[Definition of Simile].
Meaning, this is the chapter on the technical simile upon which metaphor is built; 'simile' here means absolute simile.
The definite article 'al' in 'al-tashbih' is for reference, and it refers to the linguistic simile.
Simile, etc. The detail is that a word is either used in its literal meaning or not; if it is used in it, it is literal (haqiqah), and if it is not used in it, but rather used in a meaning other than the one it was coined for, then it must either have a context (qarinah) present in the speech indicating that the literal meaning is not intended, in which case it is a metaphor (majaz), and it must have a relationship and connection between the literal and metaphorical meaning, such as simile and others, like 'I saw a lion speaking,' where 'speaking' is the context indicating that the literal meaning of the lion—the predatory animal—is not intended; or there is no such context, in which case it is a metonymy (kinayah), such as 'long of sword-belt,' for it is permissible to intend the literal meaning along with its implication, namely 'tall of stature'.
Furthermore, metaphor may be divided such that if the justifying relationship is other than simile, such as causality, state, or other relationships, it is an unrestricted metaphor (majaz mursal), otherwise it is a borrowed metaphor (isti'arah); and the borrowed metaphor may be divided, considering its pillars (the simile), properties, and accompaniments, into categories, among which is the explicit metaphor (isti'arah musarrahah), also called a true metaphor, which is the likening of one thing to another in the mind such that none of the pillars of the simile are mentioned except the object of comparison (musabbah bihi), such as: 'I saw a lion speaking,' for he likened the brave man to a lion in the mind, and nothing was mentioned in the speech except the lion, which is the object of comparison.
Among them is the metaphor by metonymy (isti'arah bil-kinayah), also called a veiled metaphor, which is the likening of one thing to another in the mind, where none of the pillars of the simile are mentioned except the subject of comparison (musabbah), as in the saying of the Hudhayli poet: 'And when death sinks its claws, you will find that every amulet is of no avail.'
For he likened death to a beast of prey, and nothing was mentioned in the speech except the subject of comparison, namely 'death'; among them is the imaginative metaphor (isti'arah takhyiliyyah), which is the attribution of what is specific to the object of comparison to the subject of comparison, as in the aforementioned saying of the Hudhayli poet, for he attributed claws, which are specific to the beast of prey, to death; and among them is the reinforcing metaphor (isti'arah tarshihiyyah), which is the mention of an accompaniment of the object of comparison in the speech, as in the aforementioned example from the saying of the Hudhayli poet, for he mentioned 'sinking' (inshab), which is one of the accompaniments of the beast of prey, which is the object of comparison.
If it is said: Just as claws are specific to the object of comparison, so too is 'sinking' (inshab), so what is the reason for making the attribution of the first an imaginative metaphor and the attribution of the second a reinforcing metaphor?
It is said: When two things specific to the object of comparison are gathered in the speech, whichever of them is stronger in specificity and connection to it, its attribution is imaginative, and whichever is less so, its attribution is reinforcing; and there is no doubt that claws are stronger in specificity and connection to it compared to 'sinking,' so its attribution is imaginative and the attribution of 'sinking' is reinforcing.
Meaning, this 'simile' is the predicate of an omitted subject, with an omitted genitive construction, meaning 'absolute simile.' The author only addressed the definition of absolute simile, which is the linguistic simile, even though what is among the objectives of the science of rhetoric (bayan) is the technical one, so that the discussion may lead from it to the realization of the technical simile, thus completing the benefit by knowing what is transferred from and the relationship between them.
