أبو زوجها ومن كان من قبله كالأخ وغيره.
The father of her husband and whoever was from his lineage, like his brother and others.
والأنثى حماة وهي أم زوجها، لا لغة فيها غير هذه؛
And the female is 'hamah', which is the mother of her husband; there is no other variant for it;
وحمو الرجل: أبو امرأته أو أخوها أو عمها، أو الأحماء من قبلها خاصة، والأختان من قبل الرجل، والصهر يجمع ذلك كله.
And the 'hamu' of a man is his wife's father, or her brother, or her uncle, or specifically the 'ahmaa'' from her side, and the 'akhtaan' from his side, and 'al-ṣihr' encompasses all of that.
وكل شيء من قبل الزوج مثل الأب والأخ فهم الأحماء واحدها حما ففيه أربع لغات حما مثل قفا، وحمو مثل أبو، وحم مثل أب، وحمء ساكنة الميم مهموزة، عن الفراء، وأنشد:
And everything from the husband's side, like the father and brother, they are the 'ahmaa'', the singular of which is 'hama', and it has four variants: 'hama' like 'qafa', 'hamu' like 'abu', 'hamm' like 'ab', and 'ham' with a silent mim and hamza, from Al-Farra', and he recited:
قلت لبواب لديه دارها تيذن فإني حمؤها وجارهاويروى: حمها، بترك الهمزة.
I said to the doorkeeper of the house where she resides, 'Admit me, for I am her father-in-law and her neighbor.' And it is narrated: 'hamaha', omitting the hamza.
وأصل حم حمو بالتحريك، لأن جمعه أحماء مثل آباء، وقد ذكرنا في الأخ أن حمو من الأسماء التي لا تكون موحدة إلا مضافة، وقد جاء في الشعر مفردا؛
And the origin of 'hamm' is 'hamuw' with vowelization, because its plural is 'ahmaa'' like 'aabaa'', and we have mentioned under 'brother' that 'hamu' is among the names that are not used singularly except when in an إضافة construction, and it has appeared in poetry singularly;
هي ما كنتي وتز عم أني لها حم
She is my wife, and you know that I am her father-in-law.
والأحماء من قبل الزوج، والأختان من قبل المرأة؛
And the 'ahmaa'' are from the husband's side, and the 'akhtaan' are from the wife's side;
وعلى هذا الترتيب العباس وعلي وحمزة وجعفر أحماء عائشة، رضي الله عنهم أجمعين.
And in this order, Al-Abbas, Ali, Hamza, and Ja'far were the 'ahmaa'' of Aisha, may God be pleased with them all.
فقيل: أصهار فلان قوم زوجته، وأحماء فلانه قوم زوجها.
It was said: 'Aṣhaar' of so-and-so are the people of his wife, and 'ahmaa'' of so-and-so are the people of his husband.
سبي الحماة وابهتي عليها ثم اضربي بالود مرفقيها
Capture the mother-in-law, and be proud of her, then strike her elbows with affection.
وفي الحديث: (لا يحلون رجل بمغيبة وإن قيل حموها ألا حموها الموت).
And in the Hadith: (They do not make a man permissible in her absence, even if it is said, 'Her father-in-law, is he not her father-in-law, death?').
قال ابن الأعرابي: أي خلوة الحمو معها أشد من غيره من الغرباء لأنه ربما حسن لها أشياء وحملها على أمور تنقل عن الزوج من التماس ما ليس في وسعه أو سوء عشرة أو غير ذلك، لأن الزوج لا يؤثر أن يطلع الحم على باطن حاله بدخول بيته.
Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Meaning, the seclusion of the father-in-law with her is more severe than with other strangers because he might make desirable to her certain things and lead her to matters that deviate from the husband, such as seeking what is beyond his capacity, or bad companionship, or other things, because the husband does not like the father-in-law to know the inner state of his affairs by entering his home.
كأنه ذهب إلى أن الفساد الذي يجري بين المرأة وأحمائها أشد من فساد يكون بينها وبين الغريب، ولذلك جعله كالموت.
It is as if he meant that the corruption that occurs between a woman and her in-laws is more severe than corruption that occurs between her and a stranger, and therefore he likened it to death.
يقال: اشتد حمي الشمس وحموها بمعنى؛
It is said: The heat of the sun intensified, and 'hamuha' in the same sense;
والحماة: عضلة الساق؛
And 'al-hamah': the muscle of the calf;
وفي ساق الفرس الحماتان، وهما اللحمتان اللتان في عرض الساق تريان كالعصبتين من ظاهر وباطن؛
And in the leg of a horse are the 'al-hamataan', which are the two muscles on the side of the leg that appear like two sinews from the outside and inside;
