Indeed, the origin of spontaneity and improvisation in speech, and its prevalence in poetry, is without deliberation and thought.
وَإِنَّ الِارْتِجَالَ أَسْرَعُ مِنَ الْبَدِيهَةِ وَالرَّوِيَّةِ بَعْدَهُمَا
And improvisation is faster than spontaneity and deliberation after them.
أَجَابَ عَلَى الْبَدِيهَةِ
He answered spontaneously.
أَيْ أَوَّلَ مَا يُفْجَأُ بِهِ
Meaning, the first thing he is surprised by.
وَلَهُ بَدَائِعُ فِي الْكَلَامِ وَالشِّعْرِ وَالْجَوَابِ

أَيْ بَدَائِعُ كَأَنَّهُ جَمْعُ بَدِيهَةٍ
Meaning, 'badāʼiʻ' as if it were the plural of 'badīhah'.
وَلَا يَبْعُدُ أَنْ تَكُونَ الْهَاءُ بَدَلًا مِنَ الْعَيْنِ
And it is not unlikely that the 'hāʼ' is a substitute for the 'ʻayn'.
هَذَا مَعْلُومٌ فِي بَدَائِهِ الْعُقُولِ
This is known in the innate understandings of minds.
ابْتَدِهْ الخُطْبَةَ إِذَا ارْتَجَلَهَا
Improvise the speech if you deliver it extemporaneously.
وَهُمْ يَتَبَادَهُونَ الخُطَبَ يَرْتَجِلُونَهَا

وَالتَّفَاعُلُ لَيْسَ عَلَى حَقِيقَتِهِ
And the 'tafāʻul' pattern is not literal.
هُمَا يَتَبَادَهَانِ بِالشِّعْرِ أَيْ يَتَجَارَيَانِ
