شَقَّهُ شَقًّا فَاسِدًا، أَوْ صَالِحًا، كَفَرَاهُ بِالتَّشْدِيدِ، وَأَفْرَاهُ.
He split it with a damaging cut, or a good one; he split it (kaffāhu) with emphasis, and he split it (afrahū).
فَرَيْتُ الشَّيْءَ أَفْرِيهِ فَرْيًا: قَطَعْتُهُ لِأُصْلِحَهُ.
I split the thing, I split it, a splitting: I cut it to repair it.
فَرَى الشَّيْءَ فَرْيًا وَفَرَاهُ: شَقَّهُ وَأَفْسَدَهُ.
He split the thing, a splitting, and he split it: he split it and damaged it.
الإِفْرَاءُ هُوَ التَّشْقِيقُ عَلَى وَجْهِ الْفَسَادِ.
Al-Ifra' is the splitting with the intent of corruption.
أَفْرَى الْجِلْدَ مَزَّقَهُ وَخَرَقَهُ وَأَفْسَدَهُ يَفْرِيهِ إِفْرَاءً.
He tore the skin, ripped it, and damaged it, tearing it with ifra'.
يُقَالُ قَدْ أَفْرَيْتُ وَمَا فَرَيْتُ، أَيْ أَفْسَدْتُ وَمَا أَصْلَحْتُ.
It is said, 'I have done ifra' and not faryā,' meaning, 'I have damaged and not repaired.'
وَالْمُتْقِنُونَ مِنْ أَئِمَّةِ اللُّغَةِ يَقُولُونَ: فَرَى لِلْإِفْسَادِ، وَأَفْرَى لِلْإِصْلَاحِ، وَمَعْنَاهُمَا الشَّقُّ.
And the masters among the linguists say: 'farā' is for damaging, and 'afra'' is for repairing, and their meaning is splitting.
وَلأَنْتَ تَفْرِي مَا خَلَقْتَ وَبَعْضُ الْقَوْمِ يَخْلُقُ ثُمَّ لا يَفْرِي.
And you accomplish what you create, while some people create but do not accomplish.
وَفَرَى الْكَذِبَ: اخْتَلَقَهُ، كَافْتَرَاهُ.
And he fabricated a lie: he invented it, like iftarāhu.
فَرَى فُلَانٌ كَذِبًا: خَلَقَهُ، وَافْتَرَاهُ اخْتَلَقَهُ.
So-and-so fabricated a lie: he created it, and iftarāhu: he invented it.
اسْتُعْمِلَ الاِفْتِرَاءُ فِي الْقُرْآنِ فِي الْكَذِبِ وَلِلظُّلْمِ وَالشِّرْكِ.
Al-iftirā' has been used in the Quran for lying, injustice, and polytheism.
وَمَنْ يُشْرِكْ بِاللهِ فَقَدِ افْتَرَى إِثْمًا عَظِيمًا.
And whoever associates others with Allah has indeed fabricated a great sin.
انْظُرْ كَيْفَ يَفْتَرُونَ عَلَى اللهِ الْكَذِبَ.
See how they invent lies against Allah.
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَى عَلَى اللهِ الْكَذِبَ.
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah?
وَفَرَى الْمُزَادَةَ فَرْيًا: خَلَقَهَا وَصَنَعَهَا.
And he made the waterskin, a making: he created it and fashioned it.
شِلْتُ يَدَا فَارِيَةٍ! فَرَتْهَا مِسْكٌ شَبُوبٌ ثُمَّ وَفَرَتْهَا.
May the hands of the maker be cut off! She made it from young musk, then she completed it.
وَفَرَى الْأَرْضَ فَرِيًا: سَارَهَا وَقَطَعَهَا.
And he traversed the land, a traversing: he journeyed across it and cut through it.
وَفَرِيَ الرَّجُلُ، كَرَضِيَ، فَرَىً، بِالْفَتْحِ مَقْصُورٌ: تَحَيَّرَ وَدَهِشَ.
And the man was bewildered, like 'radiya', fariyā, with fatḥ and maqṣūr: he was bewildered and astonished.
إِذَا نَظَرَ فَلَمْ يُدْرِ مَا يَصْنَعُ.
When he looks and does not know what to do.
وَأَفْرَاهُ: أَصْلَحَهُ، أَوْ أَمَرَ بِإِصْلَاحِهِ.
And afrahu: he repaired it, or ordered its repair.
وَأَفْرَى فُلَانًا: لَامَهُ.
And aflā fulānan: he blamed him.
وَالْفِرْيَةُ، بِالْفَتْحِ: الْجَلَبَةُ.
And al-firyatu, with fatḥ: the clamor.
وَالْفِرْيَةُ، بِالْكَسْرِ: الْكَذِبُ، وَهُوَ اسْمٌ مِنْ افْتِرَاءٍ، وَالْجَمْعُ فِرًى.
And al-firyatu, with kasr: the lie, which is a noun from iftirā', and the plural is firā.
وَالْفَرِيُّ، كَغَنِيٍّ: الْأَمْرُ الْمُخْتَلَقُ الْمَصْنُوعُ أَوْ الْعَظِيمُ.
And al-fariyyu, like ghaniyy: the fabricated, manufactured, or great matter.
وَبِكُلِّ ذَلِكَ فُسِّرَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {لَقَدْ جِئْتَ شَيْئًا فَرِيًّا}.
And with all of that, the saying of God Almighty is interpreted: 'You have indeed brought forth a wondrous thing.'
وَالْفَرِيُّ: الْوَاسِعَةُ الْكَبِيرَةُ مِنَ الدِّلَاءِ كَأَنَّهَا شُقَّتْ كَالْفِرْيَةِ، كَغَنِيَّةٍ.
And al-fariyy: the wide, large one of buckets, as if it were split, like al-firyatu, like ghaniyah.
وَالْفَرِيُّ: الْحَلِيبُ سَاعَةَ يُحْلَبُ.
And al-fariyy: the milk at the time it is milked.
وَتَفَرَّى الْأَدِيمُ: انْشَقَّ، وَهُوَ مُطَاوِعُ أَفْرَى.
And the leather split: it cracked, and it is the passive of afra'.
وَمِنْهُ تَتَفَرَّى اللَّيْلُ عَنْ صُبْحِهِ.
And from it, the night splits open to reveal its morning.
وَتَفَرَّتِ الْعَيْنُ: انْبَجَسَتْ.
And the eye gushed forth: it sprang up.
وَهُوَ يَفْرِي الْفَرِيَّ، كَغَنِيٍّ.
And he performs the wondrous deeds, like ghaniyy.
أَيْ يَأْتِي بِالْعَجَبِ فِي عَمَلِهِ.
Meaning, he brings wonder in his work.
تَرَكْتُهُ يَفْرِي فِرْيَةً.
I left him performing a wondrous deed.
فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا يَفْرِي فِرْيَهُ.
So I did not see a genius performing his feat.
قَدْ أَطْعَمَتْنِي دَقْلًا حَوْلِيًّا قَدْ كُنْتَ تَفْرِينَ بِهِ الْفِرْيَا.
She fed me a year-old date palm that you used to boast about.
انْفَرَى جِلْدُهُ: انْشَقَّ.
His skin split: it cracked.
وَأَفْرَى الْأَوْدَاجَ بِالسَّيْفِ: شَقَّهَا.
And he cut the jugular veins with the sword: he split them.
وَجِلْدٌ فَرِيٌّ، كَغَنِيٍّ: مَشْقُوقٌ.
And a skin fariy, like ghaniyy: split.
وَرَجُلٌ فَرِيٌّ، كَغَنِيٍّ، وَمُفْرًى كَمِنْبَرٍ: مُخْتَلَقٌ.
And a man fariy, like ghaniyy, and mufra as minbar: fabricated.
مَنْ أَفْرَى الْفِرَى.
Whoever commits the greatest of lies.
الْفَرِيُّ الْفَرِيُّ، كَغَنِيٍّ فِيهِمَا، أَيْ الْعَجَلَةُ الْعَجَلَةُ.
Al-fariyy al-fariyy, like ghaniyy in both: meaning haste, haste.
وَأَفْرَى الْجُلَّةَ: شَقَّهَا وَأَخْرَجَ مَا فِيهَا.
And he split the dung heap: he split it and took out what was in it.
وَالْمُفْرِيَّةُ: الْمُزَادَةُ الْمَعْمُولَةُ الْمُصْلَحَةُ.
And al-mufriyyah: the made and repaired waterskin.
وَأَفْرَى الْجُرْحَ: بَطَّهُ.
And he opened the wound: he cut it open.
وَفَرَى الْبَرْقُ يَفْرِي فَرِيًا: وَهُوَ تَلَأْلُؤُهُ وَدَوَامُهُ فِي السَّمَاءِ.
And lightning flashed, flashing, a flashing: its twinkling and its duration in the sky.
وَفَرَاهُ يُفْرِيهِ: قَطَعَهُ بِالْهَجَاءِ وَقَدْ يُكْنَى بِهِ عَنِ الْمُبَالَغَةِ فِي الْقَتْلِ.
And he cut it, cutting it: he cut it with insult, and it may be used to imply exaggeration in killing.
وَفِرْيَانُ: بِالضَّمِّ وَكَسْرِ الرَّاءِ الْمُشَدَّدَةِ: بَلَدٌ بِالْمَغْرِبِ.
And Faryān: with damma and kasr of the shaddah: a country in the Maghreb.
وَفِرْيَانُ، بِالْكَسْرِ: جَدُّ أَبِي بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ بْنِ خَالِدِ بْنِ فِرْيَانَ النَّخَعِيِّ الْبَلْخِيِّ الْفِرْيَانِيِّ ثِقَةٌ.
And Faryān, with kasr: the grandfather of Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd ibn Khalid ibn Faryān al-Nakha'i al-Balkhi al-Firyani, is trustworthy.
وَالْفِرَاءُ: الْجَبَانُ.
And al-firā': the coward.
وَأَيْضًا: الْعَجَبُ.
And also: wonder.
