Its origin is 'lahah', as if the idol was named after it, meaning the snake, then the 'ha' was deleted from it.
وإنما قضينا بأن ألف لاهة، التي هي الحية، واو لأن العين واوا أكثر منها ياء
And we only judged that the 'alif' of 'lahah', which is the snake, is a 'waw' because the 'ayn' is more often a 'waw' than a 'ya'.
