And he struck him with the whip, like he pleased him: he hit him with it.
غشي فلاناً يغشاه: إذا أتاه.

غشيه غشياناً: جاءه، وأغشاه إياه غيره؛ كغشاه يغشوه، من حد دعا.
He visited him a visitation: he came to him, and another made him come to him; like he made him come, he makes him come, from the pattern of 'da'a' (to call).
غشي فلانة يغشاها: جامعها كني به عنه، كما كني بالإتيان والمصدر الغشيان.
He had intercourse with so-and-so, he has intercourse with her: he had sexual intercourse with her, a euphemism used for it, just as euphemisms like 'coming' and the masdar 'al-ghishyan' are used.
واستغشى ثوبه، كما في التهذيب، واستغشى به، كما في الصحاح، إذا تغطى به، زاد في المحكم، كيلا يسمع ولا يرى؛
And he covered himself with his garment, as in Al-Tahdhib, and he covered himself with it, as in Al-Sihah, if he covered himself with it, as added in Al-Muhkam, so that he would not be heard or seen;
ألا حين يستغشون ثيابهم، الآية؛ قيل: إن طائفة من المنافقين قالت: إذا أغلقنا الأبواب وأرخينا الستور واستغشينا ثيابنا وثنينا صدورنا على عداوة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم كيف يعلم بنا؟ فنزلت هذه الآية.
Behold, when they cover themselves with their garments, the verse; it was said: A group of hypocrites said: If we close the doors, draw the curtains, cover ourselves with our garments, and harbor enmity towards Muhammad, peace be upon him, how will He know about us? So this verse was revealed.
استغشوا ثيابهم أي جعلوها غشاوة على أسماعهم، وذلك عبارة عن الامتناع من الإصغاء؛
They covered themselves with their garments, meaning they made them a veil over their hearing, which is an expression of refraining from listening;
وقيل: هو كناية عن العدو، كقولهم: شمر ذيله وألقى ثوبه.
And it was said: it is a metaphor for the enemy, like their saying: he tucked up his tail and threw his garment.
