يحدو بها كل فتى هيا تتلقاه بعد الوهن ذا وحاة وهن نحو البيت عامدات

Every young man urges them on, meeting them after weakness with a faint sound of weakness, heading towards the house.

سمعت وحاة الرعد، وهو صوته الممدود الخفي

يقال: أوحى الرجل إذا بعث برسول ثقة إلى عبد من عبيده ثقة

And the prevalent language in the Quran is 'awhā' with the alif, and the masdar and the root verb.

ويجوز في غير القرآن وحى إليه وحيا

And it is permissible outside the Quran to say 'wahā ilayhi wahyan'.

سمي وحيا لأن الملك أسره عن الخلق وخص به النبي المبعوث إليه

It was called 'wahy' because the angel concealed it from people and singled out the prophet sent to him.

أصل الإيحاء أن يسر بعضهم إلى بعض، كما في قوله تعالى: {يوحي بعضهم إلى بعض زخرف القول غرورا}

The origin of 'īḥā'' is for some to communicate secretly to others, as in God's saying: {Some of them cast to others ornate speech as deception}.

هذا أصل الحرف ثم قصر أوحاه على معنى ألهمه

This is the origin of the root, then 'awhāhu' was limited to the meaning of 'inspired him'.

أصل الوحي في اللغة إعلام في خفاء

The origin of 'al-wahy' in language is informing in secrecy.

ولذلك صار الإلهام يسمى وحيا

And for that reason, inspiration came to be called 'wahy'.

وكذلك الإشارة والإيماء يسمى وحيا، والكتابة تسمى وحيا

And likewise, signaling and gesturing are called 'wahy', and writing is called 'wahy'.

وما كان لبشر أن يكلمه اا إلا وحيا أو من وراء حجاب

And it is not for any human that God should speak to him except by revelation or from behind a veil.

معناه إلا أن يوحي إليه

Meaning, except that He reveals to him.

أصل الوحي الإشارة السريعة

The origin of 'al-wahy' is rapid signaling.

وذلك يكون بالكلام على سبيل الرمز والتعريض، ويكون بصوت مجرد عن التركيب، وبإشارة بعض الجوارح بالكتابة وغير ذلك

And that can be through speech by way of رمز and تعريض, or by a sound devoid of structure, or by gesturing with some limbs, or by writing, and other means.

ويقال للكلمة الإلهية التي تلقى إلى أنبيائه وأوليائه وحي

And the divine word conveyed to His prophets and His saints is called 'wahy'.

وذلك إما برسول مشاهد ترى ذاته ويسمع كلامه كتبليغ جبريل في صورة معينة

And that is either through a visible messenger whose form is seen and whose speech is heard, like Gabriel conveying in a specific form.

وإما بسماع كلام من غير معاينة كسماع موسى كلامه تعالى

Or by hearing speech without seeing, like Moses hearing the speech of God Almighty.

وإما بإلقاء في الروع كحديث: إن جبريل نفث في روعي

Or by casting into the heart, as in the hadith: 'Indeed, Gabriel breathed into my heart'.

وإما بإلهام نحو {وأوحينا إلى أم موسى}

Or by inspiration, such as {And We inspired the mother of Moses}.

وإما بتسخير نحو: {وأوحى ربك إلى النحل}

Or by subjugation, such as: {And your Lord inspired the bee}.

وإما بمنام كما دل عليه: حديث: انقطع الوحي وبقيت المبشرات رؤيا المؤمن

Or by a dream, as indicated by the hadith: 'Revelation ceased, and the good tidings remained as the believer's dream'.

أوحت نفسه: إذا وقع فيها خوف

His soul was moved: when fear befell it.

والوحى: السيد الكبير من الرجال

And al-wahy: the great lord among men.

وعلمت أني إن علقت بحبله نشبت يداي إلى وحى لم يصع

And I knew that if I clung to his rope, my hands would be caught by a great lord who did not stray.

والوحى: النار

And al-wahy: fire.

ما الوحى؟ قال: الملك

What is al-wahy? He said: The king.

كأنه مثل النار ينفع ويضر

As if it were like fire, beneficial and harmful.

والوحى: العجلة

And al-wahy: haste.

يقولون: الوحى الوحى العجلة العجلة

They say: 'Al-wahy, al-wahy,' meaning 'haste, haste'.

والوحى: الإسراع

And al-wahy: speed.

والوحاء الوحاء يعني البدار البدار

And 'al-wahā', 'al-wahā' means 'hurry', 'hurry'.

يفيض عنه الربو من وحائه

The panting flows from its speed.

وربما أدخلوا الكاف مع الألف واللام، فقالوا: الوحاك الوحاك

And sometimes they add the kaf with the alif and lam, and they say: 'Al-wahāk, al-wahāk'.

وحى بالشيء

He hurried with the thing.

وتوحى: أسرع

And tuwahā: he hastened.

إذا أردت أمرا فتدبر عاقبته فإن كانت شرا فانته وإن كانت خيرا فتوحه

If you intend a matter, consider its consequence; if it is evil, stop; and if it is good, hasten to it.

وشيء وحي: عجل مسرع

And something 'wahy': hurried, fast.

أمر وحي أي مسرع

A 'wahy' matter, meaning swift.

موت! وحي: أي سريع

A 'wahy' death: meaning swift.

واستوحاه: حركه ودعاه ليرسله

And 'istawḥāhu': he moved it and called it to send it.

استوحيت الكلب إذا دعوته لترسله على الصيد

You urge on a dog when you call it to send it after game.

واستوحاه: استفهمه

And 'istawḥāhu': he asked him.

ووحاه توحية: عجله

And 'wahāhu tawḥiyatan': he hurried it.

أوحى إليه: كلمه بكلام يخفيه

He revealed to him: He spoke to him with words he concealed.

وأيضا: أشار، كأومأ وومأ

And also: he signaled, like gesturing and nodding.

ومننه وحي الأنبياء

And from it is the revelation of the prophets.

وأيضا: أمر، وبه فسر قوله تعالى: {وإذ أوحيت إلى الحواريين}، أي أمرت

And also: command, and by this is interpreted God's saying: {And when I revealed to the disciples}, meaning 'I commanded'.

وأوحى ووحى وأحى: إذا ظلم في سلطانه

Say: 'It has been revealed to me from what you revealed,' with a hamza on the waw.

واستوحاه: استصرخه

And 'istawḥāhu': he cried out for help.

وأيضا استعجله

And also: he hastened him.

And 'al-īḥā'': weeping.

يقال: هو يوحي أباه، أي يبكيه

It is said: 'He is weeping for his father,' meaning he is crying for him.

والنائحة توحي الميت: تنوح عليه

And the wailing woman laments for the dead: she wails over him.

توحي بحال أبيها وهو متكيء على سنان كأنف النسر مفتوق

She laments her father's state while he leans on a spearhead like the beak of a split eagle.

ويقال: استوح لنا بني فلان ما خبرهم

And it is said: 'Inquire for us about the sons of so-and-so, what is their news?'

إن من لا يعرف الوحى أحمق

Indeed, he who does not know 'al-wahy' is a fool.

يقال للذي يتواحى دونه بالشيء

It is said of one who pretends not to know something.

وحي في حجر

A secret in a stone.

يضرب لمن يكتم سره

It is said of one who conceals his secret.

وقد يضرب للشيء الظاهر البين

And it may be said of something obvious and clear.

يقال: كالوحى في حجر إذا نقر فيه

It is said: 'Like a secret in a stone' if it is tapped.

كالوحي في حجر المسيل المخلد

Like a secret in the eternal stream's stone.

وأوحى العمل: أسرع فيه

And 'awḥā' the work: he hastened in it.
