وَالنَّعْيُ، كَغَنِي، يَكُونُ مَصْدَرًا كَمَا تَقَدَّمَ، يُقَالُ: جَاءَ نَعْيُ فُلانٍ، أَيْ نَعْيُهُ

And 'an-na'y', like 'ghani' (rich), can be a masdar as previously mentioned. It is said: 'The announcement of so-and-so has come', meaning his announcement.

وَقَامَ النَّاعِي فَأَسْمَعَا ! وَنَعَى الْكَرِيمَ الأَرْوَعَا

And the announcer stood and made them hear! And he announced the noble, the magnificent.

وَقَالَ أَبُو زَيْدٍ: النَّعْيُ (الْمَنْعِيُّ)، وَهُوَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَيِّتُ، وَالنَّعْيُ الْفِعْلُ.

And Abu Zayd said: 'An-na'y' (is) 'al-man'ee' (the one announced), who is the dead man, and 'an-na'y' (is) the act.

وَاسْتَنْعَتِ النَّاقَةُ: تَقَدَّمَتْ

And the she-camel 'istan'at': she advanced.

وَكَانَتْ ضَرْبَةٌ مِنْ شَدْقَمِي إِذَا مَا اسْتَنَتِ الإِبِلُ اسْتِنَاعًا

And it was a blow from my cheekbone when the camels advanced with a rush.

ظَلَلْنَا نَعُوجُ الْعِيسَ فِي عَرْصَاتِهَا وَقُوفًا وَنَسْتَنْعِي بِهَا فَنُصَوِّرُهَا

We spent the day guiding the camels in their courtyards, standing, and we urged them forward and depicted them.

أَوْ اسْتَنْعَتِ النَّاقَةُ: إِذَا تَرَاجَعَتْ نَافِرَةً

And 'an-na'yaan' is a masdar meaning 'an-na'y' (announcement of death).

وَقَدْ يُجْمَعُ النَّعْيُ نَعَايَا، كَمَا يُجْمَعُ الْمَرِيُّ مِنَ النُّوقِ مَرَايَا، وَالصَّفِيُّ صَفَايَا.

And 'an-na'y' may be collected as 'na'aaya', just as 'al-marree' (a type of she-camel) from she-camels is collected as 'maraaya', and 'as-safiyy' (chosen) as 'safaya'.

وَقَالَ الأَحْمَرُ: ذَهَبَتْ تَمِيمٌ فَلَا تُنْعَى وَلَا تُشْهَرُ، أَيْ لَا تُذْكَرُ.

And Al-Ahmar said: 'Tamim has perished, so they are not announced nor are they made famous', meaning they are not mentioned.

وَاسْتَنْعَى ذِكْرُ فُلانٍ: شَاعَ.

And the mention of so-and-so 'istan'a': it became widespread.

وَاسْتَنْعَى بِهِ الشَّرُّ إِذَا تَتَابَعَ بِهِ.

And evil 'istan'a' with him if it followed him continuously.
