou such a thing? and لَوْلَا تَفْعَلُ كَذَا means Wherefore wilt not thou do such a thing? and in like manner, لَوْمَا and ألَّا and هَلَّا. See an ex. in the Kur, x. 98, explained in art. اـِلَّا. ― -b3- لَوْلَا هٰذَا لَكَانَ ذَاكَ Had not this been, or but for this, that had been, or would have been. ― -b4- لَوْلَا is followed by a noun in the nom. case (as in the Kur, viii. 69), or by a verb, as in exs. above.

لَاتَ ذ : see أَلَتَ.

مُلَوَّصٌ ذ The sweet food called فالوذ: see مُزَعْفَرٌ.

لَوْعَةٌ ذ Ardour of love: see حُبٌّ.

1 مَا عَاقَتْ وَلَا لَافَتْ ذ : see 1 in art. عوق.

لَوِقٌ ذ and لَيِّقٌ: see عَوِقٌ and عَيِّقٌ.

1 لَاكَ ذ He chewed a morsel: (S, K, Msb:) or chewed in the gentlest manner: or chewed something hard; (K;) rolling it about, or turning it round, in his mouth: (TA:) [ he (a child) mumbled, or bit softly, his finger]: (S, art. مرث:) he (a horse) champed, (Msb,) or chewed, the bit. (Lth in TA, art. الك.)

4 أَلِكْنِى اـِلَيْهِ ذ ; and أَلَكْتُهُ; as though from أَلَاكَهُ: see art. الك.

5 مَا تَلَوَّكْتُ بِأَلُوكٍ ذ : see أَلُوكْ.

1 لَامَ ذ , inf. n. لَوْمٌ, He blamed, censured, or reprehended, syn. عَذَلَ, (S, M, Msb, K,) a person, (S, Msb,) عَلَى كَذَا [for such a thing]. (S.)

4 أَلَامَ ذ He did a thing for which he should be blamed. (S in art. جنف, and L and TA in art. ريب.)

5 تَلَوَّمَ ذ i. q. تَكَلَّفَ اللَّوْمَ. (Ham, p. 356.)

لَائِمَةٌ ذ A thing for which the doer is blamed. (TA.)

2 لَوَّنَ ذ i. q. ↓ تَلَوَّنَ It became coloured. (M.) ― -b2- It (a palm-tree) had dates which had become coloured. (T.) ― -b3- لَوَّنَ فِى الكَلَامِ [ He varied in speech ]. (Sgh, K, voce تَمَطَّطَ.)

5 تَلَوَّنَ ذ It became coloured. (MA, KL.) See 1. ― -b2- It became variegated, or diversified in colour. ― -b3- And hence, (see تغّول,) It varied in state, or condition; it was, or became, variable therein. He assumed various forms, or appearances. ― -b4- تَلَوَّنَ فُلَانٌ Such a one varied in disposition. (Msb.)

لَوْنٌ ذ Colour: (S, Msb, K:) distinctive quality or property: (M, K:) sort, or species: (S, K:) mood, disposition, or character.

أَلْوَانُ الأَطْعِمَةِ ذ [ Sorts, or species, of viands ]. (S in art. بأج.)

مُتَلَوِّنٌ ذ Varying, or variable, in dispositions. ― -b2- Unsteady in disposition. (K.)

1 لَوَى عَلَيْهِ ذ He waited for him. (Msb.) ― -b2- مَرَّ لَا يَلْوِى عَلَى أَحَدٍ He went along, not pausing nor waiting for any one. (Msb.) See the Kur-án, iii. 147. ― -b3- لَوَاهُ بِدَيْنِهِ i. q. مَطَلَهُ. (S, Msb, K.) ― -b4- لَوَى He twisted a thing; turned or wreathed it round or about: contorted it: wound it: curled it: curved it: or bent it. (K, &c.) And He, or it, turned him from his course; made him to deviate, or swerve. ― -b5- لَوَى عَلَيْهِ He went round it, or round about it. (Bd, in liii. 20.) ― -b6- لَوَى عَلَيْهِ أَمْرَهُ [ He mode his case, or affair, difficult and intricate to him: see اـِلْتَوّى عَلَيْهِ]. (S, K, art. عوص.) ― -b7- لَوَى خَبَرَهُ, (assumed tropical:) He concealed his information. (T, TA.) And لَوَى أَمْرَهُ عِنِّى (tropical:) He concealed his affair from me. (K, TA.)

4 أَلْوَى بِالكَلَامِ ذ He distorted, wrested, or wrung, the language. (M, K.) [Hence, perhaps, فُلَانٌ يُلْوِى بِخَصْمِهِ, if the verb be correctly thus: see عُقْمِىَ, last sentence.]

5 تَلَوَّى ألوى لوى لوي تلو تلوى تلوي It twisted, or coiled, itself: (KL:) it became twisted, or coiled: one says, تَلَوَّتِ الحَيَّةُ. (MA.) ― -b2- تَلَوَّى مِنْ وَجَعِ الضَّرْبِ [ He writhed by reason of the pain of beating ]. (M, A, K, art. ضور.)

6 يَتَلاَوَيَانِ ذ said of two serpents [ They twist together ]: see عَقاَمٌ, last sentence.

8 اِلْتَوَى ذ , neuter verb, It twisted: wound: bent. (K, &c.) ― -b2- اِلْتَوَى عَلَيْهِ It (an affair) became difficult; or difficult and intricate. (TA.) ― -b3- الْتَوَتْ عَلَىَّ حَاجَتِى My want became difficult of attainment. (TA.) ― -b4- التوى عَلَيْهِ also He acted, or behaved, perversely towards him.

لِوَاآءٌ ذ A banner, or standard, syn. عَلَمٌ, (M, Mgh, K,) of a commander, (T,) or of an army, less than the رَايَة, being a strip of cloth, twisted, or wound, and tied to a spear-shaft. (Mgh.) See رِفَادَةٌ. Respecting the لِوَاآء of the Kaabeh, see سَدَنَ and فَادَةٌ.

سَوَّاآءٌ لَوَّاآءٌ ذ : see art. سوى.

اللَّوَا ذ occurs in poetry for اللَّوَاتِى. (TA in art. شرف.)

أَلْوَى ذ Very contentious. (K.) See an ex. voce مُسْتَمَرّ.

أَلَيْسَ ذ : see the latter part of art. أَلَا.

1 لَاغَ ذ , aor. يَلَاغُ, inf. n. لَيَغٌ: see an ex. in a verse cited voce تَزَنَّدَ.

لِيفٌ ذ [The membranous fibres that grow at the base of the branches of the palm-tree: ] the best sort is the ليف of the cocoa-nut. (TA.) See شَرِيعٌ. ― -b2- لِيفٌ is used by Ibn-Mukbil as meaning (assumed tropical:) A she-camel's tail. (TA in arts. شذب and شمل.)

1 مَا يَلِيقُ بِهِ ذ It is not suitable to him, does not befit him, that he should do such a thing. (Msb.)

لَيْكَا ذ , [i. e. لَيْكَ with an adjunct alif for the sake of the rhyme,] for اـِلَيْكَ: see art. اـِلَى, near the end.

لَيْلٌ ذ : see نَهَارٌ. ― -b2- بَنَاتُ اللَّيْلِ Wishes: (T, TA in art. بنى:) and anxieties. (TA ibid.) ― -b3- اِبْنُ اللَّيْلِ The thief, or robber: (T in art. بنى:) and the wayfarer, or traveller. (Er-Rághib in TA in that art.) ― -b4- أَخُو اللَّيْلِ A nightfarer: see a verse cited voce عَدَسَ.

لَيْلَةٌ ذ A night-journey, or night's journey. ― -b2- رَأَيْتُ اللَّيْلَةَ فِى مَنَامِى; and كَانَ كَذَا وَكَذَا اللَّيْلَةَ; and مَا أَشْبَهَ اللَّيْلَةَ بِالبَارِحَهْ: see above, p. 183 a.

أُمُّ لَيْلَى ذ Wine: لَيْلَى signifying النَّشْوَةُ. (T in art. ام.)

لَيْلِىٌّ ذ : see نَهِرٌ.

لَيَالٍ ذ is pl. of لَيْلَاةٌ. (TA, voce أَرْضٌ.)

مُلَايَلَةٌ ذ from اللَّيْلُ is like مُياَوَمَةٌ from اليَوْمُ, and مُشَاهَرَةٌ from الشَّهْرُ, &c. (TA in art. ربع.)

1 لَانَ ذ , inf. n. لِينٌ [not لَيْنٌ as in the CK] and لَياَنٌ, (T, S, M, K,) contr. of خَشُنَ; (S, K in art. خشن, and TK;) It was, or became, soft, as opposed to rough or harsh; smooth; plain; without asperities; fine to the touch; delicate; tender; supple; lithe; limber; pliant; pliable; flexible; ductile; malleable; soft, or flabby; lax: and he was, or became, soft; tender; pliant; gentle; bland; or mild. Hence لان جَانِبُهُ: see لَيِّنٌ. ― -b2- لَانَ بَطْنُهُ His bowels became relaxed. ― -b3- لَانَ He relented.

3 لَايَنَهُ بِالقَوْلِ ذ He soothed, coaxed, or wheedled, him with words. (L, art. مسح.) ― -b2- لَايَنَهُ [ He acted gently towards him; (M, K;) treated him with gentleness, or blandishment; soothed him; coaxed him; wheedled him; ] i. q. دَارَاهُ. (S, M, Msb, voce داراه.) ― -b3- لَايَنَهُ He was soft, tender, gentle, bland, or mild, towards him. (M, K.)

4 أَلَانَ بَطْنَهُ ذ [ It relaxed his bowels ]; said of medicine. (K in art. سهل.)

10 اِسْتَلَانَ ذ : see its contr. استخشن.

لَانَ ذ for الْاآنَ: see the latter in art. اين.

لِينُ العَيْشِ ذ Softness, delicateness, or easiness, of life.

لِينَةٌ ذ applied to a palm-tree: see art. لون; and see عَجْوَةٌ.

عَيْشٌ لَيِّنٌ ذ Soft, delicate, or easy, life. ― -b2- لَيِّنُ الجَانِبِ: see جَانِبٌ. ― -b3- لَيِّنُ الأَعْطَافِ; &c.: see art. عطف.

مُلَيِّنٌ ذ A lenitive, or laxative, medicine.

لَاهِ أَنْتَ ذ : and الحَمْدُ لَاهِ: and لاَهُمَّ: see اللّٰهُ, and art. ليه in the S; and see an ex. of لَاهُمَّ voce شَادِخَةٌ.
