The Miser (21): The Death of Umm Awfa

قَالَ: «يَا لَلْهَوْلِ! كَيْفَ تَقُولُ؟ « أُمُّ أَوْفَى» هَلَكَتْ!»

He cried, "Good heavens! What are you saying? Umm Awfa is dead?"

قُلْتُ فِي لَهْجَةِ الْمُتَفَجِّعِ، وَلَهْفَةِ الْمُتَوَجِّعِ، مُؤَسِّيًا، نَاصِحًا لَهُ بِالصَّبْرِ مُوصِيًا، مُهَوِّنًا عَلَيْهِ نَكْبَتَهُ مُعَزِّيًا:

I spoke with the sorrowful tone of one in pain, offering him my sympathy, urging him to be patient, and trying to soften the blow of his loss:

«يَرْحَمُهَا اللَّهُ يَا أَبَا مُرَّةَ، وَعَوَّضَكَ عَنْهَا خَيْرًا.»

"May God have mercy on her, Abu Murra, and grant you something better in her place."

اشْتَدَّ انْزِعَاجُهُ اسْتَوْلَى عَلَيْهِ الْخَوْفُ تَمَلَكَهُ الْفَزَعُ.

He grew deeply agitated, overcome by fear and gripped by panic.

قَالَ: «كَيْفَ هَلَكَتْ أُمُّ أَوْفَى»؟ أَخْبِرْنِي.»

He demanded, "How did she die? Tell me."
