It is narrated in the Sahih from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The most despicable name in the sight of Allah is a man who calls himself the King of Kings, for there is no owner except Allah.'
His saying: 'The most despicable name' means the lowest name, and what is meant by the name is the person named; thus, the lowest name in the sight of Allah is a man who calls himself the King of Kings.
This is because he placed himself in a supreme rank, for kings are the highest class of humans in terms of authority, so he placed his rank above theirs, and this belongs to no one but Allah, the Almighty and Majestic. For this reason, he was punished with the opposite of his intention, so he became the most despicable name in the sight of Allah, since his intention was to aggrandize himself even over kings. Therefore, the most beloved name in the sight of Allah is that which indicates humility and submission, such as Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman, and the most hateful name in the sight of Allah is that which indicates tyranny, authority, and self-aggrandizement.
His saying: 'There is no owner except Allah' also means there is no King except Allah, the Almighty and Majestic. For this reason, the verse in Al-Fatihah came with two recitations: 'Master of the Day of Judgment' (Maliki Yawmi-d-Din) and 'King of the Day of Judgment' (Maliki Yawmi-d-Din), in order to combine both kingship and complete authority. He, glory be to Him, is a King and an Owner; a King possessing authority and greatness, whose word is effective, and an Owner who manages and directs His entire kingdom.
To Allah belongs creation, kingship, and management; there is no creator except Allah, no manager except Allah, and no owner except Allah. The Almighty said: 'Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the heaven and the earth?'
The interrogation is in the sense of negation, and it is imbued with the meaning of a challenge, meaning: if you find such a one, then bring him forth.
