ما علمت أحدا من العرب قال: إن النخيل والكروم ثمارها ليست من الفاكهة

I have not known any Arab to say that the fruits of palm trees and vines are not fruit.

والعرب تذكر الأشياء جملة ثم تخص منها شيئا بالتسمية تنبيها على فضل فيه.

And the Arabs mention things generally, then single out something by name to indicate its superiority.

من كان عدوا لله وملائكته ورسله وجبريل وميكال

Whoever is an enemy to Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael.

فمن قال: إن جبريل وميكال ليسا من الملائكة لإفراد الله، عز وجل إياهما بالتسمية بعد ذكر الملائكة جملة فهو كافر

So whoever says that Gabriel and Michael are not angels because Allah, the Almighty, singled them out by name after mentioning angels generally, then he is an infidel.

ومن قال إن ثمر النخل والرمان ليس فاكهة لإفراد الله تعالى إياهما بالتسمية بعد ذكر الملائكة جملة فهو جاهل

And whoever says that the fruit of palm trees and pomegranates is not fruit because Allah, the Almighty, singled them out by name after mentioning angels generally, then he is ignorant.

فأما النقل فلأن العطف يقتضي المغايرة

As for the transmission, it is because conjunction implies difference.

وأما العقل فلأن الفكهة ما يتفكه به ويتلذذ من غير قصد الغذاء أو الدواء

As for reason, it is because 'fakiha' is that by which one takes pleasure and enjoys, without the intention of nourishment or medicine.

ولا شك أن التمر من جملة أنواع الغذاء، والرمان من جملة أصناف الدواء.

And there is no doubt that dates are among the types of food, and pomegranates are among the kinds of medicine.

ولا يقال لبائع الفاكهة فكاه كما لبان ونبال

And one does not say 'fakkah' for a fruit seller, as one says 'labban' for a milk seller and 'nabbāl' for an arrow maker.

الفَاكِه الذي كَثُرَتْ فاكِهَتُهُ.

The 'fākih' is one who has abundant fruit.

وفَكِهَهُم تَفْكِيهاً: أتاهم بها.

And 'fakihahum tafkīhan': to bring them fruit.

فَكِهْهُم بِمِلْحِ الكلامِ تَفْكِيهاً: إذا أطرفهم بها

To 'fakihhum bi-milḥ al-kalām tafkīhan': if you entertain them with it (witty speech).

والاسم الفكيهة، كسفينة، والفكاهة، بالضم

And the noun is 'al-fakīhah', like 'safīnah', and 'al-fikāhah', with dammah.

وقد فكه الرجل، كفرح فكها بالتحريك، وفكاهة

And the man 'fakaha', like 'fariḥa', 'fakahan' (with harakat), and 'fikāhatan'.

فهو فكه وفاكه: أي طيب النفس ضحوك مزاح.

So he is 'fakiḥ' and 'fākih': meaning cheerful, laughing, and jesting.

He was among the most cheerful of people with a child.

كان من أفكه الناس إذا خلا مع أهله.

He was among the most cheerful of people when he was alone with his family.

أو رجل فكه: يحدث صحبه فيضحكهم.

Or a 'fakiḥ' man: he tells stories to his companions and makes them laugh.

And 'fakihah minhu': to be amazed by it.

في شغل فكهون

In amusement they are delighted.

فظلتم تفكهون

And you remained in amazement.

وتفكه: تجنب عن الفاكهة، فهو ضد.

And 'tafakaha': to avoid fruit, so he is its opposite.

And 'al-ufkūhah': the wonder.

جاء فلان بأفكوهة وأملوحة.

So-and-so came with a wonder and a witty remark.

A she-camel with sparse milk.

أفكهت الناقة إذا أدرت عند أكل الربيع قبل النتاج، فهي مفكه

The she-camel 'afkahat' if she produces milk upon eating spring herbage before calving, then she is 'mufakkah'.

إذا رأيت في لبنها خثورة شبه اللبإ.

If you see thickness in her milk resembling colostrum.

إذا أقربت فاسترخى صلواها وعظم ضرعها ودنا نتاجها

When she is near calving, her backbone loosens, her udder enlarges, and her birth approaches.

بني عمنا لا تبعثوا الحرب إننيأرى الحرب أمست مفكها قد أصنت

Sons of my uncles, do not incite war, for I see war has become its cause, having been silenced.

مفكهة أدنت على رأس الولدقد أقربت نتجا وحان أن تلد

A 'mufakkahah' (she-camel) nearing the head of the offspring, she has approached birth and it is time for her to deliver.

تقول إذا استهلكت مالا للذةفكيهة هشيء بكفيك لائق

She says when she has spent wealth for pleasure: 'Fakīhah, is there something suitable in your hands?'

هو فكه بأعراض الناس، ككتف: أي يتلذذ باغتيابهم.

He is 'fakiḥ' with the reputations of people, like 'katif': meaning he takes pleasure in backbiting them.

تهكم، أي تجعلون فاكهتكم قولكم {إنا لمغرمون}

Mockery, meaning you make your 'fruit' your saying: {Indeed, we are afflicted}.

فالتفككه هنا تناول الفاكهة غير أنه أخرجه على سبيل التهكم.

So 'tafakkuh' here means eating fruit, but he expressed it as a form of mockery.

أو تفكه هنا بمعنى: ألقى الفاكهة عن نفسه وتجنب عنها

Or 'tafakaha' here means: he cast fruit away from himself and avoided it.

رجل فيكهان: طيب النفس مزاح

A 'faykihān' man: cheerful and jesting.

إذا فيكهان ذو ملاء ولمة قليل الأذى فيما يرى الناس مسلم.

If a 'faykihān' with abundance and a lock of hair, causes little harm in what people see as Muslim.

نسوة فكهات: طيبات النفوس.

Women 'fakiḥāt': cheerful of spirit.

وتفكه: تعاطى الفكاهة، وأيضا: تناول الفاكهة

And 'tafakaha': to engage in humor, and also: to eat fruit.

تركت القوم يتفكهون بفلان: أي يغتابونه وينالون منه

I left the people to 'tafakkah' with so-and-so: meaning they backbite him and speak ill of him.

هم الذين يشتمونهن ممازحين.

They are those who insult them jokingly.
