Fatin bihi, ilayhi, wa lahu, like fariha, nasara, and karuma; it has also been transmitted as transitive by itself. They said: fatanahu, because it implies the meaning of fahima (to understand).
فهو فاطن له.
So he is aware of it.
وقيل: الفطانة جودة استعداد الذهن لإدراك ما يرد عليه من الغير.
And it was said: Al-fatanah is the excellent readiness of the mind to perceive what comes to it from others.
ورجل فطين وفطون وفطن؛ ككتف، وفطن، كندس، وفطن، كعدل؛
And a man is fatin, fatun, and fatin; like katif, and fatin, like kundas, and fatin, like 'adl;
قال القطامي: إلى خدب سبط ستينيطب بذات قرعها فطون
Al-Qutami said: To a slender, smooth-skinned she-camel, sixty years old, with her hooves striking, she is fatun (perceptive).
وقال الآخر: قالت كنت رجلا فطيناهذا لعمر الله إسرائينا
And another said: She said, 'You were a man of understanding, by God, this is Isra'in.'
لا يفطنون لعيب جارهموهم لحفظ جواره فطن
They do not perceive their neighbor's fault, yet they are perceptive to protect his vicinity.
وهي فطنة.
And she is fatinah (intelligent).
وأما الفطن فذو فطنة للأشياء؛ قال: ولا يمتنع كل فعل من النعوت من أن يقال قد فعل وفطن صار فطنا إلا القليل.
As for al-fatan, it is one possessing fitnah for things; he said: And not every verb derived from attributes is prevented from being said as 'he did' and 'fatin became fatan', except for a few.
إذا فاطنتنا في الحديث تهزهزتإليها قلوب دونهن الجوانح
When we converse with each other in talk, hearts flutter towards her, though they are separated by the ribs.
والتفطين: التفهيم. يقال: فطنه لهذا الأمر: أي فهمه.
And al-taftin is making understand. It is said: fatanahu li-hadha al-amr: meaning, he made him understand it.
ومنه المثل: لا يفطن القارة إلا الحجارة، القارة: أنثى الذئبة.
And from it is the proverb: Only stones make the female wolf aware; Al-qarah is a female wolf.
تفطن لما يقال: أي فهم بسرعة الذهن.
Tafattana lima yuqal: meaning, to understand with the speed of the mind.
وفطنه المعلم: رده فطنا بتأديبه وتثقيفه.
And the teacher made him fatin: he returned him to being intelligent through his discipline and refinement.
