ومكن الضباب طعام العريبولا تشتهيه نفوس العجم
And the eggs of the dabbah are food for the Arabs, which the souls of the non-Arabs do not desire.
واحدته مكنة ومكنة
Its singular is 'maknah' and 'maknah'.
إذا جمعت البيض في جوفها
When it gathered the eggs in its belly.
فهي مكون
And it is 'mukawwin' (egg-laying).
فهي ممكن
And it is 'mumkin' (egg-laying).
أراد رفيقي أن أصيده ضبة مكونا ومن خير الضباب مكونها
My companion wanted me to hunt a dabbah that had laid its eggs, and among the best of dabbahs is one that has laid its eggs.
وقيل: الضبة المكون التي على بيضها
And it is said: The 'mukawwin' dabbah is the one that has its eggs.
أي بيضها
Meaning its eggs.
على أنه مستعار لها من الضبة، لأن المكن ليس للطير
As if it were borrowed for them from the dabbah, because 'makn' is not for birds.
أي بيض الضباب
Meaning the eggs of the dabbah.
وجائز في كلام العرب أن يستعار مكن الضباب فيجعل للطير على التشبيه
And it is permissible in Arabic speech to borrow 'makn' of the dabbah and apply it to birds by analogy.
أي لا تزجروا الطير ولا تلتفتوا إليها، أقروها على مواضعها التي جعلها الله لها
Meaning: Do not scare the birds away, nor pay attention to them; leave them in their places which God has made for them.
أي ذو مكنة من السلطان، أي ذو تمكن
Meaning: Possessing 'maknah' from the ruler, meaning possessing firm establishment.
أقروا الطير على كل مكنة ترونها عليها ودعوا التطير منها
Leave the birds in every place you see them and refrain from divination by them.
لأن المكنة إنما هي بمعنى التمكن، فسمي موضع الطير مكنة لتمكنه فيه
Because 'maknah' is essentially in the sense of firm establishment, so the bird's place is called 'maknah' due to its being established in it.
جمع مكن ومكن جمع مكان كصعدات في صعد وحمرات في حمر
Plural of 'makn' and 'makn', a plural of 'makan' like 'sa'adat' for 'sa'ad' and 'hamarat' for 'humr'.
كان الرجل في الجاهلية إذا أراد الحاجة أتى الطير ساقطا أو في وكره فنفره، فإن أخذ ذات اليمين مضى لحاجته، وإن أخذ ذات الشمال رجع، فنهى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عن ذلك
In the pre-Islamic era, if a man wanted to do something, he would go to a bird, and if it flew away or was in its nest, he would disturb it. If it flew to the right, he would proceed with his need, and if it flew to the left, he would return. The Prophet, peace be upon him, forbade that.
والقول في معنى الحديث ما قاله الشافعي، وهو الصحيح وإليه كان يذهب ابن عيينة
And the interpretation of the hadith is what Al-Shafi'i said, and it is the correct view, which Ibn Uyaynah also held.
وقد تمكن (كالمكينة)
And he became firmly established (like 'makinah').
مر على مكانته على أي تؤدته
He proceeded with his deliberation, meaning with his unhurriedness.
امش على مكينتك ومكانتك وهينتك
Walk with your deliberation, your calmness, and your gentleness.
فلان يعمل على مكينته، أي اتئاده
So-and-so works with his deliberation, meaning his unhurriedness.
اعملوا على مكانتكم
Work according to your position.
أي على حيالكم وناحيتكم
Meaning: according to your circumstances and your direction.
وقيل: معناه على ما أنتم عليه مستمكنون
And it was said: Its meaning is according to what you are firmly established upon.
في قلبه مكانة وموقعة ومحلة
In his heart is a position, a place, and a dwelling.
المنزلة عند ملك
The status with a king.
فهو مكين بين المكانة
So he is 'makin' (firmly established) with great status.
ما يقبل الحركات الثلاث
Which accepts the three case endings.
إنه معرب كعمر وإبراهيم
It means it is inflected like 'Umar' and 'Ibrahim'.
وغير المتمكن هو المبني كقولك كيف وأين
And the non-inflected is the indeclinable, like your saying 'kayfa' and 'ayna'.
أنه يستعمل مرة ظرفا ومرة اسما
That it is used once as an adverb and once as a noun.
وهو الذي لا يستعمل في موضع يصلح أن يكون ظرفا إلا ظرفا
And it is that which is not used in a position suitable for an adverb except as an adverb.
الموضع الحاوي للشيء
The place containing the thing.
وهو اجتماع جسمين حاو ومحوي
And it is the meeting of two bodies, a container and a contained.
كقذال وأقذلة
Like 'qadhal' and 'aqdhal'.
كن مكانك، وقم مكانك، فقد دل هذا على أنه مصدر من كان أو موضع منه
Stay in your place, and stand in your place. This indicates that it is a masdar from 'kana' or a place from it.
فشبهوها بفعالة وهي مفعلة من النور، وكان حكمه مناور، كما قيل مسيل وأمسلة ومسل ومسلان
So they likened it to 'fa'alah', which is 'muf'alah' from 'nur'. Its rule would have been 'manawir', as 'masil' and 'amsalah' and 'masl' and 'maslan' were said.
ينبت على هيئة ورق الهندبا بعض ورقه فوق بعض، وهو كثيف وزهرته صفراء، ومنبته القنان ولا صيور له، وهو أبطأ عشب الربيع وذلك لمكان لينه
It grows in the form of chicory leaves, some of its leaves on top of others, and it is dense and its flower is yellow. Its place of growth is the mountains, and it has no thorns. It is the slowest of the spring grasses, and that is due to the place of its softness.
وإذا أكلته الماشية غزرت عليه فكثرت ألبانها وخثرت
And if the livestock eat it, their milk production increases and thickens.
واحدته بهاء
Its singular is 'bahaa'.
وبالروض مكنان كأن حديقهزرابي وشتها أكف الصوانع
And in the meadow is 'maknan' as if its garden were carpets woven by the hands of artisans.
ومجر منتحر الطلي تناوحتفيه الظباء ببطن واد ممكن
And a flowing stream of the first rain, where gazelles grazed in the belly of a fertile valley.
تحسر الماء عنه واستجن به إلفان جنا من المكنان والقطب
The water receded from it, and two companions sought refuge in it, one from the 'maknan' and the other from the 'qutb'.
نوح بن ربيعة البصري تابعي
Nuḥ ibn Rabīʿah al-Baṣrī, a Tabi'i.
روى عن أبي مجلز وعكرمة، وعنه وكيع والقطان، ثقة
He narrated from Abu Mijlaz and Ikrimah, and from him narrated Waqi' and al-Qattan; he is trustworthy.
روى عن إياس بن الحارث بن معيقب الدوسي، وعنه سهل بن حماد الدلال
He narrated from Iyās ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Muʿayqib al-Dawsī, and from him narrated Sahl ibn Ḥammād al-Dallāl.
يروي عن جده معيقب بن أبي فاطمة الدوسي حليف قريش، وعنه أبو مكين
He narrates from his grandfather Muʿayqib ibn Abī Fāṭimah al-Dawsī, an ally of Quraysh, and from him Abu Makin.
إذا ظفر به
When he gained control over it.
والاسم من كل ذلك المكانة
And the noun from all of that is 'al-makanah'.
ويقال أمكنني الأمر، فهو ممكن
And it is said: The matter became possible for me, so it is possible.
ولا يقال: أنا أمكنه بمعنى أستطيعه
And it is not said: I can do it, meaning I am able to.
ولا يقال: أنت تمكن الصعود إليه
And it is not said: You can ascend to it.
ضباب مكان، بالكسر، جمع المكون
Dabbahs of 'makan', with kasra, plural of 'mukawwin'.
وقال تعلم أنها صفرية مكان بما فيها الدبى وجنادبه
And he said: Know that it is a yellow one of 'makan', with the locusts and their larvae within it.
ويجمع المكان على مكن، بضمتين، عن الزمخشري
And 'makan' is pluralized as 'makn', with two dammahs, according to Al-Zamakhshari.
والناس على سكناتهم ونزلاتهم ومكناتهم: أي مقارهم
And people are in their dwellings, their lodgings, and their resting places: meaning their abodes.
هو من مجاز المجاز
It is from a metaphorical usage of a metaphor.
وما أمكنه عند الأمير، شاذ
And 'ma amkanahu 'inda al-amir' (what he could get from the prince) is irregular.
حيث تثنى الماء فيه فمكن
Where the water was abundant in it, so he was able to.
فعلى هذا يكون ما أمكنه على القياس
So according to this, 'ma amkanahu' would be according to the rule.
لما تمكن دنياهم أطاعهمفي أي نحو يميلوا دينه يمل
When they were firmly established in their worldly affairs, they obeyed him; in whatever direction they inclined, they would follow his religion.
مكانك، تحذره شيئا من خلفه
Your place! You warn him of something behind him.
وفلان لا يمكنه النهوض، أي لا يقدر عليه
And so-and-so cannot stand up, meaning he is not able to.
والتمكين عند الصوفية مقام الرسوخ والاستقرار على الاستقامة
And 'tamkin' among the Sufis is a station of deep-rootedness and stability in uprightness.
بنو المكين: قوم من العلويين باليمن
Banu al-Makin: A group of Alawites in Yemen.
وماكيان: جد محمد بن علي الماكياني السرخسي عن ابن أبي الدنيا
Makyan: Grandfather of Muhammad ibn Ali al-Makyani al-Sarakhsi, from Ibn Abi al-Dunya.
وماكينة: جد إبراهيم بن إبراهيم الماكيني روى عنه أبو زرعة ووثقه
Makina: Grandfather of Ibrahim ibn Ibrahim al-Makini, Abu Zur'ah narrated from him and authenticated him.
