He attacked them, as in 'man'a', with a 'darahan': he attacked from where they did not expect him, like 'dar'a', according to Ibn al-A'rabi.
وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: دَرِهَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِذَا طَلَعَ، وَهُوَ مِثْلُ هَجَمَ.
And others said: 'daraha 'alayhim' means he appeared, which is like 'hajama' (attacked).
وَدَرِهَ عَنْهُمْ وَلَهُمْ، وَعَلَى الأَوَّلِ اقْتَصَرَ الجَوْهَرِيُّ، دَفْعٌ، مِثْلُ دَرَأَ، وَهُوَ مُبْدَلٌ مِنْهُ، مِثْلُ هَرَاقَ وَأَرَاقَ، كَمَا فِي الصَّحَاحِ.
And he repelled from them and for them, and Al-Jauhari limited himself to the first meaning, meaning 'daf'a' (to repel), like 'dar'a', and it is a substitute for it, like 'haraqa' and 'araqa', as in Al-Sihah.
وَدَارِهَاتُ الدَّهْرِ: هَوَاجِمُهُ؛ عَنِ ابْنِ الأَعْرَابِيِّ، وَأَنْشَدَ:
And 'darahat al-dahr' means its sudden attacks; from Ibn al-A'rabi, and he recited:
وَالمِدْرَهُ، كَمِنْبَرٍ: السَّيِّدُ الشَّرِيفُ، سُمِّيَ بِذَلِكَ لِأَنَّهُ يُقَوِّي عَلَى الأُمُورِ وَيَهْجِمُ عَلَيْهَا؛ عَنِ ابْنِ سِيدَه.
And 'al-midrah', like 'minbar': the noble lord, so named because he is strong and capable of confronting matters and attacking them; from Ibn Sidah.
وَأَيْضًا: المُقَدَّمُ فِي اللِّسَانِ وَاليَدِ عِنْدَ الخُصُومَةِ وَالقِتَالِ؛ فِيهِ لَفٌّ وَنَشْرٌ مُرَتَّبٌ.
And also: the one who leads in speech and action during dispute and combat; in it is a connected arrangement.
وَقَالَ اللَّيْثُ: أُمِيتَ فِعْلُهُ إِلَّا قَوْلَهُمْ رَجُلٌ مِدْرَهُ حَرْبٍ، وَمِدْرَهُ القَوْمِ هُوَ الدَّافِعُ عَنْهُمْ.
And Al-Laith said: its verb is obsolete except for their saying 'a man who is a 'midrah' of war', and the 'midrah' of a people is the one who defends them.
وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: مِدْرَهُ القَوْمِ زَعِيمُهُمْ وَخَطِيبُهُمْ وَالمُتَكَلِّمُ عَنْهُمْ وَالدَّافِعُ عَنْهُمْ، وَالجَمْعُ مَدَارِهُ؛
And others said: the 'midrah' of a people is their leader, their orator, the one who speaks for them, and the one who defends them, and the plural is 'madarih'.
وَيُقَالُ: هُوَ ذُو تَدَرُّهٍ وَتَدَرْؤُهُ إِذَا كَانَ هَجَّامًا عَلَى أَعْدَائِهِ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ.
And it is said: he is 'dhu taderruhin wa tader'u'ihi' if he is an attacker of his enemies from where they do not perceive.
وَيُقَالُ: الهَاءُ فِي كُلِّ ذَلِكَ مُبْدَلَةٌ مِنَ الهَمْزَةِ لِأَنَّ الدَّرْءَ الدَّفْعُ.
And it is said: the 'ha' in all of that is a substitution for the hamza because 'al-dar'u' means 'al-daf'u' (repelling).
وَرَدَّهُ ابْنُ سِيدَه وَقَالَ: بَلْ هُمَا لُغَتَانِ.
And Ibn Sidah refuted him and said: rather, they are two languages.
وَدَرَّهَ عَلَى كَذَا تَدْرِيهًا: نَيَّفَ.
And 'darraha 'ala kadha tadrihan': he exceeded.
وَدَرِهَهُ فُلَانٌ فُلَانًا: تَنَكَّرَ لَهُ.
And 'darahahu fulan fulanan': so-and-so was hostile towards so-and-so.
وَالدَّرْهَرَهَةُ: الكَوْكَبَةُ الوَقَّادَةُ تَطْلُعُ مِنَ الأُفُقِ دَارِئَةً بِنُورِهَا؛ عَنْ أَبِي عَمْرٍو.
And 'al-darharhah': the shining star cluster that appears from the horizon, repelling with its light; from Abu Amr.
وَالدَّرْهُ: الإِقْدَامُ.
And 'al-darhu': boldness, daring.
وَسِكِّينٌ دَرْهَرَهَةٌ: مُعْوَجَّةُ الرَّأْسِ الَّتِي تُسَمِّيهَا العَامَّةُ المِنْجَلَ؛
And a 'dharharhah' knife: one with a curved head, which the common people call a sickle;
وَالدَّرْهَرَهَةُ: المَرْأَةُ القَاهِرَةُ لِبَعْلِهَا؛ عَنِ أَبِي عُمَرَ.
And 'al-darharhah': the woman who is dominant over her husband; from Abu Umar.
وَالدَّارَةُ: البَرَّاقُ؛ اسْتَدْرَكَهُ شَيْخُنَا.
And 'al-darah': the swift one; our shaykh added this.
وَتَدَرَّهَ: تَهَدَّدَ؛ عَنِ ابْنِ الأَعْرَابِيِّ؛ وَأَنْشَدَ:
And 'tadarrhaha': he threatened; from Ibn al-A'rabi; and he recited:
وَدُرِّيُّ القَوْمِ، كَسِكِّيتٍ: كَبِيرُهُمْ.
And 'durriyyu al-qawm', like 'sikkīt': their elder.
وَالدَّارَةُ: الطُّفَيْلِيُّ وَالرَّسُولُ أَيْضًا؛ كُلُّ ذَلِكَ عَنِ الصَّاغَانِيِّ.
And 'al-darah': the freeloader and the messenger also; all of that is from Al-Sagani.
