And al-ḥawāyā: are twisted depressions that rainwater fills, and it remains in them for a long time.

ويسميها العرب الأمعاء تشبيها بحوايا البطن يستنقع فيها الماء

And the Arabs call them intestines, by analogy with the intestines of the belly where water collects.

وهو أن يعمدوا إلى الصفا فيحوون له ترابا وحجارة تحبس عليهم الماء

And it is that they go to the rock and gather soil and stones around it that retain water for them.
