This was because he liked Malik's legal opinion and feared prohibition due to people's disagreement about intoxication, so he paused and recited the verse.

وحولي بكر وأشياعها ولست خلاة لمن أوعدنأي لست بمنزلة الخلاة يأخذها الآخذ كيف شاء بل أنا في عز ومنعة.

And around me are young camels and their companions, and I am not a khalah for one who makes a promise; meaning, I am not in a position where one can take me as they please, but rather I am in honor and strength.

أو الخلاة: كل بقلة قلعتها

Its khala shall not be cut.

وخلى الماشية يخليها خليا: جز لها خلى.

And khalla al-maashiyah yukhleehaa khaliyan: he cut khala for it (the livestock).

خلى الفرس: إذا ألقى فيه اللجام

Khalla the horse: if he gives it the reins.

تمطيت أخليه اللجام وبذني وشخصي يسامي شخصه وهو طائله

I stretched out, giving the reins to the horse, and with my body and person, I matched his stature, and he was within my reach.

وخلى اللجام عن الفرس يخليه خليا: نزعه.

And khalla al-lijaam 'an al-faras yukhleehi khaliyan: to remove it.

خلى القدرة: ألقى تحتها حطبا، أو طرح فيها لحما

Khalla the pot: to put fuel under it, or to put meat in it.

خلى الشعير في المخلاة: إذا جمعه فيها.

Khalla the barley in the mikhlaah: if he gathers it in it.

والمختلي: الأسد لشجاعته، وهو مجاز.

And khaalaahu mukhaalaatan: to wrestle with him.

ولا يدري الشقي بمن يخالي

And the wretch does not know with whom he wrestles.

كأنه إذا صارعه خلا به فلم يستعن واحد منهما بأحد، وكل واحد منهما يخلو بصاحبه.

It is as if when he wrestles with him, he is alone with him, and neither of them seeks help from anyone, and each of them is alone with his companion.

Khali is the diminutive of khali, which is the fresh plant; he said: it is a metaphor for a base man to whom a matter comes and he messes it up.
