قال ابن جني: كان سبيل جاه، إذ قدمت الجيم وأخرت الواو، أن يكون جوه فتسكن الواو كما كانت الجيم في وجه ساكنة إلا أنها تحركت لأن الكلمة لما لحقها القلب ضعفت فغيروها بتحريك ما كان ساكنا إذ صارت بالقلب قابلة للتغير، فصار التقدير جوه، فلما تحركت الواو وقبلها فتحة قلبت ألفا، فقيل جاه.

Ibn Jinni said: The path of 'Jah' (prestige), when the 'Jim' was brought forward and the 'Waw' was delayed, would be 'Jauh', so the 'Waw' would be quiescent as the 'Jim' was in 'Wajh' (face) quiescent, except that it became vocalized because when the word underwent inversion it weakened, so they changed it by vocalizing what was quiescent, as it became susceptible to change by inversion. So the estimation became 'Jauh', and when the 'Waw' became vocalized and preceded by a fatha, it was inverted to an 'Alif', so it was said 'Jah'.

وحكى اللحياني أن جاه ليس من وجه، وإنما هو من جهت ولم يفسر ما جهت.

Al-Lihyani narrated that 'Jah' is not from 'Wajh' (face), but rather from 'Jahat', and he did not explain what 'Jahat' means.

وقال أبو بكر: لفلان جاه فيهم، أي منزلة وقدر، فأخرت الواو من موضع الفاء وجعلت في موضع العين فصارت جوها، ثم جعلوا الواو ألفا فقالوا جاه.

Abu Bakr said: So-and-so has 'Jah' among them, meaning status and prestige. The 'Waw' was delayed from the position of the 'Fa' and placed in the position of the 'Ain', becoming 'Jauha', then they made the 'Waw' an 'Alif' and said 'Jah'.

وجاهه بمكروه جوها: جبهه به

And to confront him with something unpleasant ('Jauha') means to confront him with it ('Jabaha bihi').

ويقال: نظر بجوه سوء، بالضم، وبجيه سوء، أي بوجه سوء

And it is said: he looked with a bad face ('bijauhi su''), with damma, and with a bad face ('bijayhi su''), meaning with a bad face ('biwajhi su'').

وقوله: بجيه، مقتضى إطلاقه أنه بفتح الجيم، وهو في نص النوادر بكسرها.

And his saying: 'bijayhi', its implication is that it is with a fatha on the Jim, but in the text of 'Al-Nawadir' it is with a kasra.

And 'Jah Jah', built on kasra, and it can be used with tanwin.

إذا قلت جاه لج حتى تردهقوى أدم أطرافها في السلاسل

If you say 'Jah' (hush), it stops until you bring it back, strong hides have their extremities in chains.

And 'Wujuh' ('Jauh'), built on kasra: is a call for a male camel, not a female camel.

تقول العرب للإبل جاه لا جهت، وهو زجر للجمل خاصة.
