وهيه الذي ينحى.
And Hīh is one who is shunned.
هيه هيه لشيء يطرد ولا يطعم

فهيهات هيهات العقيق وأهله

وهيهات خل بالعقيق نحاوله
And how far away is a friend in Al-Aqiq whom we seek.
أيهات منك الحياة أيهاتا
Far away from you is life, oh so far.
ومن العرب من يقول: هيهان وأيهان.
And some of the Arabs say: Hīhān and Ayhān.
ومنهم من يقول: هايهات، بزيادة الألف في هيهات؛
And some of them say: Hāyhāta, with the addition of an alif to Hīhāta.
ومن كسر التاء وقف عليها بالهاء فيقولون هيهاه؛
And whoever pronounces the tā' with kasra, pauses on it with a hā', so they say Hīhāh.
ومن دوني الأعراض والقنع كله وكتمان أيها ما أشت وأبعدا
And beyond me are the high grounds and the entire covering, and concealing it, how far away it is and how remote.
فهي إحدى وخمسون لغة
So there are fifty-one languages.
يصبحن في القفر أتاويات هيهات من مصبحها
They wake up in the desert, weary, far from their morning place.
هيهات هيهات حجر من صنيبعات وأيهات
Far, far away is Hajar from Sunaybi'āt, and Ayhāt.
وهيهات خل بالعقيق نحاوله
And how far away is a friend in Al-Aqiq whom we seek.
إذا وصلت هيهات فدع التاء على حالها، وإذا وقفت فقل هيهاه
If you connect Hīhāta, leave the tā' as it is, and if you pause, say Hīhāh.
وهي كلمة معناها البعد لقولك: ومنه قوله تعالى: {هيهات هيهات لما توعدون}
And it is a word whose meaning is distance, as in your saying: And from it is His saying, the Almighty: {Far, far away is what you are promised}
هيهات هيهات، بكسر التاء غير منونة
Hīhāta Hīhāta, with kasra on the tā' without tanwin.
وقرأ عيسى بن عمر بالتنوين
And 'Īsā ibn 'Umar recited with tanwin.
وقرأ أبو حيوة: هيهات هيهات رفع منون
And Abū Ḥayywah recited: Hīhāta Hīhāta, raised and with tanwin.
وقرأ عيسى الهمداني هيهات هيهات مرسلة التاء.
And 'Īsā al-Hamadānī recited Hīhāta Hīhāta, with the tā' released.
ومن كسر فقال: هيهات منونا أو غير منون، فهو جمع هيهات، وأصله هيهيات إلا أنه حذف الألف لأنها في آخر اسم غير متمكن.
And whoever says it with kasra, then Hīhāta, whether with tanwin or without, is a plural of Hīhāta, and its origin is Hīhiyāt, except that the alif was omitted because it is at the end of an indefinite noun.
ومن فتح وقف بالهاء لأنها كهاء أرطاة وسعلاة،
And whoever pronounces it with fatha, pauses with a hā' because it is like the hā' of 'arṭāh and su'lāh.
ومن كسر كتبها بالتاء لأنها جماعة والكسرة في الجماعة بمنزلة الفتحة في الواحد،
And whoever says it with kasra writes it with a tā' because it is plural, and the kasra in the plural is like the fatha in the singular.
فإنه يحتمل أمرين: أحدهما أن يكون أخلصها اسما معربا فيه معنى البعد ولم يجعله اسما للفعل فيبنيه كما بنى الناس غيره؛
Then it is open to two interpretations: one is that he made it a declinable noun with the meaning of distance, and did not make it an adverb, thus making it indeclinable like others.
وأما هيهات هيهات ساكنة التاء فينبغي أن تكون جماعة وتكتب بالتاء وذلك أنها لو كانت هاء كهاء علقاة وسماناة للزم في الوقوف عليها أن يلفظ بالهاء كما يوقف مع الفتح فيقال هيهاه هيهاه
As for Hīhāta Hīhāta with a silent tā', it should be plural and written with a tā', because if it were a hā' like the hā' of 'allaqāh and samānāh, it would be necessary when pausing on it to pronounce the hā', just as one pauses with fatha, saying Hīhāh Hīhāh.
ويقال لشيء يطرد ولا يطعم: هيه هيه، بالكسر؛
And for something that is driven away and not fed, it is said: Hih hih, with kasra.
وهي كلمة استزادة أيضا بالكسر والفتح بمنزلة إيه وأيه.
And it is also a word for requesting more, with kasra and fatha, similar to 'īh and 'āh.
تقول للرجل: إيه وهيه، بغير تنوين، إذا استزدته من الحديث المعهود بينكما،
You say to a man: 'Īh and Hih, without tanwin, if you want him to continue the familiar conversation between you.
فإن نونت استزدته من حديث ما غير معهود.
If you use tanwin, you are asking him to continue a conversation that is not familiar.
