وَرَأَيْتُ السَّفِينَةَ تَخْتَفِي عَنْ نَاظِرِي، وَقَدْ أَصْبَحْتُ تَحْتَ رَحْمَةِ الْأَمْوَاجِ الْهَائِجَةِ، وَالْغَرَقُ يُهَدِّدُنِي فِي كُلِّ لَحْظَةٍ.

I watched the ship vanish from sight, left at the mercy of the raging waves, with the threat of drowning looming every second.

وَلَمَّا أَظْلَمَ اللَّيْلُ أَيْقَنْتُ بِالْهَلَاكِ، وَلَكِنَّنِي لَمْ أَيْأَسْ رَغْمَ مَا حَلَّ مِنَ التَّعَبِ وَالْخَوْفِ، وَبَقِيتُ عَلَى هَذِهِ الْحَالِ طُولَ اللَّيْلِ.

As night fell, I felt certain my end had come. Yet, despite the exhaustion and terror, I refused to give up, clinging to that resolve until dawn.

حَتَّى إِذَا أَصْبَحَ الصَّبَاحُ قَذَفَتْنِي الْأَمْوَاجُ إِلَى شَاطِئِ جَزِيرَةٍ عَالِيَةٍ فِيهَا أَشْجَارٌ مُطِلَّةٌ عَلَى الْبَحْرِ.

When morning broke, the waves tossed me onto the shore of a high island, where trees leaned out over the sea.

وَقَدْ وَجَدْتُ - لِحُسْنِ حَظِّي - فَرْعَ شَجَرَةٍ مُتَدَلِّيًا، فَتَعَلَّقْتُ بِهِ وَتَمَكَّنْتُ بِذَلِكَ مِنَ الصُّعُودِ إِلَى الْجَزِيرَةِ بَعْدَ تَعَبٍ شَدِيدٍ.

By some stroke of luck, I spotted a low-hanging branch. I grabbed hold of it and, after a grueling struggle, managed to pull myself onto the island.

وَلَمْ أَكَدْ أَصْعَدُ إِلَيْهَا حَتَّى ارْتَمَيْتُ عَلَى أَرْضِهَا - وَأَنَا مَنْهُولُ الْقُوَى مِنْ شِدَّةِ مَا لَقِيتُ - وَبَقِيتُ نَائِمًا طُولَ النَّهَارِ وَاللَّيْلِ.

No sooner had I reached the shore than I collapsed, utterly spent from my ordeal, and fell into a deep sleep that lasted all day and night.

ثُمَّ أَفَقْتُ مِنْ نَوْمِي فِي صَبَاحِ الْيَوْمِ التَّالِي، وَكَانَتْ قَدَمَايَ قَدْ وَرِمَتَا وَلَكِنَّنِي لَمْ أَعْبَأْ بِذَلِكَ.

I awoke the next morning to find my feet swollen, but I paid it no mind.

فَمَشَيْتُ مُتَوَكِّئًا عَلَى عَصًا قَطَعْتُهَا مِنْ غُصْنِ شَجَرَةٍ، وَسِرْتُ أَبْحَثُ عَنْ طَعَامٍ آكُلُهُ وَقَدْ كَادَ يُهْلِكُنِي الْجُوعُ.

Using a branch I had fashioned into a staff, I hobbled off in search of food, desperate with hunger.
