And in Al-Sihah: every tree that is large and has thorns, and it is of two types: pure and impure; the pure are Al-Ghurf, Al-'Arfata, Al-Talh, Al-Salm, Al-Sidr, Al-Siyal, Al-Samr, Al-Yanbut, Al-Qatad Al-A'dham, Al-Kunhabal, Al-Gharb, and Al-'Awsaj; and what is not pure are Al-Shawhat, Al-Nab', Al-Shariyan, Al-Sarra', Al-Nasham, Al-'Ajram, and Al-Ta'allub. These are called 'adhaaah, the plural of qaws (bow). And what is small of thorny trees is 'add. And what is neither 'add nor 'adhaaah of thorny trees are Al-Shaka'i, Al-Halaawi, Al-Hadha, Al-Kab, and Al-Salj.
إذا مات منهم ميت سرق ابنه ومن عضة ما ينبتن شكيرها
If one of them dies, his son is stolen from the 'adhaaah of what its suckers grow.
والشكير ما ينبت في أصل الشجرة.
And Al-Shukayr is what grows at the base of the tree.
فإن عضة المحذوفة يصلح أن تكون من الهاء فيما نراه من تصاريف هذه الكلمة كقولهم عضاه وإبل عاضهة، وأما استدلاله على كونها من الواو فبقولهم عضوات؛ قال: وأنشد سيبويه: هذا طريق يأزم المآزما وعضوات تقطع اللهازما
For the 'adhaaah with the deleted haa' can be from the haa' in the derivations of this word that we see, like their saying 'adhaaah and 'aadhah camels. As for his argument for it being from waw, it is by their saying 'adhaaawaat; he said: And Sibawayh recited: This is a path that constricts the constricted, and 'adhaaawaat that cut the loins.
وإنما انقلبت ياء للمجاورة وبه تعلم أن ما نسبه شيخنا إلى المصنف من التخليط في غير محله.
And the yaa' was inverted due to proximity, and by this you learn that what our shaykh attributed to the author of confusion is misplaced.
بعير عضوي وإبل عضوية، بفتح العين على غير قياس عند من يقول نقصانها الواو؛ كما في الصحاح.
An 'adhuwwi camel and 'adhuwwiyyah camels, with fath on the 'ayn, which is irregular according to those who say its deficiency is waw; as in Al-Sihah.
وأما العضاهي والعضاهية فإما أن يكون منسوبا إلى عضة فهو من شاذ النسب، وإن كان منسوبا إلى العضاه فهو مردود إلى واحدها، وواحدها عضاهة، ولا يكون منسوبا إلى العضاه الذي هو الجمع، لأن هذا الجمع وإن أشبه الواحد فهو في معناه جمع، ألا ترى أن من أضاف إلى تمر فقال تمري لم ينسب إلى تمر إنما نسب إلى تمرة، وحذف الهاء لأن ياء النسب وهاء التأنيث يتعاقبان.
As for 'adhaahee and 'adhaaahiyyah, it is either attributed to 'adhaaah, which is an irregular attribution, or if it is attributed to 'adhaaah (the plural), it is referred back to its singular, and its singular is 'adhaaahah. It is not attributed to 'adhaaah (the plural) because although this plural resembles a singular, it is a plural in meaning. Do you not see that whoever attributes to dates and says 'tamree' (my dates), he is not attributing to the collective 'tamr' (dates) but to the singular 'tamrah' (a date)? And the haa' is deleted because the yaa' of attribution and the taa' marbuta of femininity alternate.
وناقة عاضهة وعاضه: ترعاها، وجمال عواضه؛ وقد عضهت عضها.
And an 'aadhaaah and 'aadhaaah she-camel: grazes on it, and 'awaadh camel herds; and she has grazed on 'adhaaah.
لا يقال بعير عاضه للذي يرعى العضاه، وإنما يقال له عضه، وأما العاضه فهو الذي يشتكي عن أكل العضاه.
It is not said 'ba'eer 'aadhaaah' for one that grazes on thorny plants; rather, it is called 'adhaaah. As for 'al-'aadhaaah, it is one who complains from eating thorny plants.
وأرض عضهة، كفرحة، وعضيهة، كسفينة، ومعضهة، كمحسنة: ذات عضاه، أو كثيرتها؛ وقد أعضهت؛ نقله الجوهري.
And 'adhaaah land, like 'afrihah, and 'adheeha, like safeenah, and ma'dhaaah, like muhsinah: possessing thorny plants, or abundant with them; and it has become thorny; this is narrated by Al-Jawhari.

وسمي السحر عضها لأنه كذب وتخييل لا حقيقة له.
And sorcery is called 'adhaaah because it is a lie and illusion with no reality.
والعضه السحر، بلغة قريش، وهم يقولون للساحر عاضه.
And 'al-'adhaaah is sorcery, in the dialect of Quraysh, and they call a sorcerer 'aadhaaah.
وأيضا: نم؛ وقيل: بهت، ومنه الحديث: إياكم والعضه: أتدرون ما العضه، وهي النميمة.
And also: gossip; and it is said: slander. And from it is the hadith: Beware of 'al-'adhaaah: Do you know what 'al-'adhaaah is? It is gossip.
والعضه، كعنب؛ الكذب والبهتان؛ نقله الجوهري عن الكسائي، قال ابن بري؛ قال الطوسي؛ هذا تصحيف وإنما الكذب العضه، وكذلك العضيهة.
And 'al-'adhaaah, like 'anab; lying and slander; this is narrated by Al-Jawhari from Al-Kisa'i. Ibn Barr says: Al-Tusi says: This is a misspelling, and indeed lying is 'al-'adhaaah, and so is 'al-'adheeha.
والعضه؛ السحر والكهانة بلغة قريس، والفعل كالفعل والمصدر كالمصدر، وقال: أعود بربي من النافثات في عضه العاضه المعضهو
And 'al-'adhaaah; sorcery and divination in the dialect of Quraysh, and the verb is like the verb, and the masdar is like the masdar. And he said: I seek refuge in my Lord from the blowers in the sorcery of the sorcerer.
وروى في عقد العاضه، وهي رواية الجوهري.
And it is narrated in 'iqd al-'aadhaaah, which is the narration of Al-Jawhari.
ج العضة عضون، كعزة وعزين، ومنه قوله تعالى: {الذين جعلوا القرآن عضين}.
The plural of 'al-'adhaaah is 'adhaaown, like 'izzah and 'izzeen. And from it is His saying, the Almighty: {Those who made the Quran 'idheen (sects)}.
وقال الفراء؛ العضون في كلام العرب السحر، وجعله من العضه، ونقصانه الهاء وأصله عضهة، فاستثقلوا الجمع بين هاءين فقالوا: عضة، كشفة وسنة، ويقال؛ واحدها عضة وأصلها عضوة من عضيت الشيء؛ إذا فرقته، جعلوا النقصان الواو، المعنى أنهم فرقوا يعني المشركين أقاويلهم في القرآن فجعلوه كذبا وسحرا وشعرا وكهانة وقد نقل الجوهري القولين ولا تخليط في كلام المصنف كما زعمه شيخنا.
And Al-Farra' said: 'Al-'adhaaown in the speech of the Arabs is sorcery, and he made it from 'al-'adhaaah, and its deficiency is the haa', and its origin is 'adhaaahah. So they found it burdensome to combine two haa's, so they said 'adhaaah, like shaffah and sanah. And it is said: its singular is 'adhaaah, and its origin is 'adhuwwah from 'adheetu the thing; meaning I divided it. They made the deficiency waw. The meaning is that they (i.e., the polytheists) divided their sayings about the Quran, making it lies, sorcery, poetry, and divination. Al-Jawhari has narrated both opinions, and there is no confusion in the author's words as our shaykh claimed.
والعاضه؛ الساحر، بلغة قريش عن الأصمعي وغيره.
And 'al-'aadhaaah; the sorcerer, in the dialect of Quraysh, according to Al-Asma'i and others.
عضهه عضها: شتمه صريحا، ومنه الحديث: من تعزى بعزاء الجاهلية فاعضهوه)، وفي رواية أخرى: فأعضوه بهن أمه) كما في الروض.
'Adhdhahahu 'adhaaah: he insulted him directly. And from it is the hadith: Whoever claims lineage with the lineage of ignorance, then insult him), and in another narration: then insult him with his mother) as in Al-Rawd.
وبينهم عضه قبيحة: أي قالة.
And between them is an ugly 'adhaaah: meaning gossip.
ويقال؛ يا للعضيهة، كسرت اللام على معنى اعجبوا لهذه العضيهة، يقال ذلك عند التعجب من الإفك العطيم، فإذا نصبت اللام فمعناه الاستغاثة.
And it is said: 'Ya lil-'adheehati', with the laam kasra, meaning 'Be amazed at this 'adheehati'. This is said when marveling at great falsehood. If the laam is fathah, its meaning is seeking help.
والمستعضهة؛ المستسحرة، ومنه الحديث؛ (لعن العاضهة والمستعضهة).
And 'al-musta'dhihah; the bewitched one. And from it is the hadith: (May the sorceress and the bewitched one be cursed).
فلان ينتجب غير عضاهه؛ إذا انتحل شعر غيره، وأنشد الجوهري: يا أيها الزاعم أني أجتلبوأنني غير عضاهي أنتجب كذبت إن شر ما قيل الكذب
So-and-so claims lineage other than his own; meaning he falsely claims someone else's poetry. And Al-Jawhari recited: O you who claim that I gather, and that I claim lineage other than my own. You have lied, for the worst of what is said is lies.
