- Messenger of Allah, rather he said: 'Supplicate to Allah to grant us rain.' So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, raised his hands and said: 'O Allah, grant us rain,' three times. Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, created a cloud and it rained, and they did not see the sun for a full week while the rain poured down. On the following Friday, a man—or the same man—entered and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the wealth has drowned and the buildings have collapsed, so supplicate to Allah, Exalted be He, to hold it back from us.' The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, supplicated to his Lord and said: 'O Allah, around us and not upon us; O Allah, upon the hills, the small mountains, the valleys, and the places where trees grow.' Then the sky cleared, and the Companions went out walking in the sun.
- This is a request for supplication from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, to Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, and it is not a supplication to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family, nor is it seeking aid from him. By this, it is known that this misconception with which these people have confused others is a misconception that does not benefit them; rather, it is a refuted argument before Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He.
- Then the author, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned that there is no harm in coming to a righteous man whom you know and whose righteousness you recognize, and asking him to supplicate to Allah for you. This is true, but a person should not make that a habit, such that whenever he sees a righteous man, he says, 'Supplicate to Allah for me,' for this was not the custom of the Salaf, may Allah be pleased with them, and it involves reliance on the supplication of others. It is known that when a person supplicates to his Lord himself, it is better for him because he is performing an act of worship by which he draws closer to Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, for supplication is an act of worship, as Allah, Exalted be He, said: 'Call upon Me; I will answer you.' When a person supplicates to his Lord himself, he attains the reward of worship and then relies upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He, for the attainment of benefit and the warding off of harm, unlike when he asks someone else to supplicate to Allah for him, for then he relies on that other person, and perhaps his attachment to this other person becomes greater than his attachment [to Allah].
