And Mujahid said: meaning He has purified them.
وقال أبو عبيدة: أي صفاها وهذبها.
And Abu Ubaidah said: meaning He has clarified and refined them.
وقال غيره: أي وطأها وذللها.
And others said: meaning He has made them accustomed and subdued.
والمحن، بالفتح: (اللين من كل شيء)
And al-mihan, with the fatha: softness from everything.
من المجاز: المحن: (أن تدأب يومك أجمع في المشي أو غيره.
And from figurative speech: al-mihan: to exert yourself all day in walking or something else.
والمحونة: المحق والبخس
And al-ma'unah: deficiency and being shortchanged.
فذلك الشهيد الممتحن في جنة الله تحت عرشه
That is the tested martyr in Allah's paradise under His throne.
وهو الصفي المهذب.
And he is the chosen, refined one.
والممتحن أيضا: الموطأ المذلل.
And al-mumtahan also means: the accustomed, the subdued.
وامتحن الذهب والفضة: أذابهما ليختبرهما حتى يخلصا.
And testing gold and silver means melting them to examine them until they are purified.
ومحن السوط: لينه.
And softening a whip means making it pliable.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: محنه بالشد والعدو: وهو التليين بالطرد.
And Ibn al-A'rabi said: to soften it by chasing and running, which is making it pliable by pursuit.
وجلد ممتحن: مقشور
And a peeled skin: scraped.
وثوب ممحون: خلق بطول اللبس.
And a worn-out garment: one that has become old from long wear.
ومحنت ناقتي: جهدتها بالسير.
And I exhausted my she-camel: I strained her with travel.
والمحونة: العار والتباعة
And al-ma'unah: shame and consequence.
لأن العار أشد المحن
Because shame is the most severe of hardships.
والممحون: المأبون؛ عامية.
And al-mam'un: effeminate; a colloquial term.
