قالت له لست لك بمخلية، أي لم أجدك خاليا من الزوجات غيري؛
She said to him, 'I am not one who finds you free from wives besides me,' meaning I did not find you empty of wives other than me;
وخلا الرجل: (وقع في موضع خال لا يزاحم فيه، كأخلى.
And a man 'khala': (he fell into an empty place where he was not jostled, like 'akhla'.
ومننه المثل: الذئب! مخليا أشد.
And of it is the proverb: The wolf! when alone is fiercer.
وخلا على بعض الطعام: إذا اقتصر عليه.
And 'khala' upon some food: if he limited himself to it.
واستخلى الملك فأخلاه وأخلى به ؛
And the king sought to be alone, so he made him alone and he was alone with him;
سأله أن يجتمع به في خلوة ففعل، وأخلاه معه.
He asked him to meet him in seclusion, so he did, and he made him alone with him.
وقوله تعالى: {وإذا خلوا إلى شياطينهم} ؛ يقال إلى بمعنى مع كما قال تعالى: {من أنصاري إلى ا} .
And His saying, the Almighty: {And when they are alone with their devils}; it is said 'ila' means 'with', as He the Almighty said: {Who are my helpers to God}.
وقال بعضهم: أخليت بفلان أي خلوت به.
And some of them said: 'akhlaytu bi-fulan' meaning I was alone with him.

'Akhlaytu bi-fulan' meaning I was alone with him.
ويقول الرجل للرجل: أخل معي حتى أكلمك، أي كن معي خاليا.
And a man says to another man: 'Be alone with me until I speak to you,' meaning be alone with me.
ووجدهما خلوين، بالكسر: أي خاليين.
And he found them both 'khulawain', with kasra: meaning empty.
أنت خلي من هذا الأمر، أي خال فارغ، وهو خلاف الشجي؛
You are 'khali' from this matter, meaning empty, devoid, and it is the opposite of 'al-shaji' (concerned);
ويل للشجي من الخلي؛ أي من الفارغ الذي لا هم له؛
Woe to the concerned from the unconcerned; meaning from the empty one who has no worries;
والخلي: من لا زوجة له فهو فارغ البال لا هم له.
And 'al-khali': he who has no wife, so he is carefree with no worries.
والخلو، بالكسر: الخلي أيضا؛ وهي خلوة وخلو، ج أخلاء.
And 'al-khulu', with kasra: is also 'al-khali'; and it is 'khulwah' and 'khulu', plural 'akhlaa'.
أنت خلو من مصيبتي، أي فارغ البال منها.
You are 'khulu' from my affliction, meaning carefree from it.
هو خلو من هذا الأمر، أي خال، وقيل: أي خارج، وهما خلو وهم خلو.
He is 'khulu' from this matter, meaning empty, and it is said: meaning outside, and they are 'khulu' and they are 'khulu'.
هما خلوان من هذا الأمر وهم خلاء، وليس بالوجه.
They are 'khullawan' from this matter and they are 'khulaa'', and it is not the preferred way.
والخالي العزب الذي لا زوجة له؛
And 'al-khali' is the bachelor who has no wife;
ألم ترني أصبي على المرء عرسه وأمنع عرسي أن يزن بها الخالي؟
Have you not seen me tempting a man's wife and preventing my wife from being tempted by the bachelor?
والخلية والخلي: ما يعسل فيه النحل من غيره ما يعالج لها من العسالات.
And 'al-khaliyyah' and 'al-khali': what the bees store honey in, other than what is prepared for them from honeycombs.
أو خشبة تنقر ليعسل فيها وجمع الخلية الخلايا، وشاهد الخلي قول الشاعر:
Or a piece of wood that is hollowed out for honey to be stored in, and the plural of 'al-khaliyyah' is 'al-khalaaya', and the witness for 'al-khali' is the poet's saying:
إذا ما تأرت بالخلي ابتنت به شريجين مما تأتري وتتيعشريجين أي ضربين من العسل..
When it (the bee) settled in the 'al-khali', it built two types of honey from what it gathered and collected.
والخلية من الإبل: المخلاة للحلب، أو التي عطفت على ولد ؛
And 'al-khaliyyah' of camels: the one prepared for milking, or the one that was affectionate towards a calf;
أو التي خلت من ولدها فسميت خلية لأنها لا ترضع ولدها ولا غيره)
Or the one that became empty of her calf, so she was named 'khaliyyah' because she does not nurse her calf nor another's)
وهي الناقة تنتج فينحر ولدها ساعة يولد قبل أن تشمه ويدنى منها ولد ناقة كانت ولدت قبلها فتعطف عليه، ثم ينظر إلى أغزر الناقتين فتجعل خلية، ولا يكون للحوار منها إلا قدر ما يدرها وتترك الأخرى للحوار يرضعها متى ما شاء وتسمى بشوطا، والجمع بشط، الغزيرة التي يتخلى بلبنها أهلها هي الخلية.
And it is the she-camel that gives birth, and her calf is slaughtered the moment it is born before she smells it, and the calf of a she-camel that gave birth before her is brought to her and she becomes affectionate towards it, then the more productive of the two she-camels is chosen and made 'khaliyyah', and the calf gets from her only enough to stimulate her milk, and the other is left for the calf to nurse whenever it wishes and is called 'bashwat', and the plural is 'bashat'. The productive one whose milk her family takes is 'al-khaliyyah'.
الخلية الناقة تعطف مع أخرى على ولد واحد فيدران عليه، ويتخلى أهل البيت بواحدة يحلبونها؛
The 'al-khaliyyah' is the she-camel that is made affectionate with another to one calf, and they both produce milk for it, and the household takes one of them to milk;
أمرت الراعيين ليكرماها لها لبن الخلية والصعودانتهى.
I ordered the two shepherds to honor her, she has the milk of 'al-khaliyyah' and the high-yielding ones.
أي يتفرغ هو تفسير ليتخلى وهو تفعل من الخلو، يقال تخلى للعبادة.
Meaning he becomes free, which is an explanation of 'yatakhalla', and it is from the pattern 'tafa'ala' from 'al-khulu', it is said 'takhalla li-l-'ibadah' (he dedicated himself to worship).
فإذا درت نحي الحوار واختليت، وربما جمعوا من الخلايا ثلاثا وأربعا، على حوار واحد وهو التلسن.
And when she produced milk, we removed the calf and 'ikhtalaytu' (became alone), and sometimes they gathered three or four from 'al-khalaaya' for one calf, and that is 'al-talisn'.
وإن من أمة إلا خلا فيها نذير؛ أي مضى وأرسل.
And there is no nation but that a warner has passed among them; meaning he passed and was sent.
والقرون الخالية: هم المواضي
And the past generations: they are the ones who have passed.
تزوجت امرأة قد خلا منها، أي كبرت ومضى معظم عمرها؛
I married a woman who had passed her prime, meaning she had grown old and most of her life had gone;
فلما خلا مني ونثرت له ذا بطني، تريد أنها كبرت وأولدت له.
And when I had passed my prime for him and delivered my offspring to him, meaning she had grown old and borne him children.
خلا عن الأمر ومنه: إذا تبرأ.
'Khala' 'an al-amr wa minhu': if he absolved himself.
خلا فلان إذا مات.
'Khala fulan' if he died.
خلا به إذا سخر منه؛
'Khala bihi' if he mocked him;
جاؤوني خلا زيدا، تنصب بها إذا جعلتها فعلا وتضمر فيها الفاعل كأنك قلت خلا من جاءني من زيد،
They came to me, 'khala' Zayd, you make it accusative if you make it a verb and imply the subject in it, as if you said 'khala' (was empty of) who came to me from Zayd,
ما أردت مساءتك خلا أني وعظتك، معناه إلا أني وعظتك؛
I did not intend to displease you 'khala' (except) that I advised you, meaning except that I advised you;
خلا الله لا أرجو سواك وإنما أعد عيالي شعبة من عيالكا
By God, I hope for no one but You, and I only count my dependents as a branch of Your dependents.
أنا منه فالج بن خلاوة، أي خلاء بريء؛
I am from him Falij bin Khalaawah, meaning empty, innocent;
بطن من تجيب وهو خلاوة بن معاوية بن جعفر بن أسامة بن سعد بن تجيب.
A branch of Tujeeb, and it is Khalaawah bin Mu'awiyah bin Ja'far bin Usamah bin Sa'd bin Tujeeb.

You are 'khaliyyah', and she would be divorced from him, and it is among the كنايات (euphemisms) in Islam, so if he intended divorce by it, it would occur.
خلية طالق، فقال ذلك، فقال عمر: خذ بيدها فإنها امرأتك لما لم تكن نيته الطلاق، وإنما غالطته بلفظ يشبه لفظ الطلاق.
'Khaliyyah' (free) and divorced, so he said that, and 'Umar said: Take her hand, for she is your wife, because he did not intend divorce, but rather he tricked her with a word that resembles the word of divorce.
كأنك ظبية كأنك حمامة؛ فقالت: لا أرضى حتى تقول: خلية طالق،
As if you were a gazelle, as if you were a dove; so she said: I will not be satisfied until you say: 'Khaliyyah' (free) and divorced,
يكب الخلية ذات القلاع وقد كاد جؤجؤها ينحطم
It capsizes the 'al-khaliyyah' with its high sides, and its breastplate was almost broken.
كأن حدوج المالكية غدوة خلايا سفين بالنواصف من دد
As if the litters of the Maliki women in the morning were like ships' 'khalaaya' in the middle of Dadd.
