جرى على خلاف قواعده فإنه وزن الفعل برضي فدل على أنه مكسور الماضي مفتوح المضارع، ثم أتبعه بالمضارع فدل على أنه كضرب، والثاني لا قائل به، فهي زيادة مفسدة.
He acted contrary to his rules, for he weighed the verb with 'radi', indicating the past tense was broken and the present tense open, then he followed it with the present tense, indicating it was like 'daraba'. The latter is not held by anyone, so it is a corrupt addition.
قال الجوهري: إن كسرتها قصرت، وإن فتحتها مددت.
Al-Jawhari said: If you put a kasra on it, it is short; if you put a fatha, it is long.
ومثله القرى والقراء والصلى والصلاء.
And similar to it are 'al-qura' and 'al-qurra'' and 'al-sala' and 'al-salaa''.
والمرء يبليه بلاء السربال كر الليالي واختلاف الأحوال
And man is worn out by the wear of the garment, like the passing of nights and the change of circumstances.
ويقال للمجد: أبل ويخلف الله.
And it is said of glory: it wears out, and God replaces it.
بلاء السربال، أي إبلاء السربال، أو فيبلى بلاء السربال.
The wear of the garment, meaning the causing of the garment to wear out, or that the garment wears out.
وقائلة هذا العجير تقلبت به أبطن بلينه وظهوررأتني تجاذبت العداة ومن يكن فتى عام عام عام فهو كبيروأنشد ابن الأعرابي: قلوصان عوجاوان بلى عليهما دؤوب السرى ثم اقتداح الهواجر
And one who said: This Al-Ujayr has been turned over by its insides and outsides. The enemies pulled me, and whoever is a young man of a year is old. Ibn Al-A'rabi narrated: Two crooked she-camels, the journey has worn them out, then the striking of sparks in the heat of noon.
وفلان بلي أسفار وبلوها: أي بلاه الهم والسفر والتجارب
And so-and-so is worn out by travels and their wear: meaning worry, travel, and experiences have worn him out.
ناقة بلو سفر وبلي سفر للتي قد أبلاها السفر؛ والجمع أبلاء
A camel that is 'balu safar' and 'bili safar' is one whose travel has worn it out; and the plural is 'ablaa''.
ومنزل من الأنيس نائي شبيه لون الأرض بالسماء داويته برجع أبلاء
And a distant watering place, similar in color to the earth and sky, I treated it with the return of the worn-out ones.
ورجل بلي شر أو خير وبلوه: أي قوي عليه مبتلى به.
And a man worn out by evil or good, and his endurance: meaning he is strong against it, tested by it.
وهو بلو وبلي من أبلاء المال: أي قيم عليه؛ يقال ذلك للراعي الحسن الرعية، وكذلك هو حبل من أحبالها، وعسل من أعسالها؛ وزر من أزرارها
And he is 'balu' and 'bili' from the worn-out things of wealth: meaning he is in charge of it; this is said of a shepherd who tends his flock well, and likewise it is a rope from its ropes, and honey from its honeycombs; and a button from its buttons.
فصادفت أعصل من أبلائها يعجبه النزع إلى ظمائها
So I encountered a difficult one from its worn-out ones, who liked to draw towards its thirst.
وهو بذي بلى، كحتى، الجارة، وإلا الاستثنائية، ورضي ويكسر، وبليان، محركة، وبذي بليان، بكسرتين مشددة الثالث
And it is 'bidhi balaa', like 'hatta', the preposition, and 'illa', the exception, and 'radi' and its broken form, and 'bilyan', vocalized, and 'bidhi bilyan', with two kasras, the third is stressed.
تنـام ويذهب الأقوام حتى يقال أتوا على ذي بليان
He sleeps and people pass by until it is said they have passed over a place of great distance.
ولكن ذاك إذا كان الناس بذي بلي وذي بلى
But that is when people are scattered in different directions and in different groups.
قال أبو عبيد: أراد تفرق الناس وأن يكونوا طوائف وفرقا مع غير إمام يجمعهم، وكذلك كل من بعد عنك حتى لا تعرف موضعه فهو بذي بلي، وجعل اشتقاقه من بل الأرض: إذا ذهب، أراد ضياع أمور الناس بعده
Abu Ubaid said: He meant the scattering of people into groups and factions without a leader to unite them. Likewise, anyone who is far from you until you do not know his location is 'bidhi bali', and he derived it from 'bala al-ard': meaning it went away, intending the loss of people's affairs after him.
وفلان بذي بلي وذي بليان إذا كان ضائعا بعيدا عن أهله.
And so-and-so is 'bidhi bali' and 'bidhi bilyan' if he is lost and far from his family.
الناقة التي يموت ربها فتشد عند قبره فلا تعلف ولا تسقى حتى تموت جوعا وعطشا، أو يحفر لها وتترك فيها إلى أن تموت، لأنهم كانوا يقولون: صاحبها يحشر عليها
The she-camel whose owner dies, and she is tied at his grave and not fed or watered until she dies of hunger and thirst, or a pit is dug for her and she is left in it until she dies, because they used to say: her owner will be resurrected upon her.
كانوا يزعمون أن الناس يحشرون ركبانا على البلايا، ومشاة إذا لم تعكس مطاياهم عند قبورهم
They used to claim that people would be resurrected riding on the 'balaya', and walking if their mounts were not brought to their graves.
كانوا في الجاهلية يعقرون عند القبر بقرة أو ناقة أو شاة ويسمون العقيرة! البلية.
In the pre-Islamic era, they would slaughter a cow, camel, or sheep at the grave and call the sacrifice 'al-baliyyah'.
باتت وباتوا كبلايا الأبلاء مطلنفئين عندها كالأطلاء
She spent the night, and they spent the night, like the worn-out she-camels of the worn-out ones, resting near them like infants.
وقوله: وقد بليت إنما مرجع ضميره إلى الحلبة لا إلى البلية كما زعمه المصنف، فتأمل ذلك.
And his saying: 'And it became worn out', its pronoun refers to the race, not to the sacrificial animal as the author claimed, so ponder that.
وهو ابن عمرو بن الحافي بن قضاعة، منهم في الصحابة، ومن بعدهم خلق كثير ينسبون هكذا.
And he is the son of Amr ibn Al-Hafi ibn Quda'ah, among them are companions, and many after them are attributed this way.

A place in the Maghreb.
اختبرته وجربته.
I tested him and tried him.
واستخبرته فأخبرني
And I asked him for information, and he informed me.
أبلى بمعنى أخبر؛ ومنه حديث حذيفة: (لا أبلي أحدا بعدك أبدا)، أي لا أخبر، وأصله من قولهم: أبليت فلانا يمينا.
Ably means to inform; and from it is the hadith of Hudhayfah: (I will never inform anyone after you), meaning I will not inform, and its origin is from their saying: I made so-and-so swear an oath.
امتحنته واختبرته؛ هكذا في النسخ والصواب: اخترته؛ ومنه حديث حذيفة: (أنه أقيمت الصلاة فتدافعوها فتقدم حديفة فلما سلم من صلاته قال: لتبتلن لها إماما أو لتصلن وحدانا)
I tested him and examined him; thus in the copies and the correct version is: I chose him; and from it is the hadith of Hudhayfah: (The prayer was established, and they hesitated to lead it, so Hudhayfah stepped forward. When he finished his prayer, he said: You will surely be tested to lead it, or you will pray alone).
قال شمر: أي لتختارن لها إماما، وأصل الابتلاء الاختبار؛
Shammar said: Meaning you will choose an imam for it, and the origin of 'ibtilaa'' is testing;
وكبلوته بلوا وبلاء.
And I tested him with 'balwa' and 'balaa''.
وإذا قيل ابتلى فلان كذا! وأبلاه فذلك يتضمن أمرين: أحدهما: تعرف حاله والوقوف على ما يجهل من أمره؛ والثاني: ظهور جودته ورداءته، وربما قصد به الأمران، وربما يقصد به أحدهما، فإذا قيل في الله بلى كذا أو ابتلاه، فليس المراد منه إلا ظهور جودته ورداءته دون التعرف لحاله والوقوف على ما يجهل منه، إذ كان الله علام الغيوب، وعلى هذا قوله تعالى: {وإذا ابتلى إبراهيم ربه بكلمات فأتمهن}.
And if it is said: So-and-so was tested with such-and-such! And God tested him, that includes two things: First: knowing his condition and understanding what is unknown about him; Second: the manifestation of his quality, good or bad. Sometimes both are intended, and sometimes one of them is intended. So if it is said about God: God did such-and-such, or tested him, then what is meant is only the manifestation of his quality, good or bad, without knowing his condition and understanding what is unknown about him, since God is the Knower of the unseen. And according to this is His saying: {And when his Lord tested Abraham with certain words, and he fulfilled them}.
والاسم البلوى والبلية، كغنية؛ كذا بخط الصقلي في نسخة الصحاح، وبخط أبي زكريا البلية بالكسر؛ والبلوة، بالكسر كما في الصحاح أيضا، وجمع بعينهما ابن سيده زاد: والبلاء.
And the noun is 'al-bulwa' and 'al-baliyyah', like 'ghiniyah'; thus in Al-Siqilli's handwriting in a copy of Al-Sihah, and in Abu Zakariyya's handwriting 'al-baliyyah' with a kasra; and 'al-bulwah', with a kasra as in Al-Sihah also, and Ibn Sidah collected both, adding: and 'al-balaa''.
والبلاء: الغم كأنه يبلي الجسم
And 'al-balaa'': sorrow, as if it wears out the body.
والتكليف بلاء من أوجه، لأنه شاق على البدن، فصار بهذا الوجه بلاء، أو لأنه اختبار، ولهذا قال تعالى: {ولنبلونكم حتى نعلم المجاهدين منكم والصابرين}؛ أو لأن اختبار الله العباد تارة بالمسار ليشكروا وتارة بالمضار ليصبروا.
And 'takleef' (burden) is a trial in some ways, because it is hard on the body, so it becomes a trial in this way, or because it is a test. For this reason, God Almighty said: {And We will surely test you until We make evident those among you who strive in battle and those who are patient}; or because God tests His servants sometimes with ease so they may be grateful, and sometimes with hardship so they may be patient.
البلاء يكون منحة ويكون محنة، فالمحنة مقتضية للصبر، والمنحة أعظم البلاءين.
A trial can be a gift and it can be an affliction. Affliction necessitates patience, and a gift is the greater of the two trials.
بلينا بالضراء فصبرنا! وبلينا بالسراء فلم نصبر
We were tested with hardship and we were patient! And we were tested with ease and we were not patient.
من وسع عليه دنياه فلم يعلم أنه مكر به فهو مخدوع عن عقله
Whoever has his worldly life expanded and does not know that he is being deceived is deluded in his intellect.
ونبلوكم بالشر والخير فتنة؛ - وليبلي المؤمنين منه بلاء حسنا
And We test you with evil and good as a trial; - and that God may test the believers with a good test.
وفي ذلكم بلاء من ربكم عظيم
And in that is a great trial from your Lord.
وآتيناهم من الآيات ما فيه بلاء مبين
And We gave them of the signs that which contained a clear trial.
نزلت بلاء على الكفار، كقطام، أي البلاء
A trial descended upon the disbelievers, like 'qattama', meaning the trial.
أداه إليه فقبله؛ وقيل: بين وجه العذر ليزيل عنه اللوم؛ وكذلك أبلاه جهده ونائله.
He delivered it to him, and he accepted it; and it was said: he explained the reason for the excuse to remove blame from him; and likewise he showed him his effort and his bounty.
وحقيقته جعله باليا لعذره، أي خابرا له عالما بكنهه.
And its reality is making him worn out by his excuse, meaning knowing him and being aware of his essence.
أبل الله تعالى عذرا في برها
May God Almighty deliver an excuse for her good treatment.
أحلفه و أبلى الرجل: حلف له فطيب بها نفسه؛ قال الشاعر: وإني لأبلي الناس في حب غيرها فأما على جمل فإني لا أبلي
He made him swear, and 'ablay' the man: he swore to him and thus pleased him; the poet said: And indeed I swear to people about loving another, but as for Jamal, I do not swear.
أي أحلف للناس إذا قالوا هل تحب غيرها أني لا أحب غيرها، فأما عليها فإني لا أحلف؛ وقال أوس: كأن جديد الأرض يبليك عنهم تقي اليمين بعد عهدك حالف
Meaning I swear to people when they ask if you love another that I do not love another, but as for her, I do not swear; and Aws said: As if the newness of the earth wears you out from them, a pious oath after your time of swearing.
فأوجع الجنب وأعر الظهرا أو يبلي الله يمينا صبرا
So it pained the side and exposed the back, or God makes a patient oath wear out.
استحلف واستعرف؛ قال الشاعر: تبغي أباها في الرفاق وتبتلي وأودى به في لجة البحر تمسح
He asked for an oath and inquired; the poet said: You seek your father among the companions and test them, and he was lost in the midst of the sea.
أي تسألهم أن يحلفوا لها، وتقول لهم: ناشدتكم الله هل تعرفون لأبي خبرا؟
Meaning you ask them to swear to her, and you say to them: I adjure you by God, do you know any news of my father?
ما أكترث له.
I do not care about it.
وتبقى حثالة لا يباليهم الله بالة
And dregs will remain whom God does not care about at all.
هؤلاء في الجنة ولا أبالي وهؤلاء في النار ولا أبالي.
These are in Paradise and I do not care, and these are in Hell and I do not care.
وقيل لا أباليه: قلب لا أباوله من البال أي لا أخطره ببالي ولا ألقي إليه بالا.
And it is said 'la ubaalihi': a heart that does not 'ubaawiluhu' from the 'baal', meaning I do not bring it to my mind, nor do I pay attention to it.
وشوقا لا يبالي العين بالا
And a longing that does not make the eye pay attention.
لم أبال ولم أبل، حذفوا الألف تخفيفا لكثرة الاستعمال، كما حذفوا الياء من قولهم لا أدر، وكذلك يفعلون في المصدر فيقولون ما أباليه بالة، والأصل بالية، مثل عافاه الله عافية، حذفوا الياء منها بناء على قولهم لم أبل، وليس من باب الطاعة والجابة والطاقة
I did not care and I did not wear out, they omitted the alif for brevity due to frequent use, just as they omitted the yaa' from their saying 'la adri'. Likewise, they do with the masdar, saying 'ma ubaalihi baalatan', and the original is 'baaliyah', like 'Aafahu Allah 'aafiyatan', they omitted the yaa' from it based on their saying 'lam abli', and it is not from the pattern of obedience, response, or ability.
