And if you say 'ih' with tanwin, it is as if you said 'bring some story'.

إذا عنيت بها المعرفة لم تنون، وإذا عنيت بها النكرة نونت

If you mean the definite, you do not add tanwin, and if you mean the indefinite, you add tanwin.

فقلنا إيه عن أم سالم

So we said 'ih 'an Umm Salim'.

إذا قلت: إيها عنا، (بالنصب) فإنما تأمره بالسكوت والكف

If you say: 'iha 'anna' (with accusative), you are only commanding him to be silent and cease.

تركتها وقد أحجن ثمامها وأعذق إذخرها وأمشر سلمها

I left it, and its thumam had become abundant, its idhkhir had borne fruit, and its sallam had produced fruit.

فقال: إيها أصيل دع القلوب تقر، أي كف واسكت.

So he said: 'iha, Asil, let the hearts be at ease', meaning 'cease and be silent'.

إيها فدى لكم أمي وما ولدت

Iha, may my mother and what she bore be a ransom for you.

تقول في الأمر إيه افعل، وفي النهي: إيها عني الآن، أي كف.

You say in command: 'ih, do it', and in prohibition: 'iha 'anni al-an' (stop from me now), meaning 'cease'.

وأيه بالبعير تأييها: صاح به وناداه

And 'ayyah' to a camel, 'ta'yiha': to shout at it and call it.

إني أؤيه بها كما يؤيه بالخيل فتجيبني

Indeed, I call to them (souls) as one calls to horses, and they respond to me.

وهو أن يقول لها ياه ياه

And it is to say to it 'yah yah'.

بحور لا مسقى ولا مؤيه

Seas, not watered and not called to.

إذا دعاه وناداه كأنه قال له: يا أيها الرجل.

If he calls him and summons him, as if he said to him: 'O man'.

وأيهان، كسحبان، وتكسر نونها

And 'ayhan', like 'sahban', and its nun is sometimes broken.

وأيها، بحذف النون نقله الجوهري

And 'ayha', with the omission of the nun, as transmitted by Al-Jauhari.

وأيهات، نقله الجوهري أيضا، كل ذلك لغات في هيهات.

And beyond me are the impostors and all pretense, and the concealment of 'ayha' (distance) is what I endure and am far from.

قال ثعلب: يقال أيهان ذلك أي بعيد ذلك.

Thaalab said: It is said 'ayhan dhalika', meaning 'that is far'.

وأيهك بمعنى ويهك.

And 'ayhak' meaning 'wayhak'.

وقد ترد المنصوبة بمعنى التصديق والرضا بالشيء

And the accusative form may occur meaning confirmation and satisfaction with something.

فقال: إيها والإله أي صدقت ورضيت بذلك

So he said: 'iha wal-ilah' (yes, by God), meaning 'you have spoken the truth and I am pleased with that'.

ويروى: إيه، بالكسر، أي زدني من هذه المنقبة.

And it is narrated: 'ih', with kasra, meaning 'increase me in this merit'.
