أصلها أية، بالتشديد، (وزنها فعلة بالفتح) قلبت الياء ألفا لانفتاح ما قبلها
Its origin is 'ayyah, with shadda, (its form is fa'lah with fatha) the ya was turned into an alif due to the preceding fathah.
قلب شاذ، كما قلبوها في حاري وطائي إلا أن ذلك قليل غير مقيس عليه
an irregular inversion, as they inverted it in haari and taa'i, except that this is rare and not based on analogy.
أو أصلها أوية وزنها (فعلة بالتحريك،)
Or its origin is 'awwiyah, its form is (fa'lah with harakah),
موضع العين من الآية واو، لأن ما كان موضع العين منه واو واللام ياء أكثر مما موضع العين واللام منه ياآن
the position of the 'ayn in 'ayah is waw, because what has waw in the position of the 'ayn and ya in the lam is more than what has ya in both the 'ayn and lam positions.
لم يذكر سيبويه أن عين آية واو كما ذكر الجوهري، وإنما قال: أصله أييه، فأبدلت الياء الساكنة ألفا
Sibawayh did not mention that the 'ayn of 'ayah is waw as Al-Jawhari mentioned, rather he said: its origin is 'ayyah, so the silent ya was replaced by an alif.
أجازه في النسب إلى الآية وآيي آئي وآوي؛ فأما أووي فلم يقله أحد علمته غير الجوهري
He permitted in the attribution to 'ayah 'aayiyi, 'aa'iyi, and 'aawiyi; as for 'aawiyi, no one I know said it except Al-Jawhari.
وإنما ذهبت منه اللام، ولو جاءت تامة، لجاءت آيية، ولكنها خففت
And only the lam went from it, and if it had come complete, it would have been 'aayiyah, but it was lightened.
فيه أربعة أقوال
There are four opinions on it.
إن الذاهب منها العين تخفيفا؛ وهو قول الكسائي؛ صيرت ياؤها الأولى ألفا كما فعل بحاجة وقامة، والأصل حائجة وقائمة
that the 'ayn is dropped from it for lightness; this is the saying of Al-Kisa'i; its first ya was made an alif as was done with haajah and qaamah, and the origin is haa'ijah and qaa'imah.
هذا خطأ لأن هذا لا يكون في أولاد الثلاثة، ولو كان كما قال لقيل في نواة وحياة نائه وحائه، قال: وهذا فاسد
This is an error because this does not happen in the derivatives of the triliteral, and if it were as he said, it would be said for 'nawatah' and 'hayaah' 'naa'atah' and 'haa'atah', he said: and this is corrupt.
لم يبق هذا الدهر من آيائه غير أثافيه وأرمدائه
This age has not left of its signs except its hearthstones and its ashes.
صوابه آياء، بالهمز، لأن الياء إذا وقعت طرفا بعد ألف زائدة قلبت همزة، وهو جمع آي لا آية، فتأمل ذلك
Its correctness is 'aayaa', with hamza, because when the ya occurs at the end after an added alif, it is turned into a hamza, and it is the plural of 'aay, not 'ayah, so ponder that.
لأن ظهور العين في آيائه دليل عليه، وذلك أن وزن آياي أفعال، ولو كانت العين واوا لقال آوائه، إذ لا مانع من ظهور الواو في هذا الموضع
because the appearance of the 'ayn in 'aayaa'ihi is evidence for it, and that is because the form of 'aayaayi is 'af'aal, and if the 'ayn were waw, it would have said 'aawaa'ihi, as there is no impediment to the waw appearing in this position.
الآية من الآيات والعبر، سميت آية كما قال تعالى: {لقد كان في يوسف وإخوته} آيات للسائلين} ، أي أمور وعبر مختلفة
The 'ayah' from the 'ayaat' and lessons, it is named 'ayah' as God Almighty said: {There were signs in Joseph and his brothers} for those who ask, meaning various matters and lessons.
وإنما تركت العرب همزتها لأنها كانت فيما يرى في الأصل أية، فثقل عليهم التشديد فأبدلوه ألفا لانفتاح ما قبل التشديد، كما قالوا أيما المعنى أما
And the Arabs abandoned its hamza because it was, as it appears, originally 'ayyah, so the shadda became heavy for them, and they replaced it with an alif due to the fathah before the shadda, as they said 'ayyamā' meaning 'ammā'.
وجعلنا ابن مريم وأمه آية
And We made the son of Mary and his mother a sign.
ولم يقل آيتين لأن المعنى فيهما آية واحدة
And He did not say 'two signs' because the meaning in them is one sign.
افعله بآية كذا، كما تقول بأمارة كذا
Do it by the sign of such-and-such, as you say by the mark of such-and-such.
الآية من القرآن: كلام متصل إلى انقطاعه
The 'ayah' from the Quran: connected speech until its interruption.
سميت آية لأنها علامة لانقطاع كلام من كلام
It is named 'ayah' because it is a sign of the interruption of one speech from another.
الآية العلامة الظاهرة، وحقيقته كل شيء ظاهر هو لازم لشيء لا يظهر ظهوره، فمتى أدرك مدرك الظاهر منهما علم أنه أدرك الآخر الذي لم يدركه بذاته إذا كان حكمهما واحدا
The 'ayah' is the apparent sign, and its reality is everything apparent that is necessary for something whose appearance is not apparent, so when an observer perceives the apparent of them, he knows that he has perceived the other which he did not perceive by itself, if their ruling is one.
وإيا الشمس، بالكسر والتخفيف والقصر، ويقال إياه بزيادة الهاء، وأياء كسحاب: شعاع الشمس وضوءها
And 'iyya the sun, with kasrah and lightening and shortening, and it is said 'iyyaahu with the addition of haa', and 'ayyaa' like sahaab: the sun's ray and its light.
لا وجه يظهر لتأخيرها وذكرها في الحروف مع أنها من الأسماء الخارجة عن معنى الحرفية من كل وجه محل نظر
There is no apparent reason for delaying it and mentioning it among the particles, although it is from the nouns that are outside the meaning of a particle in every aspect, which is subject to consideration.
تآييته، بالمد على تفاعلته، وتأييته، بالقصر: قصدت آيته، أي شخصه وتعمدته
Ta'ayyaytuhu, with madd on tafaa'altuhu, and Ta'ayyaytuhu, with qasr: I intended its 'ayah, meaning its person and I deliberately sought it.

So they intended a sharp-bladed spear, digging its sacred part, so he coughed.

ومناخ غير تئية عرسته قمن من الحدثان نابي المضجع

Ta'ayyaa al-rajul ta'ayyan: he proceeded deliberately in the matter.
وتأييت عليه ثانيا بيقيني بتليل ذي خصل
And I proceeded deliberately towards him a second time with my certainty, with the support of one with locks of hair.
معناه تثبت وتمكنت، وأنا عليه يعني على فرسه
Its meaning is to be firm and steady, and I am upon him, meaning upon his horse.

الآية: الجماعة؛ عن أبي عمرو
Al-Aayah: the group; from Abu Amr.
يقال: خرج القوم بآيتهم، أي بجماعتهم لم يدعوا وراءهم شيئا
It is said: the people went out with their company, meaning with their group, leaving nothing behind them.
خرجنا من النقبين لا حي مثلنا بآيتنا نزجي اللقاح المطافلا
We went out from the two passes, no tribe like us, with our company we drive the nursing camels.
الآية: الرسالة، وتستعمل بمعنى الدليل والمعجزة
