Root entry · 1 derived lemmaسَخْلَةٌ ذ A lamb, or kid, in whatever state it be; (K;) male or female: (TA:) or a lamb, or kid, when just born; male or female: (S, M, O, Msb, K:) or, accord. to some, peculiarly applied to a lamb; and this is affirmed by 'Iyád and Er-Ráfi'ee: accord. to some, peculiarly to a kid; and so affirms IAth: (TA:) [see also بَهْمٌ, in three places:] pl. ↓ سَخْلٌ, (S, O, Msb, K,) [or rather this is a coll. gen. n.] like as تَمْرٌ is of تَمْرَةٌ, (Msb,) [and is app. also used as a sing., (see the next preceding paragraph,)] and [the pl. properly so termed is] سِخَالٌ (S, O, Msb, K) and سِخَلَةٌ, which is extr. [as a pl. form, so much so that Sb holds it to be a quasi-pl. measure, not a broken pl. measure, as is said in the TA voce جِبَأَةٌ]. (K.)
