أصلت الناقة فهي مصلية: إذا وقع ولدها في صلاها وقرب نتاجها؛
A she-camel is 'aṣlat' and she is 'mushalliyah': if her offspring is in her loin and her birth is near;
والصلاة: اختلف في وزنها ومعناها؛
And 'al-ṣalāh': there is disagreement about its form and meaning;
أما معناها فقيل: الدعاء، وهو أصل معانيها، وبه صدر الجوهري الترجمة؛
As for its meaning, it is said: supplication, and this is the origin of its meanings, and Al-Jauhari began the entry with it;
ومن قوله تعالى: {وصل عليهم} ، أي ادع لهم.
And from His saying, the Almighty: {And pray for them}, meaning, supplicate for them.
يقال: صلى على فلان إذا دعا له وزكاه؛
It is said: 'ṣallā' upon so-and-so if he supplicated for him and purified him;
الصلاة من الله الرحمة؛
Prayer from God is mercy;
ومن قوله تعالى: {هو الذي يصلي عليكم} ، أي يرحم.
And from His saying, the Almighty: {It is He who prays upon you}, meaning, He has mercy.
وقيل: الصلاة من الملائكة: الاستغفار والدعاء؛
And it is said: Prayer from the angels is: seeking forgiveness and supplication;
وصلت عليه الملائكة عشرا، أي استغفرت؛
And the angels prayed for her ten times, meaning, they sought forgiveness;
وقيل: الصلاة حسن الثناء من الله، عز وجل، على رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم؛
And it is said: Prayer is good praise from God, the Almighty, upon His Messenger, peace be upon him;
أولئك عليهم صلوات من ربهم ورحمة.
Those are upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy.
والصلاة: عبادة فيها ركوع وسجود، وهذه العبادة لم تنفك شريعة عنها وإن اختلفت صورها بحسب شرع فشرع،
And prayer: is an act of worship involving bowing and prostration, and this act of worship has not been absent from any divine law, even if its forms differed according to different laws;
إن! الصلاة كانت على المؤمنين كتابا موقوتا؛
Indeed, prayer has been ordained for the believers at fixed times;
سميت ببعض أجزائها الذي هو الدعاء.
It was named after some of its parts, which is supplication.
والصلاة واحدة الصلوات المفروضة؛ وهو اسم يوضع موضع المصدر.
And 'al-ṣalāh' is one of the prescribed prayers; and it is a noun used in place of the masdar.
وصلى صلاة، ولا يقال: صلى تصلية، أي دعا.
And he prayed a prayer, and it is not said: he performed 'taṣliyah', meaning, he supplicated.
تركت المدام وعزف القيان وأدمنت تصلية وابتهالا
I abandoned wine and the music of singers, and I persisted in supplication and devotion.
وصلى الفرس تصلية: تلا السابق.
And the horse performed 'taṣliyah': it followed the leader.
إذا جاء مصليا، وهو الذي يتلو السابق لأن رأسه عند صلا الفرس السابق،
If it comes 'muṣalliyan', which is the one that follows the leader because its head is at the loin of the leading horse,
سبق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وصلى أبو بكر وثلث عمر وخبطتنا فتنة فما شاء الله
The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, was first, Abu Bakr followed, then Umar, and a tribulation befell us, as God willed.
وصلى الحمار أتنه تصلية: طردها وقحمها الطريق؛
And the donkey performed 'taṣliyah' with its mate: it chased her and drove her onto the road;
والصلوات: كنائس اليهود؛
And 'al-ṣalawāt': are the synagogues of the Jews;
لهدمت صوامع وبيع وصلوات ومساجد.
Monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques would have been destroyed.
وقيل: أصله بالعبرانية صلوتا، بفتح الصاد والتاء الفوقية.
And it is said: its origin in Hebrew is 'ṣalūtā', with a fatha on the sad and the upper ta.
وأقوى القراآت في هذا الحرف ما عليه العامة وهو وصلوات،
And the strongest of the readings in this word is what the general populace follows, which is 'wa-ṣalawāt',
الصلاة واوية مأخوذة من صلى إذا دعا، وهو اسم وضع موضع المصدر؛
Prayer is waw-initial, derived from 'ṣallā' if he supplicated, and it is a noun placed in the position of the masdar;
فقيل: إنها من الصلوين وهما مكتنفا ذنب الفرس وغيره مما يجري مجرى ذلك، وهو رأي أبي علي؛
So it is said: it is from the two loins, which flank the tail of a horse and other similar things, and this is the opinion of Abu Ali;
وقيل: إن الأصل في الصلاة اللزوم، صلي واصطلى إذا لزم، وهي من أعظم الفرض الذي أمر بلزومه؛
And it is said: the origin of prayer is adherence; 'ṣallā' and 'iṣṭalā' if he adhered, and it is among the greatest obligations that one is commanded to adhere to;
وقيل: إن أصلها في اللغة التعظيم، وسميت هذه العبادة صلاة لما فيها من تعظيم الرب، جل وعز؛
And it is said: its origin in language is veneration, and this act of worship is called prayer because of the veneration of the Lord within it, Glorified and Exalted is He;
وقيل: إنها من صليت العود بالنار إذا لينته، لأن المصلي يلين بالخشوع؛
And it is said: it is from 'ṣallaytu al-'ūd bi-l-nār' if you softened it with fire, because the one praying softens with humility;
وقيل: هي من الصلي، ومعنى صلى الرجل أزال عن نفسه الصلى الذي هو نار الله الموقدة، وبناء صلى كبناء مرض وقرد لإزالة المرض والقراد؛
And it is said: it is from 'al-ṣalī', and the meaning of 'ṣallā' a man is that he removed from himself the 'ṣalā' which is the ignited fire of God, and the pattern of 'ṣallā' is like the pattern of 'marḍa' and 'qirada' for removing sickness and ticks;
والأقرب أنها مأخوذة من الدعاء، إذ لا صلاة إلا وفيها الدعاء وما يجري مجراه.
And the closest is that it is derived from supplication, as there is no prayer except that it contains supplication and what is analogous to it.
اللهم صل على محمد، معناه عظمه في الدنيا بإعلاء ذكره وإظهار دعوته وإبقاء شريعته، وفي الآخرة بتشفيعه في أمته وتضعيف أجره ومثوبته؛
O God, bless Muhammad, meaning, exalt him in this world by raising his mention, manifesting his call, and preserving his law, and in the Hereafter by granting him intercession for his community and multiplying his reward and recompense;
اللهم صل أنت على محمد لأنك أعلم بما يليق به.
O God, You Yourself bless Muhammad, for You know best what befits him.
والصلاة عليه صلى الله عليه وسلم جعلت وسيلة للتقرب منه، كما جعلت هدايا الفقراء إلى الأمراء وسائل ليتقربوا بها إليهم وليعود نفعها إليهم،
And praying for him, peace be upon him, is made a means of drawing near to him, just as the gifts of the poor to the rulers are made means for them to draw near to them and for the benefit to return to them,
واتخذوا من مقام إبراهيم مصلى، يحتمل أحد هذه المعاني.
And take from the station of Abraham a place of prayer, which can mean any of these meanings.
وجئت في أصلائهم: أي أدبارهم.
And I came upon their 'aṣlā': meaning, their backsides.
وصلت الفرس: استرخى صلوها، مثل أصلت وصليت؛
And the horse 'waṣalat': its loins relaxed, like 'aṣlat' and 'ṣallaytu';
