قال ابن الأثير: قال القتيبي يرويه أصحاب الحديث معوتها، قال: وذلك غلط لأن المعوة البسرة التي جرى فيها الإرطاب، قال: والصواب بغوتها، وهي ثمرة السمر أول ما تخرج ثم تصير بعد ذلك برمة ثم بلة ثم فتلة.

Ibn al-Athir said: Al-Qutaybi said, transmitted by the hadith scholars as 'ma'wataha', he said: 'And that is a mistake because al-ma'wah is the unripe date in which ripening has begun. He said: And the correct reading is 'baghwataha', which is the fruit of the Samr tree when it first emerges, then it becomes after that 'barmah', then 'ballah', then 'fatlah'.
