And Al-Layth said: The meaning of 'ma'atin al-ibil' in the hadith is: their places;
وأنشد: ولا تكلفني نفسي ولا هلعيح‌رصا أقيم به في معطن الهون
And he recited: And my soul and my panic do not burden me with a desire to stay in a place of humiliation.
وقال ابن السكيت: وتقول هذا عطن الغنم ومعطنها لمرابضها حول الماء.
And Ibn Al-Sikkit said: And you say this is the 'atan' of the sheep and their 'mi'tan' for their pens around the water.
وقال الأزهري: أعطان الإبل ومعاطنها لا تكون إلا مباركها على الماء، وفيه تعريض على الليث حيث فسر المعاطن بالمواضع.
And Al-Azhari said: The 'a'tan' and 'ma'atin' of camels are only their resting places at the water, and in this there is an implicit criticism of Al-Layth where he interpreted 'ma'atin' as places.
وإنما نهى عن الصلاة في أعطان الإبل، لأن الإبل تزدحم في المنهل، فإذا شربت رفعت رؤوسها، ولا يؤمن من نفارها في ذلك الموضع، فتؤذي المصلي عندها أو تلهيه عن صلاته، أو تنجسه برشاش أبوالها.
He only prohibited praying in the watering places of camels because camels crowd at the watering source, and when they drink they raise their heads, and one cannot be safe from their stampeding in that place, so they might harm the worshipper near them or distract him from his prayer, or defile him with splashes of their urine.
وعطن الذبان في قمقامها لم يفسره ثعلب، وقد يجوز أن يكون (عطن تعطينا: اتخذه)، كقولك: عشش الطائر إذا اتخذ غشا.
And 'Atan al-dhubban' in their depths was not explained by Tha'lab, and it is possible that it means (he took it as a resting place): he made it his own, like you say 'a bird nested' when it made a nest.
وعطنت الإبل عن الماء، ككنصر وضرب، عطونا، وعطنت، بالتشديد، فهي عاطنة، من إبل عواطن وعطون، بالضم، ولا يقال إبل عطان، رويت ثم بركت؛
And the camels watered at the water, like 'nasara' and 'daraba', they became 'atana', and they became 'aṭṭana', with emphasis, so they are 'a'itinah', of camels that are 'awa'itin' and 'uṭun', with damma, and it is not said 'ibil 'attan', they drank their fill then lay down;
قال كعب يصف الحمر: ويشربن من بارد قد علمنبأن لا دخال ولا عطونا
Ka'b said, describing the wild asses: And they drink from cold water, having learned that there is neither entry nor lingering.
وأعطنها: سقاها ثم أناخها و حبسها عند الماء فبركت بعد الورود لتعود فتشرب، قال لبيد، رضي الله تعالى عنه: عافتا الماء فلم نعطنهماإنما يعطن أصحاب العلل
And he watered them and made them lie down and kept them at the water so they would lie down after drinking to return and drink again, Labid said, may God Almighty be pleased with him: They both refused the water, so we did not make them linger at it; only those with ailments linger.

Or it is returning her to the watering place to wait because she did not drink at first, then the water is offered to her a second time, or it is that she is satiated, then left, as in the manuscripts, and the correct reading is: then she lies down.
وإنما تعطن العرب الإبل على الماء حين تطلع الثريا وترجع الناس من النجع إلى المحاضر، وإنما يعطنون النعم يوم ورودها، فلا يزالون كذلك إلى وقت مطلع سهيل في الخريف، ثم لا يعطنونها بعد ذلك، ولكنها ترد الماء فتشرب شربتها وتصدر عن الماء.
The Arabs only make camels rest at the water when the Pleiades rise and people return from the pastures to their settlements, and they only make the livestock rest on the day they arrive, and they continue to do so until the rising of Suhail in autumn, then they do not make them rest after that, but they return to the water and drink their fill and depart from the water.

So it is putrid, or water was sprinkled on it, wrapped, and buried for a day and a night, so its wool, or hair, softened for plucking and then thrown into the tanning solution, and it is then at its most putrid.
وقال أبو زيد: عطن الأديم إذا أنتن وسقط صوفه في العطن، والعطن: أن يجعل في الدباغ.
And Abu Zayd said: The hide became putrid when it became foul and its wool fell off in the tanning process, and 'al-'atan' is placing it in the tanning solution.
وقال أبو حنيفة: العطن: الجلد استرخى صوفه من غير أن يفسد،
And Abu Hanifa said: 'Al-'atan' is the hide whose wool has softened without becoming spoiled,
وعطنه يعطنه ويعطنه فهو معطون وعطين وعطنه، بالتشديد: إذا فعل به ذلك.
And he treated it, and it became 'ma'tun' and 'atin' and 'aṭṭana', with emphasis: if that was done to it.
أخذت إهابا معطونا فأدخلته عنقي؛ المعطون: المنتن المتمزق الشعر.
I took a putrid hide and put it around my neck; 'al-ma'tun': the putrid one with torn hair.
وقيل: العطن في الجلد: أن يؤخذ غلقة، وهو نبت، أو فرث، أو ملح فيلقى الجلد فيه حتى ينتن ثم يلقى بعد ذلك في الدباغ.
And it was said: 'Al-'atan' in a hide is to take 'ghalqah', which is a plant, or dung, or salt, and throw the hide into it until it becomes putrid, then it is thrown into the tanning solution afterwards.
والذي ذكره الجوهري في هذا الموضع، قال: أن يؤخذ العلقى فيلقى الجلد فيه حتى ينتن ثم يلقى بعد ذلك في الدباغ.
And what Al-Jawhari mentioned in this place, he said: to take 'al-'alaqa' and throw the hide into it until it becomes putrid, then it is thrown into the tanning solution afterwards.
قال علي بن حمزة: العلقى لا يعطن به الجلد، وإنما يعطن بالغلقة نبت معروف.
Ali bin Hamza said: 'Al-'alaqa' is not used to treat hides, but rather 'al-ghalqah', a known plant, is used for 'atan'.

فأروى الظمئة حتى ضربت بعطن. قال: يقال: ضربت الإبل بعطن إذا رويت ثم بركت حول الماء أو عند الحياض المتعاد إلى الشرب مرة أخرى لتشرب عللا بعد نهل، فإذا استوفت ردت إلى المراعي والأظماء.
So he quenched the thirst until she lay down with her 'atan'. He said: It is said: The camels lay down with their 'atan' if they drank their fill and then lay down around the water or at the troughs, returning to drink again, drinking a second time after a first draught, and when they had drunk their fill, they were returned to the pastures and the dry lands.
