Al-Jawahiri said: Dhu al-Thudiyyah is the nickname of a man named Tharmalah. Whoever says the breast is masculine says they only added the haa in the diminutive because its meaning is 'hand', and that is because his hand was short, the measure of a breast. This is indicated by the fact that they used to say both Dhu al-Yadiyyah and Dhu al-Thudiyyah for him, end quote.
وقيل: كأنه أراد قطعة من ثدي، وقيل: هو تصغير الثندوة، بحذف النون، لأنها من تركيب الثدي وانقلاب الياء فيها واوا لضمة ما قبلها، ولم يضر ارتكاب الوزن الشاذ لظهور الاشتقاق.
It was said: It is as if he meant a piece of breast. It was said: It is the diminutive of 'al-thandwah', by omitting the noon, because it is from the composition of the breast and the inversion of the yaa into a waw due to the vowel before it, and the deviation from the irregular meter did not harm the clarity of the derivation.
وذو الثدية أيضا: لقب عمرو بن ود العامري، قتيل علي بن أبي طالب، كرم الله وجهه؛ كان فارس قريش يوم الخندق، قتل وهو ابن مائة وأربعين سنة في قصة مشهورة في كتب السير.
And Dhu al-Thudiyyah also: is the nickname of Amr ibn Abd Wudd al-Amiri, the one killed by Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah honor his face; he was the knight of Quraysh on the day of the Trench, and he was killed at the age of one hundred and forty years in a famous story in the books of سیر (biographies).

And in Al-Sihah: having large breasts; he said it is not said of a man 'athdā'; meaning it is 'fa'lā'' and not 'af'al' for it, because this does not occur in men.
ويقال: ثَدِيَ يَثْدِي، كَرَضِيَ: ابْتَلَّ.
And it is said: thadiya yathdi, like radhiya: it became wet.
وقد ثَدَاهُ، كَدَعَاهُ ورَمَاهُ، يَثْدُوهُ ويَثْدِيهِ: بَلَّهُ.
And he thaddāhu, like da'āhu and ramāhu, yathdūhu and yathdīhi: he moistened it.

قال أبو عبيدة: وكان رؤبة يهمز الثندوة وسية القوس، قال: والعرب لا تهمز واحداً منهما؛ نقله الجوهري.
Abu Ubaydah said: And Ru'bah used to hamzate 'al-thandwah' and 'siya al-qaws' (the string of the bow), he said: And the Arabs do not hamzate either of them; Al-Jawahiri transmitted this.
