- On the authority of Abu Shurayh: He used to be called by the kunya Abu al-Hakam, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to him:
- Indeed, Allah is the Judge (al-Hakam), and to Him belongs the judgment. He said: When my people differ over something, they come to me, and I judge between them, and both parties are satisfied.
- He said: How excellent this is! Do you have any children?
- I said: Shurayh, Muslim, and Abdullah. He said: Who is the eldest of them?
- I said: Shurayh. He said: Then you are Abu Shurayh. It was narrated by Abu Dawud and others (1).
- Changing it is like [the names] Allah, al-Rahman, Lord of the Worlds, and what resembles that.
- The second [category]: That which it is valid to describe others than Allah with, such as: al-Rahim (the Merciful), al-Sami' (the All-Hearing), and al-Basir (the All-Seeing).
- If the attribute is intended, it is forbidden to be named by it, but if the attribute is not intended, it is permissible to be named by it as a pure proper noun.
- His saying: 'On the authority of Abu Shurayh' refers to Hani' ibn Yazid al-Kindi, who came as a delegate to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with his people.
- His saying: 'Indeed, Allah is the Judge, and to Him belongs the judgment':
- He is the Judge, meaning the One who deserves to be the Judge over His servants, and He is the Judge in reality, as indicated by His saying: 'And to Him belongs the judgment'.
