Everything that afflicts the fasting person is trivial except backbiting, for it invalidates his fast, and it is like a killing blow to him, and 'al-shawā' is that which is not lethal.
أعطاه من الشوى، وهو رذال المال
He gave him from the 'shawā', which is the inferior part of the wealth.
أكلنا الشوى حتى إذا لم ندع شوى أشرنا إلى خيراتها بالأصابع
We ate the inferior animals until, when we left no inferior animals, we pointed to their best parts with our fingers.

The 'shawā' of a horse: its limbs, because it is said 'strong of limb', and this is not applicable to the head because they described horses with flowing cheeks and noble faces, meaning their thinness.
وأشواه الرامي: أصاب شواه، أي الأطراف، لا مقتله
And 'ashwāhu' the thrower: he hit its extremities, meaning the limbs, not its vital spot.
فإن من القول التي لا شوى لها إذا زل عن ظهر اللسان انفلاتها
For among words, there are those that have no triviality, when they slip from the tongue's utterance.

والمشوى، كالمهدى: الذي أخطأه الحجر من الحية؛ فهو حي
And 'al-mashwā', like 'al-mahdā': that which the stone missed from the snake; it is alive.
كأن لدى ميسورها متن حية تحرك مشواها ومات ضريبها
As if beside its flank was the body of a snake whose 'mashwā' moved, and its companion died.
والشواية، مثلثة: بقية قوم أو مال هلك
And 'al-shawāyah', with three possible pronunciations: a remnant of people or wealth that perished.
