يقال: أخذه عنوة، أي قسرا، وفتحت هذه المدينة! عنوة، أي بالقتال، قوتل أهلها حتى غلبوا عليها وعجزوا عن حفظها فتركوها وجلوا من غير أن يجرى بينهم وبين المسلمين فيها عقد صلح، فالإجماع على أن العنوة هي الأخذ بالقهر والغلبة.
It is said: he took him by force ('unwah), meaning coercively. And this city was conquered by force ('unwah), meaning by fighting; its people fought until they were overcome and unable to defend it, so they left and evacuated without a peace treaty being made between them and the Muslims. Thus, there is consensus that Al-'unwah is taking by coercion and dominance.
يقال: أخذه عنوة، أي قسرا، وفتحت هذه المدينة! عنوة، أي بالقتال، قوتل أهلها حتى غلبوا عليها وعجزوا عن حفظها فتركوها وجلوا من غير أن يجرى بينهم وبين المسلمين فيها عقد صلح، فالإجماع على أن العنوة هي الأخذ بالقهر والغلبة.

Fear Allah concerning the women, for they are captives with you.
استشعروا الخشية وعنوا بالأصوات
Feel the awe and suppress the voices.
والعنية: أخلاط من بول وبعر يحبس مدة، ثم يطلى بها البعير الجرب، كالعنية.
And Al-'uniyyah: is mixtures of urine and dung that are kept for a period, then the mangy camel is smeared with them, like Al-'uniyyah.
وفي المثل: العنية تشفي الجرب، انتهى.
And in the proverb: Al-'uniyyah cures mange, end of quote.
يقال: عناه تعنية: إذا طلاه بها؛ نقله الجوهري.
It is said: he applied 'uniyyah to it, meaning he smeared it with it; transmitted by Al-Jawhari.
لا يحرز المرء أعناء البلاد ولا تبنى له في السموات السلاليم
A person cannot reach the regions of the land, nor are ladders built for him in the heavens.
وعنت الأرض بالنبات تعنو عنوا: أظهرته.
And the land produced vegetation, it yields ('anā) 'unūwan: it brought it forth.
إذا ظهر نبتها، يقال: لم تعن بلادنا بشيء إذا لم تنبت شيئا، قال ذو الرمة:
If its vegetation appears, it is said: our land did not produce anything ('ana) if it did not grow anything, said Dhu al-Rummah:
ولم يبق بالخلصاء مما عنت بهمن الرطب إلا يبسها وهجيرها
And nothing remained in Al-Khalsā' of what it produced of fresh produce except its dryness and heat.
يقال: ما أعنت الأرض شيئا: أي ما أنبتت؛ كما في الصحاح.
It is said: the land did not produce anything (a'nata), meaning it did not grow anything; as in Al-Sihah.
وعنا الكلب للشصيء يعنوه عنوا: أتاه فشمه.
And the dog approached the object ('anā) it, it 'anūhu 'anwan: it came to it and sniffed it.
عنت القربة بماء كثير تعنو: لم تحفظه فظهر؛ وقيل: عنت القربة سال ماؤها.
The waterskin was full of much water, it yielded ('anat) 'anū: it did not retain it and it appeared; and it was said: the waterskin yielded ('anat), its water flowed out.
عنت به أمور: نزلت؛ نقله الجوهري.
Matters befell him ('anat bihi): they occurred; transmitted by Al-Jawhari.
وإذا شق عليه؛ نقله ابن سيده.
And when the matter became difficult for him ('anā 'alayhi); transmitted by Ibn Sidah.
وفكوا العاني، أي الأسير، وكأنه مأخوذ من الذل والخضوع.
And they freed the captive ('ānī), meaning the prisoner, and it is as if it is derived from humiliation and submission.
والدم العاني: هو السائل؛ نقله الجوهري.
And Al-'ānī blood: is the flowing blood; transmitted by Al-Jawhari.
وقد عنا عنوا: إذا سال، عن ابن القطاع.
And it flowed ('anā) 'anwan: if it flowed, from Ibn al-Qaṭṭā'.
وعنوان الكتاب، بالضم والكسر: سمته، كمعناه، كمعظم، وقد عنونته عنونة وعنوانا: إذا وسمته.
And the title of the book ('unwān), with dammah and kasrah: is its name, like its meaning (ma'nāhu), like mu'aẓẓam, and you titled it ('annawtahu) 'unwānah and 'unwānan: if you marked it.
والتعني: التطلي بالعنية؛ ومنه قول الشعبي: لأن أتعنى بعنية أحب إلي من أن أقول في مسألة برأيي.
And Al-Ta'nī: is smearing with Al-'uniyyah; and from this is the saying of Al-Sha'bī: 'For me to be smeared with Al-'uniyyah is more beloved to me than to give an opinion on a matter based on my own reasoning.'
وأعنى الولي الأرض: أمطرها فأنبتت؛ عن ابن القطاع، والولي: الغيث الذي بعد الوسمي؛ وأنشد الجوهري لعدي:
And the subsequent rain ('a'nā) watered the land: it rained upon it, so it grew; from Ibn al-Qaṭṭā', and Al-Walī: is the rain that comes after Al-Wasmi; and Al-Jawhari cited for 'Adī:
ويأكلن ما أعنى الولي فلم يلت كأن بحافات النهاء المزارع
And they eat what the subsequent rain ('a'nā) brought forth, and it did not diminish, as if there were farms on the edges of the water channels.
وعناه الأمر يعنوه: أهمه.
And the matter concerned him ('anāhu): it preoccupied him.
وفي جبهته عنوان من كثرة السجود: أي أثر؛ قال الشاعر:
And on his forehead is a mark ('unwān) from frequent prostration: meaning a trace; the poet said:
وأشمط عنوان به من سجوده كركبة عنز من عنوز بني نصر
And an old man with a mark on him from his prostration, like the knee of a goat from the goats of Banu Naṣr.
وفي مرثية سيدنا عثمان، رضي الله تعالى عنه: ضحوا بأشمط عنوان السجود به يقطع الليل ترتيلا وقرآنا
And in the elegy of our master Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him: They sacrificed an old man with the mark of prostration on him, who passes the night reciting and reading the Quran.
وأعنى الأسير: أبقاه في إساره.

والعواني: العوامل؛ وبه فسر قول الجعدي:
And Al-'awānī: are the laborers; and with this, the saying of Al-Ja'dī is interpreted:
وأعضاد المطي عواني
And the forelegs of the camels are laborers.
وأعنى الرجل: صادف أرضا قد أمشرت وكثر كلؤها.
And the man encountered ('a'nā) land that had been rained upon and its vegetation was abundant.
والعني، كعتي: الأسر، لغة في العنو؛ ومنه الحديث: الخال وارث من لا وارث له يفكنيه، أي أسره والمعنى: ما يلزمه ويتعلق به بسبب الجنايات التي سبيلها أن يتحملها العاقلة؛ كذا في النهاية.
And Al-'unī, like 'utī: is captivity, a language variant of Al-'unwah; and from this is the hadith: 'The maternal uncle inherits from one who has no heir, he frees his captive ('uniyyah), meaning his prisoner. And the meaning is: what is incumbent upon him and related to him due to offenses that the 'āqilah (blood relatives) are responsible for bearing; thus in Al-Nihāyah.
وعنا فيه الأكل يعنو عنوا: نجع؛ عن ابن القطاع.
And the food was effective in it ('anā fīhi al-akl) 'anū 'anwan: it was effective; from Ibn al-Qaṭṭā'.
وعنا يعنو عنوا: أقام عنه أيضا.
And he stayed ('anā) 'anū 'anwan: he remained away also.
وعنا الكتاب يعنوه: عنونه؛ عنه أيضا.
And the book was titled ('anā) it 'anūhu: it was titled; from the same source.
والعنوان، بالكسر: لغة في الضم.
And Al-'unwān, with kasrah: is a linguistic variant of the dammah pronunciation.
وسألته فلم يعن لي بشيء: أي لم يند ولم يبض.
And I asked him, but he did not yield ('anā lī) anything: meaning he did not respond or clarify.
