And a clear and cold day: meaning cold, or intensely cold, with no cloud in it and no turbidity.
استصفاه: أخذ منه صفوه، أي خياره.
He took its best: he took its pure part, meaning its choicest.
استخلصه؛ كاصطفاه.
He extracted it; like He chose it.
الاصطفاء تناول صفو الشيء؛ كما أن الاختيار تناول خيره؛ ومنه محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم مصطفاه، أي مختاره.
Al-istifaa' is taking the pure part of a thing; just as al-ikhtiyar is taking its good; and from this is Muhammad, peace be upon him, His chosen one, meaning His selected one.
واصطفى البنات على البنين.
And He preferred daughters over sons.
والصفي، كغني: ما اختاره الرئيس لنفسه قبل القسمة من فرس أو سيف أو جارية؛ وهو مجاز، والجمع الصفايا.
And al-safi, like ghani: what the leader chose for himself before the division, from a horse, or a sword, or a female slave; and this is metaphorical, and the plural is al-safaya.
والصفاة: الحجر الصلد الضخم الذي لا ينبت شيئا.
And al-safah: the large, hard stone that does not grow anything.
يقال في المثل: ما تندى صفاته.
It is said in the proverb: His characteristics do not soften.
كمثل صفوان عليه تراب.
Like a rock with dust upon it.
أصفى فلان من المال ومن الأدب: إذا خلا عنهما؛ نقله الجوهري، كأنه خلص منهما.
So-and-so became free from wealth and from literature: if he was free from them; transmitted by Al-Jawhari, as if he was purified from them.
إن الصفا والمروة من شعائر الله.
Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah.
والمصفاة، بالكسر: ما يصفى منه، وهو الراووق، والجمع المصافي، والعامة تقول المصفية.
And al-masfah, with kasr: what is purified from it, and it is the strainer, and the plural is al-masafi, and the common people say al-masfiyah.
وأول أيام البرد يقال له: صفية، كسمية، وثانيها صفوان.
And the first of the cold days is called: Safiyyah, like Sumayyah, and the second is Safwan.
صفاه تصفية: أزال القذى عنه؛ ومنه العسل المصفى.
He purified it with tasfiyah: he removed the impurity from it; and from this is the purified honey.
وفي الإناء صفوة من ماء أو خمر، بالكسر، أي قليل.
And in the container is a safwah of water or wine, with kasr, meaning a small amount.
وقرئ فاذكروا اسم الله عليها صوافي (10)، بالياء، يعني أنها خالصة لله تعالى.
And it was read: 'So remember the name of Allah upon them, standing' (10), with the ya', meaning they are exclusively for Allah, the Almighty.
وهما خليلان متصافيان.
And they are two sincere friends.
وأصفى الأمير دار فلان: أخذ ما فيها.
And the prince took possession of so-and-so's house: he took what was in it.
وأصفى الحافر: بلغ الصفا فارتدع، أي بلغ حجرا منعه من الحفر؛ وكذلك أكدى وأحجر.
And the digger reached bedrock: he reached the stone that prevented him from digging; likewise, he hit rock and encountered stones.
